  • Stable and compact nanosecond pulse seed source with diode laser driven by a high-speed circuit and a temperature control circuit

    摘要: We demonstrated a nanosecond pulse seed source with a diode laser (DL) of 1550 nm A short pulse generator and a short pulse driver came to form a high-speed circuit that drove the seed source. A temperature control circuit was employed to control the stability of the laser pulses. The experimental results provided that continuously adjustable 5 kHz to 25 MHz repetition frequency and 3.5 ns to 51 ns pulse duration were acquired. The ?ne tuning of pulse duration of seed signals was realized by adjusting the current of the laser in its operating current range. Stability of the output power over two hours was 0.13% at repetition frequency of 25 MHz and pulse duration of 3.5 ns, respectively.

  • Driver’s eye-based gaze tracking system by one-point calibration

    摘要: The accuracies of driver’s gaze detection by previous researches are affected by the various sitting positions and heights of drivers in case that initial calibration of driver is not performed. By using dual cameras, the driver’s calibration can be omitted, but processing time with complexity is increased. In addition, the problem of disappearing corneal specular reflection (SR) in the eye image as the driver severely turns his/her head has not been dealt in previous researches. To consider these issues, we propose a gaze tracking method based on driver’s one-point calibration using both corneal SR and medial canthus (MC) based on maximum entropy criterion. An experiment with collected data from 26 subjects (wearing nothing, glasses, sunglasses, hat, or taking various hand pose) in a vehicle, showed that the accuracy of the proposed method is higher than that of other gaze tracking methods. In addition, we showed the effectiveness of our method in the real driving environment.

    摘要: The PADME charged particle detector system should detect positrons and electrons with efficiency better than 99 % and time resolution below 1 ns. The system hosts about 200 readout electronics channels whose operation has to be verified and commissioned. A custom based test system allowing to perform qualitative check of the produced front-end electronics has been developed and was used to test a total of 256 channels. The obtained time resolution was found to be consistent with the requirements and better than 500 ps for all the channels.

    摘要: Wide bandgap power semiconductors are key enablers for increasing the power density of switch-mode power supplies. However, they require new gate drive technologies. This paper examines and characterizes a fabricated gate-driver in a class-E resonant inverter. The gate-driver’s total area of 1.2 mm2 includes two high-voltage transistors for gate-driving, integrated complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) gate-drivers, high-speed floating level-shifter and reset circuitry. A prototype printed circuit board (PCB) was designed to assess the implications of an electrostatic discharge (ESD) diode, its parasitic capacitance and package bondwire connections. The parasitic capacitance was estimated using its discharge time from an initial voltage and the capacitance is 56.7 pF. Both bondwires and the diode’s parasitic capacitance is neglegible. The gate-driver’s functional behaviour is validated using a parallel LC resonant tank resembling a self-oscillating gate-drive. Measurements and simulations show the ESD diode clamps the output voltage to a minimum of ?2 V.

    摘要: Dynamic hand gesture recognition is very important for human-computer interaction. In vehicles, hand gesture recognition can be used as the driver's auxiliary system to achieve remote control of the instrument. To a certain extent, this system can avoid physical buttons and touch screens causing interference to the driver. In this paper, we describe a driver-assisted dynamic gesture recognition system to classify nine hand gestures based on micro-Doppler signatures obtained by 77GHz FMCW radar using a convolutional neural network (CNN). We further explore the changes in the accuracy of same gestures in a variety of experimental scenarios to help optimize the robustness of the system.

  • Emission of dispersed-type inorganic EL devices with frequency-variable high-voltage oscillation circuit

    摘要: Dispersed‐type inorganic electroluminescent (EL) devices composed of a transparent electrode, a phosphor, a dielectric, and a back electrode were prepared under various conditions using a zinc sulfide (ZnS)‐based phosphor. Additionally, a voltage/frequency variable circuit was designed. A compact high‐voltage/frequency variable circuit including three modules for boosting, frequency conversion, and voltage conversion was designed. A 140 Vpp voltage and a frequency in the range of 270 Hz to 2.4 kHz can be controlled by this circuit. The emission has begun to be observed at a voltage about 60 Vpp and a frequency of 400 Hz, at a voltage about 40 Vpp and a frequency of 1.4 kHz, 2.4 kHz, respectively. The emission intensity increased with an increase in frequency; emission with a wavelength of 450 nm was strongly influenced by the frequency. The luminescence and the electrical properties were affected by the preparation conditions including device structures, dispersion of ZnS:Cu, and Cl particles because of the current path generated by defects in the EL cell.

