    摘要: Free space optical communication (FSO) provides high data rate by allowing light passed through the atmosphere. It is very effective and efficient technology for wireless communication. This emerging field basically uses invisible beams of light such as ultraviolet, infrared, etc. This work exclusively deals with the designing of hybrid WDM based FSO system using the simulation software Opti-System 7.0 with Minimum-Shift Keying and Differential-phase-shift keying. Further their study has been made as to which modulation techniques provides better means of communication. The normal rain weakening from rain power information which are gathered for a period for six months. The concert of the future system is evaluated in terms of Bit Error Rate, Q-factor, and Receiver Sensitivity are examined with respect to link distance for using rain attenuation 20.5dBm. The transmission wavelength and data rate is 1550nm and 2.5Gbps considered for investigation.

  • Influence of Conventional Optical Amplifiers for 64×10 Gbps WDM System

    摘要: In this work we have investigated semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and RAMAN Amplifier separately under 64 channels WDM system at 10 Gbps data rate. A comparison is made based upon the values of Q- factor, bit error rate (BER), and power received for different values of laser (present at the transmitter) power. The eye diagram for the three optical amplifiers has also been analyzed. Also factor, BER, and power the performance factors (Q- received) are evaluated for different values of fiber length. In general it is observed that with respect to the power received for a particular laser power (at the transmitter) and up to a fiber length of about 120 km Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) gives the best result among all the three amplifiers. With respect to the quality (Q) – factor the RAMAN Amplifier gives slightly better result for a given laser power and for a short fiber length (up to a fiber length of 50 km). For long distance (fiber length greater than 160 km) the Q – factor for all the three optical amplifier saturates and become equal. In terms of Bit Error Rate, RAMAN amplifier is best as it gives minimum BER at a given laser power but up to the fiber length of 70 km EDFA provides minimum BER.

  • Analysis of the Cost and Energy Efficiency of Future Hybrid and Heterogeneous Optical Networks

    摘要: Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) promises to provide the necessary boost in the core networks’ capacity along with the required flexibility in order to cope with the Internet’s growing heterogeneous traffic. At the same time, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology remains a cost-effective and reliable solution especially for long-haul transmission. Due to the higher implementation cost of optical OFDM transmission technology, it is expected that OFDM-based bandwidth variable transponders (BVT) will co-exist with conventional WDM ones. In this paper, we provide an integer linear programming (ILP) formulation that minimizes the cost and power consumption of such hybrid architecture and then a comparison is made with a pure OFDM-based elastic optical network (EON) and a mixed line rate (MLR) WDM optical network in order to evaluate their cost and energy efficiency.

    摘要: The next generation passive optical network, stage 2 (NG-PON2) constitute milestone in the optical access networks evolution. Currently the requirements of its physical layer, such as a 40 Gb/s of upstream/downstream capacity, using a hybrid WDM-TDM technology with reliability and efficiency in bandwidth and power consumption. The NG'PON2 standard also demand an Optical Distribution Network (ODN) backward compatibility with previous ITU-T PON standards. In this paper we provide a comprehensive way to understand NG-PON2 and present an experimental demonstration of a NGPON-2 compliant network deployment, employing BER and Optical Path Penalty (OPP) measurements, in order to verify the performance of different inter-channel spacing variations for determining its impact in the data transmission. Results show that there is a 3 dB penalty when using 0.2 nm of inter-channel spacing with respect to a 0.4 nm of inter-channel spacing.

  • Estimation of Signal-to-Cross Talk Ratio of Stimulated-Raman-Scattering-Induced Cross Talk in Wavelength-Division-Multiplexing-Based Radio-over-Fiber Links

    摘要: This paper evaluates the signal-to-cross talk ratio (SXR) of cross talk induced by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems based on wavelength-division multiplexing. The reported study has modeled the relations of SXR to modulation frequency, optical power, transmission length, and effective area of fiber for various values of the walk-off parameter. The summary of experimental reveals that SXR decreases with increases in channel input power and transmission distance and increased with increases in fiber effective area and modulation frequency. Results showed that increasing the walk-off parameter from 13.6 to 81.6 ps/km increased the SXR by almost 6 dBm. Furthermore, various fibers, including standard single-mode fiber (SMF), Corning LEAF, and Alcatel TeraLight were tested for their capacity to mitigate SRS-induced cross talk. These tests demonstrated that standard SMF suppressed SRS cross talk effectively and offered values of SXR 3 dBm and 6 dBm higher than the values exhibited by Alcatel TeraLight and Corning LEAF, respectively.

