  • Estimation of Signal-to-Cross Talk Ratio of Stimulated-Raman-Scattering-Induced Cross Talk in Wavelength-Division-Multiplexing-Based Radio-over-Fiber Links

    摘要: This paper evaluates the signal-to-cross talk ratio (SXR) of cross talk induced by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems based on wavelength-division multiplexing. The reported study has modeled the relations of SXR to modulation frequency, optical power, transmission length, and effective area of fiber for various values of the walk-off parameter. The summary of experimental reveals that SXR decreases with increases in channel input power and transmission distance and increased with increases in fiber effective area and modulation frequency. Results showed that increasing the walk-off parameter from 13.6 to 81.6 ps/km increased the SXR by almost 6 dBm. Furthermore, various fibers, including standard single-mode fiber (SMF), Corning LEAF, and Alcatel TeraLight were tested for their capacity to mitigate SRS-induced cross talk. These tests demonstrated that standard SMF suppressed SRS cross talk effectively and offered values of SXR 3 dBm and 6 dBm higher than the values exhibited by Alcatel TeraLight and Corning LEAF, respectively.

  • Calculating the Effective Center Wavelength for Heterodyne Interferometry of an Optical Frequency Comb

    摘要: Heterodyne interferometry based on an optical frequency comb (OFC) is a powerful tool for distance measurement. In this paper, a method to calculate the effective center wavelength of wide spectrum heterodyne interference signal was explored though both simulation and experiment. Results showed that the effective center wavelength is a function of the spectra of the two interfered beams and time-delay of the two overlapped pulses. If the product of the spectra from two arms is symmetric, the effective center wavelength does not change with time-delay of the two pulses. The relative difference between the simulation and experiment was less than 0.06%.

  • A Versatile Silicon-Silicon Nitride Photonics Platform for Enhanced Functionalities and Applications

    摘要: Silicon photonics is one of the most prominent technology platforms for integrated photonics and can support a wide variety of applications. As we move towards a mature industrial core technology, we present the integration of silicon nitride (SiN) material to extend the capabilities of our silicon photonics platform. Depending on the application being targeted, we have developed several integration strategies for the incorporation of SiN. We present these processes, as well as key components for dedicated applications. In particular, we present the use of SiN for athermal multiplexing in optical transceivers for datacom applications, the nonlinear generation of frequency combs in SiN micro-resonators for ultra-high data rate transmission, spectroscopy or metrology applications and the use of SiN to realize optical phased arrays in the 800–1000 nm wavelength range for Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) applications. These functionalities are demonstrated using a 200 mm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible pilot line, showing the versatility and scalability of the Si-SiN platform.

  • Wavelength conversion characteristics of Y1–– Er Yb BaZn3AlO7

    摘要: For future energy conversion applications, Y1–x–yErxYbyBaZn3AlO7 were synthesized using a flux method and their wavelength conversion characteristics were investigated. The emission intensities of down-shifting under 365 nm excitation, which was observed in the range of 400–800 nm, were significantly changed by doping with rare-earth ions. Up-conversion emission peaks under 980 nm excitation were observed at 535, 550, and 661 nm; two or three photon processes are involved. The maximum emission intensity of bidirectional wavelength conversion under 365 nm and 980 nm irradiation was observed for x = 0.10 and y = 0.20. For simultaneous excitation under irradiation at 365 and 980 nm, an additive effect with very little alteration of energy transfer mechanisms was observed compared with that of each single excitation.

  • Prediction of excitation wavelength of phosphors by using machine learning model

    摘要: Luminescent materials are the integral part of green revolution helping us in saving the energy. Much effort been made to design and discover the novel phosphors for solid-state lighting. The current paper focuses on the development of machine learning (ML) model based on simple luminescent materials to predict the excitation to the closest possible accuracy using easily accessible key attributes using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and artificial neural network (ANN) ML approach. These selected attributes expected to correlate with the excitation of material. The style for studying the material property has the potential to turn down the cost and time involved in an Edisonian approach to the lengthy lab experiment to identify excitation.

