    摘要: An electrically controlled tunable interference based microwave sensor is demonstrated to perform time domain detection of single particles and measure complex permittivity of cell culture mediums within the broadband range of 12-18 GHz. Following set up is required to construct deep destructive interference nulls. Quadrature hybrid (QH), voltage controlled phase shifter and attenuator are utilized for each of the two branches. These comprise a reference branch and a branch containing the material-under-test (MUT). Coplanar waveguide (CPW) design was used as the microwave sensing structure and microfluidic wells were manufactured with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to contain MUT, reference and calibration materials. The capability of detecting a single particle (diameter of 6-6.4um) is reported compared to simulations. Cell culture mediums measurements of Luria Agar (LA) and Luria Broth (LB) medium over the above-mentioned bandwidth were performed to demonstrate the operation processes and lay the groundwork for future research.

    摘要: MXenes are an emerging class of two-dimensional (2D) materials consisting of carbides, nitrides or carbonitrides of early transition metals. Due to the metallic type of conductivity of MXenes and their 2D structure, they are an ideal candidate to replace the conductive materials currently used in plasmonics, especially graphene. However, the use of MXenes for plasmonics and metamaterials is in its embryonal stage and practically all relevant publications appeared in the last few years. In this contribution we first consider some methods of MXenes fabrication. We continue by analyzing the optical and electronic properties of MXenes of interest for plasmonics (especially spectral dispersion of complex relative dielectric permittivity). We proceed by reviewing some reported applications of MXenes in plasmonics, including among others conventionally designed chemical and biological sensors based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR), metasurface-based optical absorbers and MXene-based nanoantennas, as well as some possible applications in nonlinear optics. In addition to that, we propose some novel uses of MXenes in plasmonics, including chemical and biological nanosensors, superabsorbers with a variable widths of the nanoholes, etc. It is our opinion that the applications of MXenes in plasmonics introduced until now are only scratching the surface of a vast bulk of potential practical devices, structures and effects.

  • Error Tolerant Method of Dielectric Permittivity Determination Using a TE?? Mode in a Circular Waveguide at the W-Band

    摘要: We propose a new method for the precise measurement of dielectric permittivity of ceramics and polymers at millimeter-wave frequencies that employs the TE01 mode of a circular waveguide. At higher frequencies, accurately measuring the dielectric permittivity of materials becomes extremely challenging by using the fundamental TE10 mode of a rectangular waveguide. As the frequency increases, the dimensions of the dielectric sample that has to be fit into the waveguide become very small. Therefore, small fabrication imperfections that produce air gaps between the sample and the wall of the waveguide result in significant errors during measurements. In contrast, the TE01 mode of the circular waveguide that does not have an electric field at the surface of the waveguide is insensitive to small imperfections during fabrication. We measured the dielectric permittivity in small samples of alumina (Al2O3), magnesium calcium titanate (MCT) ceramics, and Teflon placed in a circular waveguide. The results showed that the method was very robust with respect to manufacturing imperfections: when dimensions of the alumina and Teflon samples varied by as much as 10% and 20%, the differences in the computed dielectric permittivity of the alumina were only 1.26% and 3.06%, respectively, and those of Teflon were 1.98% and 2.12%. In addition, when the high-dielectric permittivity material MCT samples were deformed by 5% and 10%, the differences were just 0.04% and 0.14% each, respectively. We believe that this new proposed method is also applicable to even higher frequencies in the THz regime and at a very high relative dielectric permittivity of larger than 10.

  • Wide-band enhancement of the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect in magnetite-based plasmonic crystals

    摘要: The transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) in magnetite-based magnetoplasmonic crystals is studied experimentally and theoretically. We analyze angle-resolved TMOKE spectra from two types of structures where noble metallic stripes are incorporated inside a thin magnetite film or located on top of a homogeneous film. A multiple-wide-band enhancement of the TMOKE signal in transmission is demonstrated. The complex dielectric permittivity and gyration are experimentally determined using the ellipsometry technique as well as Faraday rotation and ellipticity measurements. The obtained parameters are used in rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) calculations for studying the optical resonances. Our RCWA calculations of transmittance and TMOKE are in good agreement with the experimental data. The role of guiding and plasmonic modes in the TMOKE enhancement is revealed. We demonstrate that the TMOKE provides rich information about the studied optical resonances.

