  • Direct Imaging of Photo-Switching Molecular Conformations Using Individual Metal Atom Markers

    摘要: Photo-switching behavior of individual organic molecules was imaged by annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM) using a highly electron beam transparent graphene support. Photo-switching azobenzene derivatives with ligands at each ends containing single transition metal atoms (Pt) were designed (Pt-complex), and the distance between the strong ADF-STEM contrast from the two Pt atoms in each Pt-complex is used to track molecular length changes. UV irradiation was used to induce photo-switching of the Pt complex on graphene, and we show that the measured Pt-Pt distances within isolated molecules decreases from ~2.1 nm to ~1.4 nm, indicative of a trans-to-cis isomerization. Light illumination of the Pt-complex on the graphene support also caused their diffusion out from initial clusters to the surrounding area of graphene, indicating that the light-activated mobilization overcomes the inter-molecular van der Waals interactions. This approach shows how individual isolated heavy metal atoms can be included as markers into complex molecules to track their structural changes using ADF-STEM on graphene supports, providing an effective method to study a diverse range of complex organic materials at the single molecule level.

  • Synthesis, Characterization and Photocatalytic Efficiency of ZnO/MWCNT Nanocomposites Prepared Under Different Solvent Conditions

    摘要: Here we report the application of zinc oxide (ZnO) coated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites in the photocatalytic decomposition of acetaldehyde (AA). Zinc oxide nanoparticles were successfully coated on the multi-walled carbon nanotube via impregnation process using zinc acetate (Zn(CH3COO)2 × 2H2O) as precursor and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) treated multi-walled carbon nanotube as raw material under different solvent conditions. The applied solvents during preparation were ethanol (EtOH) and water (H2O). As-prepared materials were characterized by thermal analysis (TG), X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface area measurement (BET) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. Photocatalytic efficiencies of as-prepared composites were investigated in a stationary reactor equipped with UV lamp. Decomposition of acetaldehyde was followed by using gas chromatography (GC). Observations revealed that using impregnation method and different solvents the preparation of ZnO/MWCNT nanocomposites can be controlled easily. The highest degradation rate was achieved with the nanocomposite was synthetized using ethanol as solvent. The photocatalytic experiments revealed that the composite has higher photocatalytic activity than that of both the zinc oxide nanoparticles and the mechanical mixture of multi-walled carbon nanotube and zinc oxide.

  • Formation mechanism of twin structures in p-type (Bi0.25Sb0.75)2Te3 thermoelectric compound

    摘要: The formation mechanism of twin structures in p-type (Bi0.25Sb0.75)2Te3 compound was examined using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and computer simulations. The results shown that the formation of twins is analogous to the twinning mechanism via synchronized activation of Shockley partial dislocations commonly observed terminating {111} growth and annealing twins in face centered cubic (FCC) metals. The f1010g boundary, as an incoherent twin boundary (ITB), is mobile due to its lower shear stress compared to that of the coherent {0001} twin boundary; thickness of the twin region can be reduced or increased according to the direction of the movement.

  • The role of oxygen doping on elemental intermixing at the PVD-CdS/Cu (InGa)Se <sub/>2</sub> heterojunction

    摘要: Elemental intermixing at the CdS/CuIn1?xGaxSe2 (CIGS) heterojunction in thin‐film photovoltaic devices plays a crucial role in carrier separation and thus device efficiency. Using scanning transmission electron microcopy in combination with energy dispersive X‐ray mapping, we find that by controlling the oxygen in the sputtering gas during physical vapor deposition (PVD) of the CdS, we can tailor the degree of elemental intermixing. More oxygen suppresses Cu migration from the CIGS into the CdS, while facilitating Zn doping in the CdS from the ZnO transparent contact. Very high oxygen levels induce nanocrystallinity in the CdS, while moderate or no oxygen content can promote complete CdS epitaxy on the CIGS grains. Regions of cubic Cu2S phase were observed in the Cu‐rich CdCuS when no oxygen is included in the CdS deposition process. In the process‐of‐record sample (moderate O2) that exhibits the highest solar conversion efficiency, we observe a ~26‐nm‐thick Cu‐deficient CIGS surface counter‐doped with the highest Cd concentration among all of the samples. Cd movement into the CIGS was found to be less than 10 nm deep for samples with either high or zero O2. The results are consistent with the expectation that Cd doping of the CIGS surface and lack of Zn diffusion into the buffer both enhance device performance.

  • Surfactant Free Hydrothermal Synthesis of Zn <sub/>2</sub> SnO <sub/>4</sub> Nanoparticles and Their Functional Properties

    摘要: A simple, low temperature, cost effective, surfactant free and scalable synthesis of technologically important Zn2SnO4 (ZTO) nanoparticles with controllable size and shape has been developed. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) of the synthesized ZTO nanoparticles revealed the formation of highly pure crystalline ZTO phase with the spinel-like structure. The Raman spectrum of the sample was dominated by the A1g vibration mode of pure ZTO phase. From UV–Vis absorption measurements, a band gap (Eg) of 3.78 eV was determined. The photocatalytic activity of the ZTO nanoparticles was evaluated for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV-Vis light irradiation. The ZTO-assisted photocatalytic degradation of MB is complete in 25 minutes indicating good photocatalytic activity of ZTO. Mass spectrometric (MS) analysis of degradation intermediates isolated at regular time intervals reveals the presence of azure A, azure B and thionin which are demethylated products of the MB, indicating that the degradation is initiated by demethylation of the molecule.

  • Asymmetry of the Defect Structure of Semipolar GaN Grown on Si(001)

    摘要: The defect structure of a thick (~15 μ m) semipolar gallium nitride (GaN) layer grown by hydride–chloride vapor phase epitaxy on a Si(001) substrate with buffer layers has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The asymmetry of the defect structure of GaN epilayer has been revealed and analyzed. The influence of this asymmetry on the rate of decrease in the density of threading dislocations in the growing epitaxial layer is discussed.
