P-12.2: Active Matrix Field Sequential Color Electrically Suppressed Helix Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal for High Resolution Displays
摘要: In this article, we disclose a 3-inch 250ppi active matrix field sequential color electrically suppressed ferroelectric liquid crystal (ESHFLC) display. ESHFLC’s ultra-fast response time (~10μs at 6.67V/μm) enables the display resolution to be tripled via field sequential color technique. Photo-alignment technology provides ESHFLC with optimal anchoring energy which contributes to a high contrast ratio over 10K:1. Specific 3T1C pixel circuit is designed to convert the analog signal to pulse width modulation. Thus the field sequential color ESHFLC display is achieved on LTPS TFT panel. With the delivered prototype, we successfully demonstrate the active matrix FSC ESHFLC integrated display system. We believe this display may replace IPS or FFS in the near future for portable mobile market. Moreover, high resolution FSC ESHFLC can find more applications in emerging virtual reality displays.

摘要: Virtual Reality (VR) has been deeply researched in recent years, although the novel technology delivers some astonishing experience, it may also cause people the sense of imbalance, dizziness, and vomiting when wearing head-mounted displays (HMDs) after a long period of time. In this paper, we combine the light field technology into a novel panorama viewing system implemented on Unity to provide dynamic depth of field and natural focus effect for better user experience. The system is also coped with FOVE, an HMD with eye-tracking technology, to better track the eye movements and collect the gazing parameters, e.g., gazing point, for better user experience. With such a design, a more immersive panorama image/video viewing experience is delivered. An evaluation is held for the user experience, which shows that our proposed system reduces the refocusing time by up to 319 times and increases the subjective Mean Opinion Score (MOS) by 19%.

Ligand Shell Engineering to Achieve Optimal Photoalignment of Semiconductor Quantum Rods for Liquid Crystal Displays
摘要: The photoalignment process to align semiconductor quantum rods (QRs) in the liquid crystal monomer (LCM) matrix is a flexible technology; however, the optical quality of the resulting enhancement films drops at high concentrations of the QRs. The compatibility between the ligand shell on the QRs and the LCM plays an important role in avoiding this issue. Herein, several kinds of ligand shells on the rod-in-rod CdSe/CdS QRs are designed, without affecting the optical properties of QRs, and their compatibility with LCM molecules is studied. Promesogenic dendritic ligands in combination with relatively short alkylphosphonic acids are found to provide the highest optical quality, without QR aggregation, and so the high brightness of the resulting enhancement films, even at higher concentrations of QRs in LCM, which is perfectly suitable for the application in liquid crystal displays.

Stereoscopic Remote Vision System Aerial Refueling Visual Performance
摘要: The performance and comfort of aircrew using stereoscopic displays viewed at a near distance over long periods of time are now important operational factors to consider with the introduction of aerial refueling tankers using remote vision system technology. Due to concern that the current U.S. Air Force vision standards and test procedures may not be adequate for accurately identifying aircrew medically fit to operate this new technology for long mission durations, we investigated performance with the use of a simulated remote vision system and the ability of different vision tests to predict performance and reported discomfort. The results showed that the use of stereoscopic cameras generally improved performance but that individuals with poorer vision test scores performed more poorly and reported greater levels of discomfort. In general, newly developed computer-based vision tests were more predictive of both performance and reported discomfort than standard optometric tests.

Shape-optimized multi-mode interference for a wideband visible light coupler
摘要: We developed a wideband visible light coupler based on multi-mode interference (MMI) using silica planar lightwave circuit (PLC) technology. The MMI shape was designed by using analytical and numerical optimization techniques to expand the transmission range around the target wavelength. We used this method for green (G) and blue (B) coupler to expand G and B transmission range. The transmittances of the fabricated coupler designed by the hybrid design method were ?1.5 to ?1.0 dB at wavelengths of 430 to 465 nm and ?0.5 to ?0.1 dB at wavelengths of 508 to 625 nm, respectively. The coupler length is about 1 mm without an input/output circuit. The coupler can be used for the whole wavelength range of G and B as a GB coupler.