  • Systematic tuning of the photo-dielectric effect in Ba(Al <sub/>1–</sub><sub/><i>x</i> </sub> Zn <sub/><i>x</i> </sub> ) <sub/>2</sub> O <sub/>4–δ</sub>

    摘要: Systematic tuning of photo-induced enhancement of the dielectric permittivity (i.e., the photo-dielectric effect) in Ba(Al1–xZnx)2O4–d (BAZ-x) has been demonstrated by changing Zn concentration x and intensity of the incident light. The relative change of the dielectric permittivity (e0), defined as De0/dark, increases linearly with an increase in the Zn concentration (x), finally reaching approximately 30% at 1 MHz. The dependence of De0/dark on the intensity of the incident light shows a two-step growth as the irradiation light intensity increases, suggesting the existence of multiple photo-induced processes influencing the photo-dielectric effect of BAZ-x. The results of the present study not only give a clue to the mechanism of the photo-dielectric effect but also aid in the development of innovative photo-tunable functional devices.

  • Hydrogen-bonded and supramolecular ferroelectricity in a new hybrid (C<sub>12</sub>H<sub>25</sub>NH<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>CoCl<sub>4</sub>

    摘要: A new organic-inorganic layered halide perovskite ((C12H25NH3)2CoCl4) has been synthesized and characterized by: chemical analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and differential thermal analysis thermographs. The dielectric and ferroelectric properties have been investigated. Analysis of the ac conductivity σac (ω, T) measured in the temperature interval from 110K to 370K and at selected frequencies in the range 1 kHz< f<100 kHz and the results show that the Jonscher universal power law is accurately obeyed. The existence of ferroelectricity has been demonstrated by the hysteresis P-E loop. The collective data evidenced that the hybrid behaves as a proper ferroelectric rather than a relaxor one and undergoes an order-disorder ferroelectric phase transition at the Curie temperature Tc (Tc?360K) accompanied with a structural distortion from an intercalated to non- intercalated state as the other Co and/or Zn hybrids. Since the room temperature space group of the hybrid is centrosymmetric (P21/c), the ferroelectricity should be due to the supramolecular interaction which results from the induced dipoles. The hydrogen bonding system of the type N-H....Cl plays the key role in the mechanism of supramolecular ferroelectricity.

  • Peculiarities of band structure of one-dimensional photonic crystals

    摘要: In this paper, the peculiarities of the band structure of one-dimensional photonic crystals are studied, when the periodic (quasiperiodic) medium is inhomogeneous in relation to both the dielectric and magnetic properties. It is shown that the photonic band gap does not appear at small angles of incidence, in the case when the modulation depths of the dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability coincide. The possibilities of obtaining photonic bandgaps in the terahertz radiation region are considered. The features of the band structure of photonic crystal with different spatial periods of the dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability are investigated. It is shown that in this case, four PBGs appear in each diffraction reflection order.

  • Physical Properties of Pure and Nano Ag Doped Liquid Crystalline Compounds Containing 1,3,4-Oxadizole Unit

    摘要: Dielectric properties and other physical properties such as electrical conductivity (AC) and relaxation time or activation energy have been studied for two systems pure LC [V]6,6, [V]7,6, [V]8,6, [V]6,7, [V]7,7 and [V]8,7 and their doped with silver nanoparticles. The results show the increasing in real dielectric permittivity ? with increasing length terminal chain. So the real dielectric permittivity increasing with raising temperature. To compare between the values of (400) Hz and (4000) Hz we observe these values at the low frequency are larger than that in high frequency. Generally, one can see that the doping of Ag nano particles effectively reduced the permittivity of the LC materials with its large electric dipole moment. The electrical conductivity σ value for pure LC samples in general increases with increasing temperature. So we observed increasing of electrical conductivity values at high frequency. The time scale is discussed in terms of the Arrhenius plot. Generally, with increasing the temperature the time period that spends by molecules at the transition state will increase. The activation energy Ea values show the increase in the activation energy to the doped systems.

    摘要: Microwave radars represent an interesting solution to monitor the internal structure of the snow cover because the measurements are practically instantaneous, non-destructive, and can be remotely controlled to improve the safety of the operators. In particular, an innovative radar architecture based on two receivers can deliver, at the same time, the depth and the dielectric permittivity of the snow cover, this latter directly related to the physical parameters of the snow, such as the density. These parameters are fundamental to provide an accurate forecast for the avalanche formation. This paper presents the optimization of the dual-receiver radar architecture, in terms of the reciprocal distance between the transmitter and the receivers. Preliminary experimental results are also presented.