    摘要: This paper introduces a new circuit-level idea for driving optrodes in an optical stimulation system. Trying to make the stimulation circuitry energy efficient, the proposed idea is based on the basic concept of adiabatic circuits. Based on the idea proposed in this paper, a prototype stimulation circuit was developed and tested. The optical stimulation back-end also includes a micro-fabricated optrode array, specifically designed, developed, and tested for multi-channel optical stimulation in a semi-implantable optogenetic system.

  • A Global Perspective for Sustainable Highway Tunnel Lighting Regulations: Greater Road Safety with a Lower Environmental Impact

    摘要: Tunnel lighting installations function 24 h a day, 365 days a year. These infrastructures have increased exponentially and now connect quite distant locations, even on different continents. This has led European administrations and international regulatory bodies to establish regulations for tunnel safety with the lowest environmental impact. However, until now, these regulations have almost exclusively focused on traffic safety, and relegated sustainability to the background. Even though they recognize the need to reduce energy consumption, they do not propose any tools for doing so. Given the impact of these installations and the lack of a specific regulatory framework, Asian countries will soon be forced either to update previous standards for tunnel lighting or elaborate new ones. A better understanding of the weaknesses of European regulations combined with a willingness to embrace innovation could position Asia as a world leader in the regulation of more sustainable road tunnels. The objective of this research was to improve the sustainability of tunnel lighting installations through new regulations or amendments to existing ones, without impairing the mental well-being of users, who could potentially be affected by energy-saving measures. Accordingly, this paper presents and analyzes a broad proposal for formulating tunnel lighting regulations. The originality of this proposal lies in the fact that it integrates road safety, lower environmental impact, and user well-being. Furthermore, it is expected to broaden the perspective of regulatory bodies and public administrations with regard to tunnel installations, which would ultimately enhance their sustainability.

    摘要: Design of a piezoelectric driver for a microelectromechanical actuator in a small form factor for laser telecommunications is introduced. The driver introduces a number of challenges due to its size and power limitations as a Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) actuator. Because of the small form factor, the driver must be integrated into the actuator itself, which limits its size and power. The efficiency of a linear amplifier becomes a major drawback due to the dissipated heat of only 20 W for the Laser Telecommunications Module (LTM), low efficiency of a linear amplifier becomes a major drawback due to the dissipated heat. Switching Class-E amplifiers provide exceptional efficiency compared to non-switching solutions at a price of high frequency harmonics, which allows for higher output power without additional heat dissipation. The efficiency, however, comes at a price of high frequency harmonics, which must be reduced by implementing a High-Energy-Efficiency Interference (HEEI) and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). Driving a capacitive load, such as a piezoelectric actuator, at a high frequency with a Class-E amplifier requires a matching network to achieve the desired output power. The measurements were performed on a custom-made driver model for piezoelectric stack actuators with 270 V peak-to-peak voltage, 500 kHz switching frequency and a range of capacitive load from 2.1 nF to 20 nF.

    摘要: In most developing countries like Nigeria, the demand for electrical energy outweighs the supply. Negative economic and environmental impacts are also associated with its generation, transmission, and consumption. As a result there is need for the available energy to be efficiently managed. This project designed and implemented a microcontroller based energy saver and management system. The design of the energy saver and management system was aimed at coordinating the manner of use of electrical appliances, thereby reducing energy consumption in electrical appliances (such as fan and light) and devising a means of reducing the need for human intervention in the control of electrical appliances in a residential building. The project consists of a PIC microcontroller that utilizes a PIR sensor to detect occupants’ presence in the building; it also has a light intensity detection unit used to determine the level of ambient lighting as well as a temperature sensor to determine ambient temperature. The control signal from the microcontroller was used to operate the load driver circuit to switch the appliances on or off. The results show that the designed system can reduce the level of energy consumption effectively and efficiently.
