A fully planar solar pumped laser based on a luminescent solar collector
摘要: A solar-pumped laser (SPL) that converts sunlight directly into a coherent and intense laser beam generally requires a large concentrating lens and precise solar tracking, thereby limiting its potential utility. Here, we demonstrate a fully-planar SPL without a lens or solar tracking. A Nd3+-doped silica fiber is coiled into a cylindrical chamber filled with a sensitizer solution, which acts as a luminescent solar collector. The body of the chamber is highly reflective while the top window is a dichroic mirror that transmits incoming sunlight and traps the fluorescence emitted by the sensitizer. The laser-oscillation threshold was reached at a natural sunlight illumination of 60% on the top window. Calculations indicated that a solar-to-laser power-conversion efficiency could eventually reach 8%. Such an SPL has potential applications in long-term renewable-energy storage or decentralised power supplies for electric vehicles and Internet-of-Things devices.

Simultaneous solar laser emissions from three Nd:YAG rods within a single pump cavity
摘要: We report here, to the best of our knowledge, the first simultaneous emission of three continuous-wave solar laser beams by end-side-pumping three 3.0 mm diameter, 25 mm length Nd:YAG single-crystal rods within a single conical pump cavity. An aspheric fused silica lens was used to couple the concentrated solar radiation from the focal zone of a parabolic mirror with 1.0 m2 effective collection area into the laser rods within the pump cavity. 18.3 W multimode solar laser power was measured, resulting in 5.1% laser slope efficiency. 0.036 W laser beam brightness figure of merit was also achieved for each beam, being 9 times more than that of the most efficient solar laser with 32.5 W/m2 collection efficiency. Since the three laser rods were associated with their own 1064 nm output mirrors, it was possible to adjust individually both solar laser output power levels and beam qualities of the three laser beams by adopting different resonant cavity lengths, enabling potential solar laser applications.

Ce:Nd:YAG continuous-wave solar-pumped laser
摘要: The first emission of a Ce:Nd:YAG solar-pumped laser is reported here, to the best of our knowledge. A solar laser head was composed of a fused silica liquid light guide lens and a conical pump cavity, which coupled and redistributed the concentrated solar radiation from the focal zone of a parabolic mirror into a Ce:Nd:YAG laser rod. The laser output performance of the 5 mm diameter, 30 mm length Ce:Nd:YAG laser rod was compared with that from a 5 mm diameter, 30 mm length Nd:YAG rod. With a solar pump power of 569 W, the Ce:Nd:YAG solar laser emitted 6 W continuous-wave power at 1064nm, corresponding to a collection efficiency of 4.9 W/m2. Even though this power level was lower than the 10 W obtained by using the Nd:YAG rod, the Ce:Nd:YAG laser medium may be an alternative active medium for solar-pumped lasers.
