Multi-channel silicon photonic receiver based on compact second-order microring resonators
摘要: A monolithically integrated multi-channel receiver fabricated on the Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) platform is demonstrated experimentally. This receiver is composed of an eight-channel thermally tunable microring resonator (MRR) filter as the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) demultiplexer and an array of high speed waveguide-integrated Ge-on-Si photodetectors (PDs) for light detection. Second-order MRRs were utilized in each channel to obtain steeper roll-off from passband to stopband and lower crosstalk. The receiver was fabricated by using CMOS-compatible fabrication process at IME A*STAR. With the thermal tunability, the channel spacing can be adjusted according to different channel grid. Lower than ?30 dB crosstalk and higher than 50 GHz 3-dB bandwidth was obtained for the demultiplexer with a channel spacing of 150 GHz. Proof-of-principle demonstration shows that each channel is capable of operating at a data rate of 10 Gb/s, resulting in an aggregate data rate of 80 Gb/s.

High spatial resolution identification of hematoma in inhomogeneous head phantom using broadband fNIR system
摘要: This paper presents a novel method for early detection of hematomas using highly sensitive optical fNIR imaging methods based on broadband photon migration. The NIR experimental measurements of inhomogeneous multi-layer phantoms representing human head are compared to 3D numerical modeling over broadband frequencies of 30–1000 MHz. A finite element method (FEM) simulation of the head phantom are compared to measurements of insertion loss and phase using custom-designed broadband free space optical transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) modules that are developed for photon migration at wavelengths of 670 nm, 795 nm, 850 nm, though results of 670 nm are discussed here. Standard error is used to compute error between 3D FEM modeling and experimental measurements by fitting experimental data to the a√frequency + b . Error results are shown at narrowband and broadband frequency modulation in order to have confidence in 3D numerical modeling. A novel method is established here to identify presence of hematoma based on first and second derivatives of changes in insertion loss and phase (?IL and ?IP), where frequency modulated photons sensitive to different sizes of hematoma is identified for wavelength of 670 nm. The high accuracy of this comparison provides confidence in optical bio-imaging and its eventual application to TBI detection.

摘要: 5G wireless communication systems promise efficient spectrum utilization, advanced modulation and access techniques, and high data rate. To obtain these requirements, millimeter wave (MMW) signals and subsystems are the most suitable to be used. The Modules and devices, proposed for these networks, are intended to use the efficient capabilities of photonic technologies. In this paper, a photonics-based millimeter wave switch, for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals, is proposed by exploiting the nonlinear effects in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). This includes four wave mixing (FWM), self-phase modulation (SPM) and cross-gain modulation (XGM). A 10 Gbps/16QAM-OFDM signal carried over 30 GHz MMW carrier is considered for signal switching. Moreover, we studied the up- and down- wavelength conversion schemes, in terms of probe and pump signal’s power. Furthermore, we investigate the effects of SOA’s injection current and wavelength spacing between the two injected beams that enable optical single sideband (OSSB) generation and switching. Simulation results show possibility of transmitting and switching OFDM signal with 1×10-3 and 13 % rms symbol error rate (SER) and error vector magnitude (EVM), at -22 dBm received power. The simulation is carried out using Virtual Photonic Integrated (VPI) software.

Spin-Selective Transmission in Chiral Folded Metasurfaces
摘要: Controlling the spin angular momentum of light (or circular polarization state) plays a crucial role in the modern photonic applications such as optical communication, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and quantum information processing. However, the conventional approaches to manipulate the spin of light require naturally occurring chiral or birefringent materials of bulky sizes due to the weak light-matter interactions. Here we experimentally demonstrate an approach to implement spin-selective transmission in the infrared region based on chiral folded metasurfaces that are capable of transmitting one spin state of light while largely prohibiting the other. Due to the intrinsic chirality of the folded metasurface, a remarkable circular dichroism as large as 0.7 with the maximum transmittance exceeding 92% is experimentally demonstrated. The giant circular dichroism is interpreted within the framework of charge-current multipole expansion. Moreover, the intrinsic chirality can be readily controlled by manipulating the folding angle of the metasurface with respect to the cardinal plane. Benefiting from its strong chirality and spin-dependent transmission characteristics, the proposed folded metasurface may be applied to a range of novel photon-spin selective devices for optical communication technologies and bio-photonics.

摘要: This paper proposes a novel dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation (DWBA) algorithm that provides high upstream channel bandwidth utilization and low average packet delay for NG-EPON. The proposed algorithm takes ONUs’ scheduling orders, the wavelength assigned to ONU and the grant size of ONU on the assigned wavelength into account. The simulation results show the validity of the proposed DWBA algorithm.

摘要: In recent years, a rapid growth of new technologies requires communication systems to support higher bit rate and longer distance. The Optical network is one of the best optimal solutions which can satisfy the demand for high data rate. The performance of current optical networks depends on the traffic demands. To minimize the traffic mixed line rate (MLR) optical network is implemented. In a transparent MLR optical network, data transmission is done over different wavelength at different line rates within the same fiber. MLR optical networks with data rate 10/40/100 Gb/s over different wavelength channels is a new networking paradigm. This paper considers various modulation techniques in order to achieve better bit error rates (BER). It also shows that modulation technique has a great role in improving the data rates and quality of transmission.