Leaching of indium from end-of-life LCD panels via catalysis by synergistic microbial communities
摘要: Currently, a large amount of discarded liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are being produced, and the improper treatment of discarded LCDs causes serious environmental pollution problems. Indium is the most valuable metal in LCDs and is present in such devices at a concentration of over 0.025%. In this study, the bioleaching of indium from end-of-life LCD panels was comprehensively investigated through three methods: S-mediated pathway, Fe-mediated pathway and Mixed pathway of S- and Fe-mediated, which yielded maximum bioleaching efficiencies of approximately 100%, 0% and 78%, respectively. Microbial community analysis showed that the dominant functional bacteria under the S-mediated pathway were Acidithiobacillus. The Acidithiobacillus genus catalysed the leaching of indium, which was mainly achieved by indirect bioleaching. In addition, the microorganisms can secrete enzymes and extracellular polymeric substances, which also contributed to the leaching of indium. Therefore, this work provides an economical and efficient biological method for future research and practical applications in indium recovery from solid waste.

16.4: Novel SFT Mode Pixel Design for High Viewing Angle of Contrast at Automotive Applications
摘要: Customers will concern about different optical parameters in different display applications. Mobile phone displays focused on high transmittance rates, the higher transmittance rates, the lower cost and power consumption. Automotive displays focused on viewing angle of contrast, especially at horizontal direction, because the CID is at the center of driver and co-driver. Therefore, the applications of SFT mode display change from mobile phone to automotive, the pixel design changes from vertical 2-domain to horizontal 2-domain. Tianma proposes a novel SFT mode pixel design, which adopts fake horizontal 2-domain and stretches the Common ITO space to the boundary of Source line. Compared to the traditional design and high contrast ratio design, the novel the contrast ratio and pixel design can transmittance rates about 20%.

Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon for Augmented Reality Displays
摘要: In this paper, we review liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) technology and focus on its new application in emerging augmented reality (AR) displays. In the first part, the LCoS working principles of three commonly adopted LC modes—vertical alignment and twist nematic for amplitude modulation, and homogeneous alignment for phase modulation—are introduced and their pros and cons evaluated. In the second part, the fringing field effect is analyzed, and a novel pretilt angle patterning method for suppressing the effect is presented. Moreover, we illustrate how to integrate the LCoS panel in an AR display system. Both currently available intensity modulators and under-developing holographic displays are covered, with special emphases on achieving high image quality, such as a fast response time and high-resolution. The rapidly increasing application of LCoS in AR head-mounted displays and head-up displays is foreseeable.

Holographic acoustic tweezers
摘要: Acoustic tweezers use sound radiation forces to manipulate matter without contact. They provide unique characteristics compared with the more established optical tweezers, such as higher trapping forces per unit input power and the ability to manipulate objects from the micrometer to the centimeter scale. They also enable the trapping of a wide range of sample materials in various media. A dramatic advancement in optical tweezers was the development of holographic optical tweezers (HOT) which enabled the independent manipulation of multiple particles leading to applications such as the assembly of 3D microstructures and the probing of soft matter. Now, 20 years after the development of HOT, we present the realization of holographic acoustic tweezers (HAT). We experimentally demonstrate a 40-kHz airborne HAT system implemented using two 256-emitter phased arrays and manipulate individually up to 25 millimetric particles simultaneously. We show that the maximum trapping forces are achieved once the emitting array satisfies Nyquist sampling and an emission phase discretization below π/8 radians. When considered on the scale of a wavelength, HAT provides similar manipulation capabilities as HOT while retaining its unique characteristics. The examples shown here suggest the future use of HAT for novel forms of displays in which the objects are made of physical levitating voxels, assembly processes in the micrometer and millimetric scale, as well as positioning and orientation of multiple objects which could lead to biomedical applications.

摘要: As computing power grew over the past decades, the bottleneck that remained, and remains even now, is communication between the user and the computer. Human Computer Interfaces attempt to be more ergonomic as well as try to improve bandwidth. This paper presents three different HCI solutions that use computer vision for different contexts: the first is a prototype customizable ‘paper keyboard’ which uses stereo vision, statistical foreground detection and optical flow to detect both striking (as on keys) and stroking actions (as on a touchpad) made on a customized keyboard/touchpad surface printed on ordinary paper. This allows the custom use of multilingual, pictorial, gaming-oriented, purely numerical disposable input devices. We next briefly introduce two more systems: an interactive, inexpensive, vandal proof, large public display, the ‘e-signboard’, and a home appliance control system based on visual recognition of hand gestures. All three systems have been prototyped successfully.
