  • A right-handed circularly polarized wave generated by a waveguide-fed holographic metasurface

    摘要: We propose a novel method superposed two linearly polarized components to generate a right-handed circularly polarized (RCP) wave by using a holographic waveguide-fed metasurface. Combining with the holography principle and the polarizable particles based method, the expected RCP wave can be steered flexibly only by changing the slot state of each unit cell. A prototype generating a RCP wave at boresight direction is simulated, fabricated and measured, respectively. Both simulation and experiment results verify the good capability of the proposed metasurface. Applying this method, the resultant metasurface does not need a complex feeding network and can be easily extended to a reconfigurable CP metasurface. Therefore, the proposal has a huge potential in reconfigurable multifunctional CP devices.

  • THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF FERRITE-LOADED WAVEGUIDE FOR FERRIMAGNETISM CHARACTERIZATION

    摘要: This work proposes an approach to retrieve the ferrite’s electromagnetic properties in a single compact con?guration, simpler than the traditional measurement systems. The ferrite under test is fully inserted into a rectangular waveguide with a magnetic bias. The complex scattering parameters are theoretically analyzed under the consideration of modal e?ect at isotropy-anisotropy interfaces. Extraordinarily sharp Fano resonances are observed in the scattering spectrums, originating from the multimode interference inside the magnetized ferrite. There is good agreement among theoretical, experimental, and full-wave simulation results. This model can be further utilized to simultaneously retrieve all ferrite properties, including permittivity (ε), saturation magnetization (4πMs), and magnetic linewidth (ΔH) from the measured scattering parameters, facilitating the designs and applications of ferrite devices.

  • Waveguide Components and Aperture Antennas with Frequency-and Time-Domain Selectivity Properties

    摘要: Filtering modules are essential devices of modern microwave systems given their capability to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the received signal or to eliminate the unwanted interferences. For discriminating between different components, a filter exhibits a frequency-selective response that, however, is not able to distinguish between different signals whose spectrum falls within the pass-band of the filter itself. In this regard, some electromagnetic structures exhibiting, at the same frequency, different responses depending on the waveform of the incoming waves have been recently proposed. In this paper, we extend the aforementioned approach to the case of a standard waveguide filtering module. In particular, by loading a band-pass filtering iris with a proper lumped-element circuit, we design a waveguide component able to distinguish between different pulsed waves, even at the same frequency, depending on their pulse width. Moreover, by using this filter for capping an open-ended rectangular waveguide, a radiating element with both frequency- and time-domain selectivity properties is presented. The structures discussed in this paper may pave the way to a new class of microwave systems that, being both frequency and time selective, are less sensitive to noise and interferences.

    摘要: Structures with patches placed on the interfaces in a two-layered dielectric waveguide are promising to be used in different applications at THz waves. To realize the method of moments (MoM) solution in the spectral domain spectral Green’s functions (GFs) for sheet electric currents on the interfaces of the two-layer dielectric cylindrical waveguide are needed. This paper presents the way to enhance the MoM solution efficiency by extracting an asymptotic behavior of the spectral GF which depends on two variables: the propagation constant and the azimuth index. Here asymptotic spectral GFs are constructed and calculated when electrical sheet current is placed on different interfaces.

  • Plasmonic refractive index sensor with multi-channel Fano resonances based on MIM waveguides

    摘要: A multi-channel Fano resonant structure is proposed and analyzed based on subwavelength metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguides. First, two MIM output ports associated with specific side-coupled cavities are designed to locate at the center and quarter positions of an end-coupled cavity, respectively. Since the interference between the dark and bright modes, dual-channel Fano resonances with asymmetrical lines shapes are obtained at both ports, respectively. High sensitivity and figure of merits are investigated. Besides, phase shifts are also investigated leading to positive and negative group delays available at the Fano peaks and dips, respectively. Likewise, two extra output ports with identical resonant cavities are placed on the other side of the end-coupled cavity. In this case, four-channel Fano resonances with considerable performances are obtained. The proposed structure is analyzed by the coupled mode theory and the finite difference time domain method. It is believed this device can be used as a chip-scale refractive index sensor and optical filter.

