Pre-treatment for preventing degradation of measurement accuracy from speckle noise in speckle interferometry
摘要: Speckle interferometers, which can measure three-dimensional deformations with the same sensitivity in each direction of a three-dimensional axis, have been employed in the industry. However, the measurement results of a complex shape deformation using this method do not always produce a smooth phase map due to the influence of speckle noise. In this paper, this problem that occurs with speckle noise, which is included in the speckle pattern, is discussed. In addition, the solution to the problem concerning speckle noise is discussed. An idea for noise reduction is proposed by using a simple speckle pattern intensity distribution model based on the interferometry. It is confirmed that the proposed method can reduce the influence of speckle noise to 1/1000 of the light source wavelength.

Effect of temperature on digital images of speckle patterns generated by a metallic rough surface
摘要: It is well known that roughness can be inferred from digital images of speckle patterns generated by illuminated rough surfaces, by analyzing parameters such as fractal dimension, lacunarity and correlation, to cite a few. In this article, we investigate the effect of temperature on the speckle pattern generated by the light scattered from a metallic rough surface. We show that fractal dimension is less sensitive to temperature changes than are lacunarity and correlation, and provide information about which method is more suitable for processing the speckle patterns produced by rough surfaces under temperature variation.

Laser beam scattering for the detection of flat, curved, smooth, and rough microplastics in water
摘要: Microplastic (MP) pollution is alarming and poses an imminent threat to the environment with a direct impact on our health and that of fauna in natural water bodies. The understanding of light–MP interactions in water as well as the need for low-cost and robust optical sensors for the detection of MPs that appear everywhere is, therefore, necessary. We have demonstrated the use of a prototype optical sensor in the detection of flat and curved [from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) water bottle] pristine and rough MPs from commercial PET and low-density polyethylene plastics in water. The optical sensor utilizes a photodiode and charge-coupled device (CCD) camera to record simultaneously the specular reflection and the speckle pattern modified by the MPs. In this study, we have exploited the specular reflection in the detection of the pristine samples, whereas the speckle contrast, the normalized standard deviation of the speckle pattern intensity, is utilized in the qualitative estimation of the “effective” surface roughness of the MPs. With the sensor, one can, therefore, detect PET MPs with varying average surface roughness, Ra an indication of MP aging, embedded in water. The prototype can detect the effect of size, type, curvature, transparency, and the translucency of sunken and/or floating MPs in water based on the reflection, scattering, and the (edge) diffraction of light. However, the optical sensor is limited in the discrimination of MP concentration in water. Further modifications to the sensor are needed for its practical implementation in complex natural water bodies and wastewaters.

Ghost imaging at an XUV free-electron laser
摘要: Here we present the results of a classical ghost imaging experiment accomplished at an XUV free-electron laser (FEL). To perform such experiment at an FEL source each x-ray pulse was transmitted through a moving diffuser, which created a noncorrelated speckled beam. This beam was then split in two identical branches by introducing a beam splitter in the form of a transmission grating. In one of these branches the sample was positioned. We demonstrate the possibility of image formation, a double bar in our case, in the beam that has never interacted with the sample. With this experiment we extend the quantum optics methodology to the FEL community.

Uniformity and isotropy of speckle pattern cause the doubled random error phenomenon in digital image correlation
摘要: For subset-based digital image correlation, the random error of second-order shape function roughly doubles that of first-order shape function, termed doubled random error phenomenon. In this work, we suggest that the fundamental cause of this phenomenon is the uniformity and isotropy of speckle pattern. Specially, we prove that the ratio of random error of second-order shape function to that of first-order shape function, from a view of statistic, is expected to be √7∕2 (≈1.87), which is quite close to the empirical value 2. Numerical experiments demonstrate the correctness of propose theoretical analysis.

A Strain Distribution Sensing System for Bone-Implant Interfaces Based on Digital Speckle Pattern Interferometry
摘要: This paper aims to provide an effective measurement method for the distribution of deformations and strains focusing on the response to external loading of bone-implant interfaces. To achieve this target, a novel speckle interference imaging method is proposed by introducing phosphate buffer saline medium, in which the samples were completely placed into a phosphate buffer saline solution medium to stable the water molecules. The stability of interferometry imaging is analyzed by using the concepts of co-occurrence matrix and moment of inertia. A series of experiments to measure load-driven deformation and strain in the bone-implant interface was carried out, and the experiments results were analyzed and discussed. It shows that the proposed method is feasible and effective for the no-contact strain measurements of biomaterials in a physiological condition. The proposed strain distribution sensing system will contribute to evaluating computational simulations and improving selection of implant designs and materials.

Residual Stress Analysis Based on Acoustic and Optical Methods
摘要: Co-application of acoustoelasticity and optical interferometry to residual stress analysis is discussed. The underlying idea is to combine the advantages of both methods. Acoustoelasticity is capable of evaluating a residual stress absolutely but it is a single point measurement. Optical interferometry is able to measure deformation yielding two-dimensional, full-field data, but it is not suitable for absolute evaluation of residual stresses. By theoretically relating the deformation data to residual stresses, and calibrating it with absolute residual stress evaluated at a reference point, it is possible to measure residual stresses quantitatively, nondestructively and two-dimensionally. The feasibility of the idea has been tested with a butt-jointed dissimilar plate specimen. A steel plate 18.5 mm wide, 50 mm long and 3.37 mm thick is braze-jointed to a cemented carbide plate of the same dimension along the 18.5 mm-side. Acoustoelasticity evaluates the elastic modulus at reference points via acoustic velocity measurement. A tensile load is applied to the specimen at a constant pulling rate in a stress range substantially lower than the yield stress. Optical interferometry measures the resulting acceleration field. Based on the theory of harmonic oscillation, the acceleration field is correlated to compressive and tensile residual stresses qualitatively. The acoustic and optical results show reasonable agreement in the compressive and tensile residual stresses, indicating the feasibility of the idea.
