  • Phenomena of Optical Metamaterials || Disorder in Metamaterials

    摘要: Since the emergence of the metamaterial, the disorder within artificially structured materials has been a subject of extensive discussions. Metamaterial at optical frequency can be considered as a kind of man-made architecture material possessing unusual properties. One of its remarkable features is that the equivalent permittivities on different directions differ from each other and can be varied by designing its structure elaborately. It is worthwhile mentioning that this property is enhanced by the presence of the disorder promises that metamaterial may serve for surface plasmons (SPs) propagating with more flexible performances than conventional metal or ordered metamaterial. For instance, dealing with the photonic crystals, some disorder can dramatically degrade the reflection and transmission properties, which are based on constructive interferences. This chapter covers three different models of the disordered metamaterials: (i) rotational disorder, (ii) sliding disorder, and (iii) positional disorder.

  • High-Resolution Shortwave Infrared Imaging of Vascular Disorders Using Gold Nanoclusters

    摘要: We synthesized a generation of water-soluble, atomically precise gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) with anisotropic surface containing short dithiol pegylated chain (AuMHA/TDT). These AuMHA/TDT exhibit a high brightness (QY~6%) in the shortwave infrared (SWIR) spectrum with a detection above 1250 nm. Furthermore, they show an extended half-life in blood (t1/2? = 19.54 ±0.05 h) and a very weak accumulation in organs. We also developed a non-invasive, whole-body vascular imaging system in the SWIR window with high-resolution, benefiting from a series of Monte Carlo image processing of the images. The imaging process enabled to improve contrast by one order of magnitude and enhance by 59% the spatial resolution. After systemic administration of these nanoprobes in mice, we can quantify vessel complexity in depth (> 4 mm) allowing to detect very subtle vascular disorders non-invasively in bone morphogenetic 9 (Bmp9) deficient mice. The combination of these anisotropic surface charged gold nanoclusters plus an improved SWIR imaging device allows then a precise mapping at high resolution and in depth of the organization of the vascular network in live animals.

  • Interfacial and Bulk Properties of Hole Transporting Materials in Perovskite Solar Cells: Spiro-MeTAD versus Spiro-OMeTAD

    摘要: Two spiro-MeTAD compounds (1 and 2) were synthesized, characterized by experimental and quantum mechanical methods, and used as hole transporting materials (HTMs) in perovskite solar cells (PSC). The new compounds differ from spiro-OMeTAD only by the presence of methyl substituents as compared to methoxy groups. This modification results in absorption-band blue shift by ~20 nm as compared to spiro-OMeTAD, increased glass transition temperature for 2, and reduced ionization potentials by 0.02-0.12 eV. Hole mobilities larger by five times were obtained for spiro-MeTAD /spiro-MeTAD, which is maintained in the presence of additives. Despite this improvement, J-V measurements in PSCs resulted in power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.2% and 17.05% for 1 and 2 HTMs, respectively, as compared to 19.24?% for spiro‐OMeTAD. Photoluminescence measurements of perovskite:HTM layers indicate much stronger quenching in the case of spiro-OMeTAD/spiro-MeTAD. These results point to the dominant importance of the perovskite/HTM interfacial properties as compared to HTM hole-transport properties in the bulk. Given that improved hole-mobility and energy-level alignment are the main targets of the current research efforts in this domain, our results alert on the necessity to give priority to improving perovskite-HTM interaction properties.

  • Molecular Simulations of Laser Spike Annealing of Block-Copolymer Lamellar Thin-Films

    摘要: We use molecular dynamic simulations to study the phase behavior of a coarse-grained lamella-forming A-b-B di-block copolymer under thin-film soft confinement for different heating cycle lengths, film thicknesses, and substrate-polymer affinities. This model describes the effect on thin-film morphology with a free surface (air-polymer interface) and a solid substrate. Our simulation results were first validated by showing that they capture changes for the order-disorder transition temperature with annealing conditions consistent with those found in laser spike annealing experiments, when the vertical lamella phase formed on neutral substrates. In addition, simulations with a substrate selective for a particular block revealed the formation of other phases including a mixed vertical-horizontal lamella and a metastable island phase having horizontal but incomplete lamella layers. The nanoscale roughness features of this island phase, and hence its surface wettability, can be tuned with suitable choices of chemistry and annealing conditions.

  • A systematic review of light therapy on mood scores in major depressive disorder: light specification, dose, timing and delivery

    摘要: Background: Depression is associated with prolonged disability, mortality, and morbidity. Ninety percent of patients with Major depressive disorder (MDD) have sleep problems. Light therapy has been shown to be effective in treating sleep disorders and MDD. This review aims to assess the characteristics (colour, intensity), exposure dose (duration and timing) and the mode of delivery (light boxes, visor etc) of light in reducing depression, measured by mood scores, in MDD. Method: a systematic literature search was performed on 6 major databases. The Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) Scale was applied to assess study quality. Result: Twenty-four articles satisfied the inclusion criteria. Effective light intensities varied from 176 -10,000 lux. Effective modes of delivery included light box, table lamp, visor and light emitting diode (LED) glasses. Effective light colours included white, green, and blue with the white colour being the most commonly used. The duration of light treatment ranged from 30 min to 2 h, and evening light generally improved mood. Conclusion: Light therapy, with exposure durations in the range of 30 min to 2 h per day, intensity range of 176 to 10,000 lux, in any of blue, green, or white light colour and exposure during morning mostly demonstrated a positive change in mood effects. Factors other than the light properties, such as anti-depressant medication use, depression episodes and severity, natural light exposure and sleep deprivation may confound the effects of light therapy.

