A Refractive Index Sensor Based on a Fabry–Perot Interferometer Manufactured by NIR Laser Microdrilling and Electric Arc Fusion
摘要: In-line Fabry–Perot cavities manufactured by a new technique using electric arc fusion of NIR laser microdrilled optical fiber flat tips were studied herein for refractive index sensing. Sensors were produced by creating an initial hole on the tip of a standard single-mode telecommunication optical fiber using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Laser ablation and plasma formation processes created 5 to 10 micron cavities. Then, a standard splicing machine was used to fuse the microdrilled fiber with another one, thus creating cavities with lengths around 100 micrometers. This length has been proven to be necessary to obtain an interferometric signal with good fringe visibility when illuminating it in the C-band. Then, the sensing tip of the fiber, with the resulting air cavity, was submitted to several cleaves to enhance the signal and, therefore, its response as a sensor, with final lengths between tens of centimeters for the longest and hundreds of microns for the shortest. The experimental results were analyzed via two signal analysis techniques, fringe visibility and fast Fourier transform, for comparison purposes. In absolute values, the obtained sensitivities varied between 0.31 nm?1/RIU and about 8 nm?1/RIU using the latter method and between about 34 dB/RIU and 54 dB/RIU when analyzing the fringe visibility.

Hair removal treatment using 1,064 nm long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser in auricular post reconstruction of microtia patient: two case reports
摘要: Microtia is a congenital anomaly of the external and middle ear with various degrees of severity. The hair growth on the reconstructed auricle causes aesthetic problems. We describe two cases about the successful epilation of unwanted hair in postauricular reconstruction of microtia patients using 1,064 nm long-pulsed neodymium: ytrium-alumunium-garnet (LP Nd:YAG) laser in Fitzpatrick skin type IV patients, using 6x6 mm tip, 35 J/cm2 fluence, 10 ms pulse, and 1 Hz frequency with burnt of hair as an endpoint. On the follow up day 11 of case one and day 7 of case two, the hair reductions on treated auricles were 46% and 58%, respectively, with no adverse effects. Minimal 6 repeated sessions are recommended for optimal result. In these case reports, LP Nd:YAG laser treatment is considered effective for the unwanted hair growth on the reconstructed auricle in dark skin type patients with minimal risk of adverse effect.

Surface roughness alterations of zirconia implants after Er:YAG laser irradiation: a preliminary study
摘要: Objective This study aimed to investigate the surface roughness parameters (Rp in μm) of zirconia implants (TAVDental) after erbium YAG (LiteTouchTM) laser irradiation. Material and methods Implants were randomized into two groups according to the laser irradiation parameters (1.5 W/10 Hz and 1.5 W/30 Hz). The surface topography of each implant was analyzed before and after laser irradiation using laser-scanning microscopy. The roughness values from three different areas (cervical, middle, and apical) of each implant were registered. Result Irrespective of the different laser settings and implant surface areas, both groups showed a significant reduced mean and peak surface roughness values after laser irradiation. However, no signs of thermal defects were observed. Conclusion Based on the conditions of this preliminary study, it can be concluded that the use of the Er, YAG (1.5 W, 10 and 30 Hz) is a safe tool for zirconia implant surface decontamination.

Comparison of Nd:YAG laser (532 nm green) vs diode laser (810 nm) photocoagulation in the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity: an evaluation in terms of complications
摘要: Purpose To compare the anterior and posterior segment complications of diode (810 nm) laser photocoagulation (LPC) and Nd:YAG (532 nm green) LPC in the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Patients and methods The 84 eyes of 43 patients treated with diode LPC (group 1) and 58 eyes of 31 patients treated with Nd:YAG LPC (group 2) for ROP in our clinic were enrolled in the study. Medical records of all patients were investigated retrospectively. The patients in each group were examined in terms of birth weights, gestational weeks, stage of retinopathy, number of lasers pots, laser parameters, and anterior and posterior complications of LPC. Results The mean birth weeks of group 1 patients were postmenstrual 27.7 ± 2.5 (23–33), while the mean birth weights were 1006.0 ± 334.5 (540–1980) grams. The mean birth weeks of group 2 patients were postmenstrual 27.4 ± 2.6 (23–33), while the mean birth weights were 1073.8 ± 329.2 (480–1720) grams. The mean numbers of laser spots were 1036.0 ± 515.2 (430–2410) in group 1 per eye, while the mean numbers of laser spots were 1085.4 ± 526.0 (445–2530) in group 2 per eye (p ≥ 0.05). Additional laser application was performed in four eyes (4.8%) in group 1 and four eyes (6.9%) in group 2. Four eyes (4.8%) treated with diode LPC and one eye (1.7%) treated with Nd:YAG laser developed retinal detachment. Two eyes of a patient (3.4%) applied Nd:YAG LPC developed cataract. Conclusion Cataract may develop when Nd:YAG laser is used; however, posterior segment complications may be more likely to appear with the use of diode laser in these cases.

