Carrier Beating Impairment in Weakly Coupled Multicore Fiber-Based IM/DD Systems
摘要: Weakly coupled multicore fiber (WC-MCF) is promising for use in short-reach fiber telecommunication systems in the near future. Intercore crosstalk (XT) plays an important role in WC-MCF-based short-reach (IM/DD) systems, because XT can significantly degrade system performance. For the first time, the combined effect of intercore XT and the frequency offset between optical carriers, which is defined as the carrier beating impairment (CBI), is measured and characterized by experiments and numerical simulations. The experimental results show that the CBI causes large fluctuations in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with a normally tolerable XT level. Such SNR fluctuations can additionally reduce the system’s XT tolerance (at worst 1-dB SNR degradation) by as much as 20 dB for 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) transmission. The simulation results show that the CBI is mainly affected by the specific properties of the laser source and the modulation depth of the transmitted signals. These results suggest that the XT should be designed to be much smaller for WC-MCF-based short-reach IM/DD systems when there is the CBI.

Crosstalk effect mitigation in black body warm-up cool-down calibration for Terra MODIS longwave infrared photovoltaic bands
摘要: The crosstalk phenomena in Terra MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) midwave-to-longwave infrared (LWIR) photovoltaic (PV) bands (bands 27-30) have recently been individually studied and characterized, and a correction algorithm has been developed. The routine calibration of the four LWIR PV bands uses an onboard black body (BB) based on a quadratic model for the relationship between the at-aperture radiance and the background subtracted instrument response. While the crosstalk correction has been successfully applied in both the routine BB calibration (scan basis) to correct the crosstalk effect in the linear term and the Earth view (EV) radiance in our previous investigations on the bands 27–29, the most recent work on band 30 demonstrated a newfound necessity to include the impact of the crosstalk effect on the nonlinear term as well as the offset. In this paper, we analyze the calibration calculation under a variety of conditions consistent with the MODIS Collection 6 settings to examine the impact of the crosstalk effect in the two terms derived from the BB warm-up-cool-down (WUCD) calibration. We show that with correct account of the crosstalk effect in the WUCD calibration, the sudden changes and other abnormal features that have been observed in the two terms for many years are effectively and remarkably removed. In addition, imagery for bands 27–29 using the calibration result fully corrected for the electronic crosstalk effect shows further improvement over previous results that account for only the corrected linear term, whereas for the band 30 different testing scenes validate the previous fully corrected ?ndings.

Simulation results demonstrate our proposed algorithm not only improves spectrum efficiency but also reduces average crosstalk in SDM-EONs.

摘要: A fiber optic planar accelerometer for low frequency micro-vibration detection is proposed. The measured sensitivity, resolution and directional crosstalk are 227.82 mV/g, 12.54 μg/√Hz and -45.88 dB (8-100 Hz). The temperature crosstalk is -0.5 nm/°C.

Ion-Induced Electrical Isolation in GaN-Based Platform for Applications in Integrated Photonics
摘要: GaN based Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) have now become a global contender for their wide range of applications owing their physical characteristics. The GaN material system acts as a promising platform; compatible with silicon and sapphire substrates. Both the carrier transport and carrier removal techniques are vital to develop the efficient platform for the integration of photonic circuits. We demonstrate the carrier removal mechanism in silicon (Si) doped GaN (0001) epitaxially grown on c-plane sapphire wafer using ion engineering of the devices. Ion-engineered regions within the active layers of the device are modelled, fabricated and characterized to assess the isolation created. Helium and Carbon ions with pre-designed doses and energies are used to irradiate the device structures. We have modelled and fabricated ion-engineered regions within the active layers and studied the carrier transport properties on said regions to isolate that particular part with either of active photonic components placed at the common platform. After ion irradiation, detailed analysis in terms of electric field dependent current characteristics, sheet resistance, carrier mobilities, activation energies, dark and photo currents under zero (ground) and multiple biases are examined to see the extent of charge leakage and to map the charge behavior under nominal operation. Device characteristics under wide regime of annealing temperatures ranging from 300oC to 1000oC are mapped to evaluate the thermal stability of implant driven isolated regions. Activation energies of implanted and parent regions has also been studied. The dark and photon driven electric currents at ground and under biased have been measured to investigate the photo-induced transport phenomenon.

Crosstalk Limitations due to Intercore Coupling on the BER Performance of an Optical Communication System with Homogeneous Multi-core Fiber
摘要: The effect of crosstalk due to inter-core coupling on the bit error rate (BER) performance of a fiber optic communication link with a homogeneous multi-core optical fiber (MCF) and a direct detection receiver with optical preamplifier is analytically evaluated and presented in this paper. Coupling coefficients due to inter-core coupling in a 7-core MCF is evaluated numerically with as a function of core-to-core distance (pitch) and relative refractive index contrast. Coupling length is determined against various index contrasts and at different core pitches. Crosstalk power, Signal to Crosstalk plus Noise Ratio (SCNR), BER and power penalty at any output core with light launched into other core of a 7-core MCF are determined analytically. The results show that there is mentionable deterioration in BER performance due to coupling induced crosstalk, and system suffers distinct power penalty at a given BER. For example, power penalty at BER of 10e-9 is found to be 4.0 dB and 4.3 dB for a MCF link of 10 km corresponding to relative refractive index difference of 0.0036 and 0.0030, respectively, for a pitch value of 30 μm and core radius of 4.5 μm.

摘要: This paper focuses on upstream signaling in TWDM-PON (one of the two systems speci?ed in the new series of ITU-T G.989.x Recommendations for NG-PON2), for what concerns the discovery phase of a new ONU. The key idea is that a new ONU, that needs to be discovered by the OLT, would send a low bit rate signal that is set to a suf?ciently low-power level to not affect signi?cantly the upstream transmission performance of already active ONUs. We properly dimension the key physical layer parameters of this technique and demonstrate it experimentally. We named this proposal as “photon ranging” due to its ultralow-power transmission and we experimentally demonstrate its feasibility. As a “side effect” of this study, we had to deeply revise the power penalty generated by the optical interferometric crosstalk, the main impairment that impacts the proposed setup, obtaining new results that may be of interest also in areas not directly related to the speci?c framework of TWDM-PON.

摘要: A high-performance numerical is proposed for fully coupled electrothermal simulation of electrothermal effects in resistive switching random access memory (RRAM) arrays. To enhance its capability for fast solving large scale problem, a J parallel adaptive unstructured mesh infrastructure and domain decomposition method (DDM) based double-level parallel scheme is employed to implement a parallel simulator. The performance of the developed simulator is validated by comparing with that of COMSOL Multiphysics. Further, the influence of conductive filament (CF) shape in the RRAM arrays on their electrothermal characteristics are investigated and analyzed.

摘要: We study the influence of the combined effect of laser phase noise and intercore crosstalk on the outage probability of direct-detection 10 Gbit/s on-off keying optical communication systems. We show that the laser phase noise can affect significantly the outage probability, for lasers with linewidths in the MHz range, for low and high skew-bit rate products. We also show that the laser phase noise effect on the received eye-pattern is qualitatively similar to the one found for high skew-bit rate product in the absence of laser phase noise.