  • Evaluation of Signal Regeneration Impact on the Power Efficiency of Long-Haul DWDM Systems

    摘要: Due to potential economic benefits and expected environmental impact, the power consumption issue in wired networks has become a major challenge. Furthermore, continuously increasing global Internet traffic demands high spectral efficiency values. As a result, the relationship between spectral efficiency and energy consumption of telecommunication networks has become a popular topic of academic research over the past years, where a critical parameter is power efficiency. The present research contains calculation results that can be used by optical network designers and operators as guidance for developing more power efficient communication networks if the planned system falls within the scope of this paper. The research results are presented as average aggregated traffic curves that provide more flexible data for the systems with different spectrum availability. Further investigations could be needed in order to evaluate the parameters under consideration taking into account particular spectral parameters, e.g., the entire C-band.

    摘要: In recent years, a rapid growth of new technologies requires communication systems to support higher bit rate and longer distance. The Optical network is one of the best optimal solutions which can satisfy the demand for high data rate. The performance of current optical networks depends on the traffic demands. To minimize the traffic mixed line rate (MLR) optical network is implemented. In a transparent MLR optical network, data transmission is done over different wavelength at different line rates within the same fiber. MLR optical networks with data rate 10/40/100 Gb/s over different wavelength channels is a new networking paradigm. This paper considers various modulation techniques in order to achieve better bit error rates (BER). It also shows that modulation technique has a great role in improving the data rates and quality of transmission.

  • Label Stacking Scenarios in Hybrid Wavelength and Code-Switched GMPLS Networks

    摘要: Multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) is a promising solution to implement high-speed internet protocol (IP) networks by reducing the layer number. To meet the increasing demand for data traffic, optical packet switching (OPS) is integrated under IP to provide high bandwidth to end users. Generalized MPLS (GMPLS) is perfectly compatible with the routing algorithm in IP/MPLS as it supports packet-switching functions. In this paper, we investigate the label stacking scenarios in GMPLS networks. In GMPLS, label stacking is done to reduce the node complexity by appending multiple labels to a single packet. Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and optical code-division multiplexing (OCDM) signals have been widely used as identifying labels. As the labels can be permutated among the wavelengths or code dimensions, the structure of a label stack can be varied. However, studies on the relationship between label stacking scenarios and network performance are limited. To investigate this issue, we propose three label stacking models: sequential code distribution; sequential wavelength distribution, and random label distribution. The simulation results show that the sequential wavelength assignment, wherein the labels are uniformly distributed among the wavelengths, exhibits the best system performance in terms of the label-error rate (LER).

    摘要: With the volumes of transmitted information growth, the task of increasing the noise immunity and reliability of data transmission networks arises. The presence of interference such as nonlinear loss, chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion, and inter-channel interference decreases the performance of fiber optical communication systems. Forward Error Correction (FEC) codes are vital in optical communication systems to achieve highly efficient and highly reliable communication. The paper presents research on a simulation model where FEC channel-coding schemes based on the Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) cycling block code are integrated with non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK) modulated wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) fiber optical communication systems. The results highlight the selection of coding parameters in the adopted FEC approach. In our paper, the BCH (255, 231), BCH (255, 223), and BCH (255,191) FEC channel-coding schemes are chosen for integration in the NRZ-OOK modulated WDM optical transmission system. The paper shows the main advantages and drawbacks of the selected FEC coding scheme and provides a comparison of the proposed schemes based on their main features, such as bit error ratio (BER), which were obtained through the simulations of 25 Gbit/s NRZ-OOK WDM fiber optical system. The dynamics of changes in BER was investigated using the Monte Carlo (MC) method for precise results. The paper shows that integration of FEC channel-coding schemes based on the BCH codes improves the noise immunity and reliability of the WDM Fiber Optical Communication Systems.
