Environmentally Friendly InP-based Quantum Dots for Efficient Wide Color Gamut Displays
摘要: Quantum dots (QD) are regarded as ideal light emitters for current and next-generation displays. Hence, there is an urgent need to produce environmentally friendly QDs that show high efficiency and better color purity. From this perspective, a strategy of tuning the wavelength and spectral width is discussed to optimize the brightness and color space agreement. The critical parameters affecting photophysical properties, such as the uniformity of InP QD core, the thickness and shape of the ZnSe shell, the electron/hole distribution, surface dangling defects, oxidative phase, and the stacking faults in the crystalline structure, are examined. Also, quantitative analyses are suggested to understand the nature of the ligands so that practical applications can be diversified. Recently, the QD-LED using InP-based QDs with controlled shell structure showed a potential of future commercialization. As a further development, it is required to improve the stability via the control of inorganic and organic passivating structures.

An Area-Efficient 10-Bit Buffer-Reused DAC for AMOLED Column Driver ICs
摘要: In this paper, we proposed an area-efficient 10-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with buffer-reusing method to dramatically relief the severe area exploding issue in high-definition active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) driver integrated circuits (ICs). In our design, we implement the functionalities of a large number of switches and capacitors in conventional DAC by a compact internal buffer. Furthermore, we minimize the buffer capacity requirement by elaborately reusing the indispensable output buffer in the typical column driver. In this way, we can cut down nearly a half of the decoder-switches and simultaneously reduce the capacitor size from 8 C to 3 C without designing an intricate and power-consuming amplifier separately. A prototype 6-channel column driver employing the proposed buffer-reused DAC was fabricated by 0.35 μm 2P3M BCD (Bipolar, CMOS, DMOS) process and its effective layout area per channel is 0.0429 mm2, which is 42.8% smaller than that of the conventional 10-bit R-C DAC. Besides, the measured differential nonlinearity (DNL) and integral nonlinearity (INL) are 0.514 LSB/0.631 LSB, respectively and the maximum value of inter-channel deviation voltage output (DVO) is 3.25 mV. The settling time within 5.6 μs is readily achieved under 1.5 k?-resistance and 100 pF-capacitance load. Measurement results indicate that the proposed buffer-reused DAC can successfully minimize the die area while maintaining other required performances.

Organic and quantum-dot hybrid white LEDs using a narrow bandwidth blue TADF emitter
摘要: White electroluminescence is of particular importance for high resolution full-color flexible displays which employ the down-conversion scheme to generate the individual red, green and blue emissions from the color filters. Quantum dots (QD) light emitting diodes possess ultrahigh brightness and considerably narrow full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) spectra. Nevertheless, inefficient blue QDs limit the overall device performances. Herein, we introduced a boron-based blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence compound and utilized the host-guest system to construct the solution-process white devices. Red and green QDs combined with the blue emitter make it feasible to design the flexible white devices with the sharp peaks and thus intrinsically wide color gamuts. The proof-of-concept hybrid white devices with a single emissive layer exhibited the external quantum efficiencies of 6.9% (on rigid substrate) and 2.3% (on flexible substrate). The color mixing effect and energy transfer among the lumophores were exemplified with three sharp peaks at around 464, 538 and 622 nm, respectively accompanied with the corresponding FWHM of 30, 34 and 31 nm of each component.

Luminescent Down‐Conversion Semiconductor Quantum Dots and Aligned Quantum Rods for Liquid Crystal Displays
摘要: Herein, emerging applications of luminescent semiconductor nanocrystals are addressed, such as quantum dots and quantum rods as down-conversion materials used in liquid crystal displays (LCD). Their precisely tunable emission wavelengths and narrow emission bandwidths offer high color purity resulting in a wide color gamut with vivid colors for LCDs. Anisotropic materials, such as quantum rods, have the additional advantage of polarized emission, which can bring a significant improvement to the efficiency of LCD displays. The basic optical properties of these nanomaterials are considered, with a focus on quantum rods, and the challenges and progress in their assembly are discussed. Different techniques for quantum rod alignment are introduced such as shear-oriented, electric field and magnetic field assisted assembly, mechanical rubbing, stretching, and electrospinning. The photoalignment approach allows for an easy arrangement of quantum rods in-plane, and the implications of this method to patterning are considered. Different configurations of LCDs utilizing semiconductor quantum dots and quantum rods as down-conversion layers are also presented, and the potential applications that are enabled by the wide range of emerging materials are highlighted.

A Multi-Phase Switched-Capacitor Converter for Fully Integrated AMLED Micro Display System
摘要: A fully-integrated switched-capacitor (SC) DC-DC converter is designed for powering up an active-matrix light-emitting diode (AMLED) micro-display system. Stacking-transistor technique with three voltage conversion ratios is utilized to handle the lithium-ion battery range of 2.6 V to 4.2 V and to reduce the switching loss. A 101-phase interleaving scheme is adopted such that (1) output voltage ripple ΔVO is significantly reduced; (2) no external output capacitor is needed; and (3) SC power-cells are physically cascaded to encircle the LED array and drivers to reduce conduction loss. Two test chips were designed in 0.18 μm 1P6M CMOS technology. The first chip is a test chip consisted of the SC converter only. The output voltage is 4.2V and the measured maximum ΔVO is 52 mV. The measured power density is 74.4 mW/mm2, peak efficiency is 81%, and maximum output power is 258 mW. The second chip is a system chip integrating the SC converter with the AMLED array and drivers using flip-chip packaging. The converter delivers a maximum power of 216 mW with a 78% peak efficiency in the SC mode and a 91% peak efficiency in the linear regulator mode.

Wirtinger holography for near-eye displays
摘要: Near-eye displays using holographic projection are emerging as an exciting display approach for virtual and augmented reality at high-resolution without complex optical setups D shifting optical complexity to computation. While precise phase modulation hardware is becoming available, phase retrieval algorithms are still in their infancy, and holographic display approaches resort to heuristic encoding methods or iterative methods relying on various relaxations. In this work, we depart from such existing approximations and solve the phase retrieval problem for a hologram of a scene at a single depth at a given time by revisiting complex Wirtinger derivatives. We also discuss extending our framework to render 3D volumetric scenes. Using Wirtinger derivatives allows us to pose the phase retrieval problem as a quadratic problem which can be minimized with first-order optimization methods. The proposed Wirtinger Holography is flexible and facilitates the use of different loss functions, including learned perceptual losses parametrized by deep neural networks, as well as stochastic optimization methods. We validate this framework by demonstrating holographic reconstructions with an order of magnitude lower error, both in simulation and on an experimental hardware prototype.