  • Flexible Filtering Element on SOI with Wide Bandwidth tunability and Full FSR tuning

    摘要: We demonstrate a Silicon-on-Insulator flexible filtering element, relying on two serially coupled micro ring resonators equipped with three thermo-optically tuned Mach-Zehnder interferometers, acting as variable optical couplers. A single electrode configuration is adopted, enabling the low-complexity thermo-optical control of the filtering element for bandwidth and wavelength tuneability. The module's performance has been studied in detail via simulation analysis and the obtained results were verified through experimental evaluation. Wide bandwidth tunability from 9 GHz to 103 GHz is achieved with a power efficiency of 0.284 mW/GHz, while full Free Spectral Range wavelength tuning is achieved with an efficiency of 0.297 mW/GHz. Module's insertion loss lays below 3 dB.

  • High-performance long-wavelength InAs/GaSb superlattice detectors grown by MOCVD

    摘要: We demonstrate high-performance long-wavelength InAs/GaSb superlattice (SL) infrared photodetectors based on an Al-free single heterojunction grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The device structure consists of a mid-wavelength InAs/GaSb SL p-n junction (PN) and a long-wavelength InAs/GaSb SL n-type absorber (n), so-called PNn design, to reduce the dark current. In addition, a shallow etch technique was employed by exposing only mid-wavelength materials during pixel isolation to suppress surface leakage currents. At 77 K and a bias voltage of -0.1 V, the device exhibited a 50% cut-off wavelength at 8.0 μm, a dark current density of 2.4×10-5 A/cm2, and a peak responsivity of 2.1 A/W. Temperature dependent dark current measurement indicated diffusion-limited behavior down to 75 K. The specific detectivity was estimated to be 7.3×1011 cm·Hz1/2/W, which is comparable with that of detectors grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) at similar cut-off wavelengths.

    摘要: It is proposed an automatically steering optical beam-forming network (OBFN), which is consisted of an optical fiber loop structure. The loop structure is composed by an optical switch, an optical fiber splitter, and an optical true time delay lines based on dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM). The channel number of the DWDM is matched with the number of the phased array antennas (PAA). The true time delay difference between two adjacent channels is set as a basic step. And the optical wave modulated by radio frequency (RF) signal can run into the loop and suffer increased delay with increased circles. Thus the PAA is steered automatically without additional controlling and programming. The performance of this design is analyzed with its maximal circle numbers and the splitting ratio of the optical splitter in theory. The concept-proof experiments with 8 optical channels for DWDM are carried out and the simulation of the PAA radiation pattern is given.

  • Modeling the Effect of Wavelength Selective Switch Latency on Optical Flow Switching Performance

    摘要: Optical networks are well suited to enable massive data exchanges between datacenters. Elephant data flows can be routed over custom provisioned and dedicated lightpaths (optical flows) while other (mice) flows, which are routed by electronic switches, are unaffected. In some solutions, wavelength-selective switch (WSS) devices are employed in the optical nodes to physically and individually route each lightpath toward its destination. WSS devices take time to be switched and consequently delay the lightpath setup completion time. In this paper, the authors present three approximate Markov chain models to account for three different WSS service policies. These models estimate the expected lightpath setup and teardown time across an optical node that makes use of WSS devices. The first and more conventional policy (model) assumes that each setup and teardown request is handled individually, while the other two policies (models) assume that groups of setup and/or teardown requests are handled together by the WSS. The models’ estimates are compared against the results obtained from a computer-based simulator, where both analytical models and simulator account for experimentally measured WSS response times. The simulator is also used to investigate the end-to-end lightpath setup time across an arbitrary mesh network. Results obtained from the models and simulator show that the group-based service policies outperform the conventional policy at high loads. The group-based policies are especially useful in the presence of lightpaths that are frequently set up and have relatively short holding time (i.e., short duration of elephant-optical flows).

  • Efficient cascaded wavelength conversion based on Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage

    摘要: We demonstrate a highly efficient process of cascaded wavelength conversion among three states that is based on the Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage technique, and enables the achievement of nearly complete wavelength conversion in the mid-infrared laser generation process. By analyzing the relevant parameters in the model, we identify various factors that affect the efficiency of the conversion process. Compared with traditional cascaded wavelength conversion based on the technique of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage, the new conversion process not only maintains a high efficiency but also keeps the intermediate frequency strength low along the interacting length and achieves better stability when the relevant parameters change.
