    摘要: We propose a new THz source based on a large aperture photoconductive antenna for the generation of intense THz waves with tunable elliptical polarization. We designed an interdigitated structure with vertical and horizontal electrodes to produce half-cycle THz pulses with horizontal and vertical polarizations, respectively. A time delay between the two polarizations is introduced using a quartz window deposited onto the parts of the antenna with horizontal electrodes forming a phase mask. We demonstrate the generation of sub-cycle THz pulses with tunable elliptical polarization and a 70 kV/cm electric field. We show that the polarization state can be varied from linear to quasi-circular.

  • Continuous Wave THz System Based on an Electrically Tunable Monolithic Dual Wavelength Y-Branch DBR Diode Laser

    摘要: We analyse the use of a tunable dual wavelength Y-branch DBR laser diode for THz applications. The laser generates electrically tunable THz difference frequencies in the range between 100 and 300 GHz. The optical beats are tuned via current injection into a micro-resistor heater integrated on top of one of the distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) section of the diode. The laser is integrated in a homodyne THz system employing fiber coupled ion-implanted LT-GaAs log spiral antennas. The applicability of the developed system in THz spectroscopy is demonstrated by evaluating the spectral resonances of a THz filter as well as in THz metrology in thickness determination of a polyethylene sample.

    摘要: We demonstrate optical rectification in GaP crystals thin-disk oscillator, nonlinearly driven by a 100 W-class compressed to sub-100 fs in a multi-pass cell. In optimized conditions, we obtain a power of 1.35 mW, which is the highest average power achieved in GaP so far. Additionally, we explore the effect of temperature of the crystal down to 77 K, showing that controlling the temperature of the crystal could be a key aspect for further power scaling and for handling thermal effects that become important at such high driving powers.

  • Super-radiative self-compression of photo-injector electron bunches and the use of this effect for realization of a THz source based on spontaneous coherent emission from a short dense electron bunch

    摘要: Laser-driven photo-injectors allow formation of compact and accessible sources of dense electron bunches with a moderate energy of 3–6 MeV, picosecond pulse durations, and charges of up to 1 nC and even greater. These bunches can be used for realization of comparatively simple and compact terahertz sources operating in the regime of spontaneous coherent undulator radiation. This type of radiation is realized, when the effective axial length of bunches is shorter than the radiation wavelength, so that the wave packets emitted by each of the electrons add up basically in phase. The THz source based on the spontaneous emission has a number of advantages as compared to the more traditional free-electron laser (FEL) based on the undulator emission induced due to bunching of a long electron beam by the radiated wave. These are a relatively high efficiency of the emission from the “ready-for-radiation” bunch, a narrow frequency band of the radiated rf signal in a system without a feedback system and an input rf signal, and the phase of the radiated rf signal fixed by the electron bunch phase. These advantages make the THz source based on the spontaneous emission attractive for a number of important applications, including the use of synchronization of such an oscillator with the X-ray FEL in pump-probe experiments.