Compensation of the fluctuations of differential delay for frequency transfer in DWDM networks
摘要: This paper investigates the possibility of improving the stability of radio frequency transfer in telecommunication Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) fiber optic networks. As it has been identified, the dispersion compensation in these networks, cause fibers (DCFs), frequently used temperature-induced substantial differential delay, whose fluctuations have the most significant impact on deterioration of the stability of frequency transfer. The authors present a method that allows achieving significant improvement of the long-term stability of frequency transfer. The developed method is based on modeling the impact of DCFs with the help of remotely accessible temperature sensors factory-installed by the manufactures in DCF modules. The effectiveness of the proposed solution has been tested on three different long haul routes (up to 1550 km), set up in the operational PIONER network.

摘要: Significant wave height (Hs), is an important parameter, represented as the integration of directional wave spectra. Although many researchers have directly extracted Hs from SAR images and got a great accuracy of retrieval, those approaches are not suitable for GF-3 SAR data. In this paper, we propose an empirical approach for SAR Hs retrieval, using λc estimated from the real part of image cross spectra obtain from VV-polarized Gaofen-3 (GF-3) wave mode data acquired in different radar beams (called wave-code). Results using GF-3 wave mode data from January to February 2017 indicate that the bias and RMSE errors are: 189 wave-code, -0.13 m and 0.57 m; 190 wave-code, -0.07 m and 0.34 m; 193 wave-code, -0.3 m and 0.59 m; 199 wave-code, 0.16 m and 0.68 m; 215 wave-code, 0.2 m and 0.87 m. they show a relative behavior between the retrieved Hs and the Hs extracted from WAVEWATCH-III (WW3). However, there is a significant error when WW3-extracted Hs exceed 4 m. It seems that the model is not suitable for Hs retrieval on high sea conditions.

Handheld Retinal Oximetry in Healthy Young Adults
摘要: Purpose: The objective of this study was to measure the relative retinal oxygen saturation with a prototype, mobile handheld oximeter in upright and supine position and to compare these measurements to the gold standard Oxymap T1 retinal oximeter in upright position. A handheld oximeter is needed for measurements of infants with retinopathy of prematurity as well as acutely injured and bedridden adults. Methods: Healthy volunteers (age 18–35) were recruited at the Leiden University Medical Center. Retinal images were acquired with the handheld oximeter and the Oxymap T1. Both cameras are dual-wavelength oximeters and acquire images with wavelengths of 570 and 600 nm. Retinal oxygen saturation values were determined for both the handheld camera and the Oxymap T1. Results: Twenty-one subjects (age 25 6 2 years) were included. In upright position, the oxygen saturation for the arterioles was 92.2% to 4.9% vs. 95.5% 6 4.2% and for the venules 57.9% 6 10.2% vs. 57.7% 6 6.4% for the handheld camera and Oxymap T1, respectively. The oxygen saturation was higher in the arterioles than the venules for both cameras (P , 0.05). In supine position, measured with the handheld oximeter, the oxygen saturation in the arterioles was 92.3% 6 5.8% and 59.2% 6 6.1% in the venules. Conclusions: Performance of the prototype, mobile handheld oximeter Corimap camera compares well with the Oxymap T1, with a slightly larger standard deviation in oxygen saturation measurements, both in upright and supine patients. Translation Relevance: To date, to our knowledge, no oximeters are available for handheld use and for measurement in supine position in infants and bedridden adults. Here we tested such an oximeter and show that its performance compares well with that of the gold standard Oxymap T1 in healthy adults.

Microwave photonics‐based all optical wavelength conversion of Nyquist‐DP‐16QAM for flex‐grid optical networks with 112 Gbps
摘要: We propose and demonstrate an all optical wavelength conversion of Nyquist differential phase 16 quadrature amplitude modulation based on microwave photonics signal processing for flex-grid optical networks. By analyzing the mechanism of the microwave photonics and the components, multi-adjusting the parameters of wavelength tunable laser with smooth and adjustable optical intensity can be obtained. Then, the multi-channel photonic signals with the minimal guard space of 5 GHz can be obtained, which provide more than 20 flex-grids for optical transmission with transparent rate and format. The optical power of converted wavelengths, optical signal-to-noise ratio, error vector magnitude, and bit error rate (BER) are studied under the condition of different flex-grids, the frequencies of which are from 15 GHz to 36 GHz. The channel frequency spacing and amplitude of the converted wavelength can be dynamically adjusted via parameter configuration. Flex-grid spacing strategies and channel selecting strategies are given. The BER performance of all converted channels can fall below the forward error correction threshold of 3.8 × 10?3 by optimizing the optical power of the receiver end. The results show the tradeoff between the BER and the detected optical power of the receiver end. These research findings could provide solutions for spectrum allocation and routing selection when wavelength conversion is needed in optical links.