    摘要: The millimeter wave 5G communication promises wide bandwidth for high data rate throughput, however the available area on cellular user equipment (UE) is quite limited, and 2 dimensional phased array occupies a large area and is fairly complicated. In this article we explore the possibility a waveguide-fed millimeter wave metasurface antenna for 28 GHz band. The element is a generic T-metasurface, and LCD control of array factor is suggested with a glass lens to focus the beam. A fan shape beam is generated from this antenna with maximum gain around 16.7 dB. This design may serve the 5G mmW communication with simpler structure to nearby small cell station.

  • Brazing, Laser, and Electron-Beam Welding of Additively Manufactured GRCop-84 Copper for Phased Array Lower Hybrid Launchers

    摘要: Recent advances in selective laser melting 3-D printing technology allow additive manufacturing of lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) RF launchers from a new material, Glenn Research Copper 84 (GRCop-84), a Cr2Nb (8 at. % Cr, 4 at. % Nb) precipitation hardened alloy, in configurations unachievable by conventional machining. Cr2Nb crystals pin grain boundaries within the copper matrix resulting in high tensile strength and resistance to annealing at elevated temperatures. Brazing, laser, and electron-beam welding (EBW) techniques are explored for joining a thin-walled GRCop-84 waveguide with zero porosity and minimal internal surface roughness. GRCop-84 wets well with the silver solder, CuSil, and Cusil-ABA brazes, once the durable surface oxide is mechanically removed. GRCop-84 melt pool size and flow during EBW is reduced compared to oxygen-free copper (OFC). Pulsed laser and e-beam welding maintains the Cr2Nb precipitate size; precipitate coarsening occurs in conduction mode e-beam welding.

  • Modal characteristics of refractive index engineered hybrid plasmonic waveguide

    摘要: In this work, we proposed a novel design of a refractive index engineered subwavelength grating silicon-based hybrid plasmonic waveguide via the finite element method. The intensity integral (Γ) in the upper cladding can be controlled by varying the thickness (HSi) of the top silicon layer. The highest evanescent field ratio of 0.85 is obtained at HSi=200 nm which allows the hybrid mode to confine in the low index medium and a large evanescent field resides in the upper cladding. The sensitivity of the waveguide is calculated by monitoring the change in the effective refractive index to the ambient refractive index. The maximum mode sensitivity of 0.7 is obtained. The spectral performance of the subwavelength grating (SWG) hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPWG) based ring resonator design is studied which exhibits a sensitivity as high as 1000 nm/RIU which is higher than the previously reported values. We believe that the proposed waveguide scheme is an ideal candidate to produce highly sensitive lab-on-chip sensors.

  • A Terahertz Traveling-Wave Tube Based on Defect Photonic Crystal Waveguide

    摘要: A defect photonic crystal waveguide (DPCW) is presented as a slow-wave structure (SWS) for terahertz (THz) traveling-wave tube (TWT). Due to the characteristics of DPCW, the mode competition and backward wave are greatly depressed, improving the stability of TWT. The DPCW SWS has ?at dispersion characterization and high interaction impedance at 220 GHz. Simulation results show that saturated output power of 12.1 W, corresponding to a gain of 24.3 dB, and the 3-dB gain ripple within 20 GHz can be achieved at the center frequency of 220 GHz. The DPCW-TWT has a low working voltage at 9.52 kV compared to that of folded waveguide (FWG) SWS in this frequency band. The proposed DPCW for the THz regime is easy to fabricate and assemble using the modern fabrication processing technology.

    摘要: Optical interconnect has attracted much attention as a possible solution to solve the bottleneck of conventional electric interconnect for realizing high bit rate transmission network. The optical interconnect requires high efficiency and easy optical coupling between optical wiring and optical fibers. Especially in these days, expansion of single mode fiber in optical interconnect and silicon photonics (SiPh) devices requires new coupling scheme between these devices. In this paper, we propose a novel coupling device which is composed with a microlens and a pillar having about 10?m diameter on the end face of SMF. This is fabricated by using self-written waveguide (SWW) method with UV-curable resin.
