  • A normally-distributed crosstalk model for silicon photomultipliers

    摘要: Optical crosstalk (OCT) in silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) occurs when photon detection in a microcell leads to the production of further photons that are also detected. Various models have been considered to predict experimental data with varying degrees of success. In this paper, we introduce the Normally-Distributed Crosstalk Model (NDCM), where the probability of triggering additional microcells is given by a 2-d normal distribution with a standard deviation of ??: a device-specific parameter representing OCT photon propagation path length in terms of microcell pitch. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of NDCM are compared to existing models and experimental data from the CHEC-S camera developed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array, which suggests that OCT occurs with a ?? ≈ 5 microcells in this device.

  • Crosstalk reduction of integrated optical waveguides with nonuniform subwavelength silicon strips

    摘要: Suppression of the crosstalk between adjacent waveguides is important yet challenging in the development of compact and dense photonic integrated circuits (PICs). During the past few years, a few of excellent approaches have been proposed to achieve this goal. Here, we propose a novel strategy by introducing nonuniform subwavelength strips between adjacent waveguides. In order to determine the widths and positions of nonuniform subwavelength strips, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is utilized. Numerical results demonstrate that the coupling length between adjacent waveguides is increased by three (five) orders of magnitude in comparison with the case of uniform (no) subwavelength strips. Our method greatly reduces crosstalk and is expected to achieve a highly compact integrated density of PICs.

  • Investigation of modulation transfer function in InGaAs photodetector small pitch array based on three-dimensional numerical analysis

    摘要: Three-dimensional numerical simulation technology was used to investigate the influence of structural and material parameters on the modulation transfer function (MTF) of lattice matched InGaAs/InP planar small pitch arrays. We found that extending depletion zone through increasing depth of diffusion junction and reducing the doping concentration in the absorption layer plays a critical role in optimizing the MTF of arrays. And it is highly worth noting that the very optimization effects become even more pronounced in smaller pitch arrays, which offers valuable references to restrain crosstalk in highly dense array and strengthen the imaging ability of large format photodetector system in future. However, the inevitable cost of deteriorating the specific detectivity should not be ignored. And hence, junction depth and doping concentration of the absorption layer need to be balanced in actual preparation. In addition, the effects of lattice temperature on MTF and crosstalk in arrays were also discussed. The inter-pixel crosstalk deteriorates seriously as rising lattice temperature. A stronger impact of lattice temperature on MTF of larger pitch arrays has been confirmed. This work offers important reference to suppress inter-pixel crosstalk in obtaining the high-resolution imaging for InGaAs photodetector focal plane array.

    摘要: Phase manipulation of four-mode phase-sensitive (4MPS) process was developed as a means for suppression of high-order four wave mixing (HoFWM) terms in dual-pump driven parametric wavelength multicasting and, consequently, for reduction of inter-channel crosstalk and inter-channel interference. In contrast to the previous studies that focused on power stabilization and conversion efficiency maximization, the investigation in this paper focuses on the evolution of the inter-channel HoFWM tones, whose suppression can be accomplished by arranging the phases of signals in a complementary manner. In addition, broadband 4MPS multicasting with suppressed HoFWM effects over 100-nm bandwidth, reaching up to 12-dB suppression ratio was demonstrated.

    摘要: Time reversal (TR) exploits spatial diversity to achieve spatial and temporal focusing in complex environments. Over the last decade, the TR concept has been applied successfully to phase-coherent acoustic communications in time-varying multipath ocean environments, as an alternative to conventional adaptive multichannel equalization. Temporal focusing (pulse compression) mitigates the intersymbol interference (ISI) and subsequent single-channel equalization removes the residual ISI, thus providing nearly optimal performance in theory. The spatial focusing capability facilitates multiuser or multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) communications without explicit use of time, frequency, or code division multiplexing, while an adaptive TR approach can reduce further the crosstalk among users or multiple transmitters. TR communications can be extended easily to time-varying channels using a block-based approach with channel updates. This paper provides an overview of TR communications in both shallow and deep water and recent advances including bidirectional equalization, multiuser communications with mobile users, and communication with a glider serving as a mobile gateway.

    摘要: This paper focuses on upstream signaling in TWDM-PON (one of the two systems speci?ed in the new series of ITU-T G.989.x Recommendations for NG-PON2), for what concerns the discovery phase of a new ONU. The key idea is that a new ONU, that needs to be discovered by the OLT, would send a low bit rate signal that is set to a suf?ciently low-power level to not affect signi?cantly the upstream transmission performance of already active ONUs. We properly dimension the key physical layer parameters of this technique and demonstrate it experimentally. We named this proposal as “photon ranging” due to its ultralow-power transmission and we experimentally demonstrate its feasibility. As a “side effect” of this study, we had to deeply revise the power penalty generated by the optical interferometric crosstalk, the main impairment that impacts the proposed setup, obtaining new results that may be of interest also in areas not directly related to the speci?c framework of TWDM-PON.

  • Multichannel Spatially Nonhomogeneous Focused Vector Vortex Beams for Quantum Experiments

    摘要: The utilization of vector vortex beams (VVBs) in quantum experiments has recently become a topic of tremendous interest. However, achieving a focused, high-resolution, transmission-type, multichannel, and nonhomogeneously polarized VVB array remains a great challenge. Here, by introducing a degree of freedom on a high-order Poincaré sphere in the form of latitude-polarization control and locally tailoring the phase and transverse polarization distributions at the subwavelength scale, a single transmission-type dielectric metalens design for producing a multichannel, spatially nonhomogeneous, focused VVB array is demonstrated. Three special kinds of lattices (triangle, square, and rhombus) are demonstrated, yielding independently controllable orbital angular momentum states and polarization states of a tightly focused field in each channel. Furthermore, by using only the proposed metalens and a polarizer, a mode-demultiplexing system is realized with a mode crosstalk as low as ?34.8 dB for all four channels. The results offer a robust technological foundation for exploiting spatial degrees of freedom of structured light in the miniaturization and integration of quantum photonics devices.