  • Robust and Fragile Quantum Effects in the Transfer Kinetics of Delocalized Excitons between B850 Units of LH2 Complexes

    摘要: Aggregates of light harvesting 2 (LH2) complexes form the major exciton-relaying domain in the photosynthetic unit of purple bacteria. Application of a generalized master equation to pairs of the B850 units of LH2 complexes, where excitons predominantly reside, provides quantitative information on how the inter-LH2 exciton transfer depends on the distance, relative rotational angle, and the relative energies of the two LH2s. The distance dependence demonstrates significant enhancement of the rate due to quantum delocalization of excitons, the qualitative nature of which remains robust against the disorder. The angle dependence reflects isotropic nature of exciton transfer, which remains similar for the ensemble of disorder. The variation of the rate on relative excitation energies of LH2 exhibits resonance peaks, which, however, is fragile as the disorder becomes significant. Overall, the average transfer times between two LH2s are estimated to be in the range of 4?25 ps for physically plausible inter-LH2 distances.

  • Invited Article: Bragg stacks with tailored disorder create brilliant whiteness

    摘要: The scales of white beetles strongly scatter light within a thin disordered network of chitin filaments. There is no comparable artificial material achieving such a high scattering strength within a thin layer of low refractive index material. Several analyses investigated the scattering but could not explain the underlying concept. Here a model system is described, which has the same optical properties as the white beetles’ scales in the visible wavelength range. With some modification, it also explains the behavior of the structures in the near infrared range. The comparison of the original structure and the model system is done by finite-difference time-domain calculations. The calculations show excellent agreement with the beetles’ scales with respect to the reflectance, the time-of-flight, and the intensity distribution in the far-field.

  • Non-Hermitian approach for quantum plasmonics

    摘要: We examine the limits of applicability of a simple non-Hermitian model for exciton/plasmon interactions in the presence of dissipation and dephasing. The model can be used as an alternative to the more complete Lindblad density matrix approach and is computationally and conceptually simpler. We find that optical spectra in the linear regime can be adequately described by this approach. The model can fail, however, under continuous optical driving in some circumstances. In the case of two quantum dots or excitons interacting with a plasmon, the model can also describe coherences and entanglement qualitatively when both dissipation and dephasing are present and quantitatively in the limit with no dephasing. The approach, within a single excitation manifold, is also applied to assess the role of disorder for 50 quantum dots interacting with a plasmon, where we find that, on average, large enough disorder can help stabilize the ensemble average of the open quantum system toward a dark quasi-steady-state much faster than without disorder. While such single excitation manifold calculations in this size limit can readily be done with either the non-Hermitian or Lindblad forms, as one goes to larger Hilbert space sizes, the computational and storage advantages of the non-Hermitian approach can become more useful.

  • Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry to Detect Diagnostic Glycopeptide Markers of Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation

    摘要: Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG), an increasingly recognized group of diseases affecting glycosylation, comprise the largest known subgroup involving approximately 100 responsible genes related to N-glycosylation. This subgroup presents as various molecular abnormalities, of either the CDG-I or the CDG-II type, attributable to lack of glycans or abnormal glycoform profiles, respectively. The most effective approach to identifying N-glycosylation disorders is mass spectrometry (MS) using either released glycans, intact glycoproteins or proteolytic peptides as the analyte. Among these, MS of tryptic peptides of transferrin reliably identifies the signature peptides characteristic of CDG-I and II. In the present study, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) MS was applied to various N-glycosylation disorders including ALG1-CDG, B4GALT1-CDG, SLC35A2-CDG, ATP6V0A2-CDG, TRAPPC11-CDG and MAN1B1-CDG. This method does not require prior enrichment of glycopeptides or chromatographic separation, and thus serves as a practical alternative to liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization MS. The signature peptides are biomarkers of CDG.

  • Robustness of Optical Response for Selfa??Assembled Plasmonic Metamaterials with Morphological Disorder and Surface Roughness

    摘要: Bottom-up fabrication of metallized biotemplated nanostructures to form specific plasmonic nanoresonators holds promise as a means of achieving large-scale optical metamaterials. However, in contrast to top-down methods, the stochastic growth of self-assembled nanoresonators is prone to significant disorder and surface roughness, which naturally raise an important question about the robustness of their resonant properties in terms of structural imperfections. An aggregated-random-sphere model is developed to mimic the nucleated growth of metallized DNA origami assembly, leading to meta-atoms with realistic, experimentally observed morphological disorder and surface roughness. Using the well-known split-ring-resonator (SRR) motif as an example, the resonant properties of meta-atoms under different levels of roughness are investigated and a strong tolerance of optical response against morphological disorder is revealed. It is found that in SRRs, even with dramatic roughness introduced, the expected resonances are still observed, despite broadening line shapes compared to ideal smooth structure. Only for extreme disorder, which causes drastic segmentation of SRRs, does the resonant response disappear. The demonstrations are very encouraging for the prospects of bottom-up fabrication toward versatile functional metamaterials and metadevices.