We report on the development of a 50W CW radially polarised Ho:YAG laser operating at 2090nm.

Using Er:YAG laser to remove lithium disilicate crowns from zirconia implant abutments: An in vitro study
摘要: When implants are restored with cement-retained restorations, prosthetic retrievability can be difficult and often requires sectioning using rotary instruments. Sometimes repeated removals of a cement-retained implant crown are needed such as for treatment of peri-implantitis or immediate implant provisionalization. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser as a non-invasive treatment modality to remove lithium disilicate crowns from zirconia implant abutments following long-term cementation, repetitive debonding and re-cementation, and short-term retrieval.

Percutaneous Interstitial Nd:YAG Laser Therapy for Axillary Osmidrosis
摘要: Background and Objectives: To investigate the effects of percutaneous interstitial Nd:YAG laser irradiation on the apocrine glands and molecules involved in odor production (apolipoprotein [ApoD], androgen receptor [AR]) in the subcutaneous tissue of a pig. Study Design/Materials and Methods: Skin on the back of healthy adult miniature pigs was exposed to pulsed Nd:YAG laser irradiation at 5 or 10 W, or continuous Nd:YAG laser irradiation at 10 W. Samples were taken 1 hour, 1 week, and 1 month after treatment for histology, western blot, and real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT‐PCR) analysis. Results: One week and 1 month after irradiation, the apocrine glands in pigskin became rounded, glandular cells were shorter, and the glandular cavities were larger compared with controls, but there were no obvious changes in fat cell distribution of collagen around the apocrine glands. One month after irradiation at 10 W in continuous mode, there was a significant decrease in ApoD expression in apocrine cells and ApoD and AR protein and expression levels in pigskin compared with controls. There were also significant differences in ApoD and AR protein and expression levels between treatments. Conclusions: Percutaneous interstitial Nd:YAG laser irradiation has potential as a safe and efficacious treatment for axillary osmidrosis as it may decrease the production of volatile unsaturated fatty acids, steroids, and associated unpleasant odors in the axilla.

Synthesis of gold nanoparticles by pulsed laser-assisted reduction of aqueous gold precursor
摘要: In this paper, colloidal gold nanoparticles (GNPs) were synthesized by Nd:YAG (λ = 1064 nm) pulsed laser-assisted reduction (PLAR) of aqueous [AuCl4]?. In this process, during laser ablation of a Mo target in DI water, a [AuCl4]? precursor solution was being added dropwise in situ. UV–Vis absorption spectra showed distinct plasmonic absorption bands at 209 and 530 nm corresponding to Mo nanoparticles (NPs) and GNPs, respectively. Furthermore, no significant conversion for [AuCl4]? was found when it was added to aged Mo NPs or when it was irradiated in the lack of the Mo target. Using transmission electron microscope (TEM) images, it was found that precursor concentration and laser-ablation time can affect the population or size of GNPs. In PLAR with a small amount of KI solution in water, the GNPs size increases to ~ 50 nm via an iodine-induced particle fusion mechanism. The reduction mechanism was discussed based on metastable species intercation, producing the cavitation bubble during laser ablation.

Passively Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1074.1 nm
摘要: We report a passively Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1074.1 nm based on an elaborate plane-plane cavity. By optimizing coatings of the cavity, the fierce parasitic transitions at 1064, 1112 and 1123 nm are suppressed, and the line at 1074 nm is individually amplified. The CW power of 1480 mW at 1074.1 nm is achieved at a pump power of 10.0 W. The single-wavelength line at 1074.1 nm in the passively Q-switched regime is obtained and produces stable pulses as short as 23.7 ns with peak power of 1584 W.
