  • New Wafer-Level High-Frequency Characterization of Coupled Transmission Lines

    摘要: In this article, a new experimental characterization technique for coupled transmission lines is presented. Three specific experimental test patterns (E-, F-, and G-type structures) that can individually characterize the electromagnetic coupling of two coupled lines are developed and fabricated on the same wafer using a 0.18-μm CMOS process. Since the devised test patterns are two-port networks, well-established two-port network characterization techniques can be exploited. Transmission line model parameters (i.e., propagation constants and characteristic impedances) associated with the three two-port test patterns can be directly determined from the measured S-parameters, followed by circuit model parameters (R, L, C, and G) for two coupled lines. Without rigorous equipment calibration and deembedding parasitic effects, experimental characterizations for two coupled lines using four-port network S-parameter measurements may yield physically ambiguous data above 10 GHz due to the parasitic resonances, whereas the proposed technique can determine stable and accurate network parameters over a broad frequency band. To further support the validity of the proposed technique, they are compared with data using 3-D numerical calculations and low-frequency capacitance measurements.

  • Design of Substrate Integrated Gap Waveguide and Their Transitions to Microstrip Line, for Millimeter-Wave Applications

    摘要: This paper offers an approximate, but very convenient and accurate, manner to find the desired strip width for substrate integrated gap waveguide (SIGW) with a given characteristic impedance and the conductor and dielectric attenuation constants, without any complicated manual calculations or time-consuming full-wave simulation and optimization iterations. Moreover, the investigation of the transition between SIGW and microstrip lines will prove that an additional transition structure, such as a conventional microstrip taper, is not required any more at millimeter-wave frequencies for the desired transmission performance. This is a useful feature in circuit design and compactness. Both of the above works will be of great help to realize future feeding networks for SIGW antenna arrays or other types of cost-effective SIGW passive components at high frequencies. Two SIGW prototypes, working at Ka and V bands, are fabricated and offer experimental verifications, which present good agreement with the simulation results.

  • Theoretical Analysis of Moving Reference Planes Associated with Unit Cells of Nonreciprocal Lossy Periodic Transmission-Line Structures

    摘要: This paper presents a theoretical analysis of moving reference planes associated with unit cells of non-reciprocal lossy periodic transmission-line structures (NRLSPTLSs) by the equivalent bi-characteristic-impedance transmission line (BCITL) model. Applying the BCITL theory, only the equivalent BCITL parameters (characteristic impedances for waves propagating in forward and reverse directions and associated complex propagation constants) are of interest. An infinite NRLSPTLS is considered first by shifting a reference position of unit cells along TLs of interest. Then, a semi-infinite terminated NRLSPTLS is investigated in terms of associated load reflection coefficients. It is found that the equivalent BCITL characteristic impedances of the original and shifted unit cells are mathematically related by the bilinear transformation. In addition, the associated load reflection coefficients of both unit cells are mathematically related by the bilinear transformation. However, the equivalent BCITL complex propagation constants remain unchanged. Numerical results are provided to show the validity of the proposed theoretical analysis.

  • Detection of abnormality occurring over the whole cable length by frequency domain reflectometry

    摘要: In previous papers, the authors reported that a combination of frequency domain reflectometry and inverse fast Fourier transform can locate the position of occurrence of degradation or abnormality in a polymer-insulated electric cable. This paper demonstrates that this method is also applicable even if the degradation or abnormality occurs uniformly over the entire cable length.
