  • Development of an Interference Filter-Stabilized External-Cavity Diode Laser for Space Applications

    摘要: The National Time Service Center of China is developing a compact, highly stable, 698 nm external-cavity diode laser (ECDL) for dedicated use in a space strontium optical clock. This article presents the optical design, structural design, and preliminary performance of this ECDL. The ECDL uses a narrow-bandwidth interference ?lter for spectral selection and a cat’s-eye re?ector for light feedback. To ensure long-term stable laser operation suitable for space applications, the connections among all the components are rigid and the design avoids any spring-loaded adjustment. The frequency of the ?rst lateral rocking eigenmode is 2316 Hz. The ECDL operates near 698.45 nm, and it has a current-controlled tuning range over 40 GHz and a PZT-controlled tuning range of 3 GHz. The linewidth measured by the heterodyne beating between the ECDL and an ultra-stable laser with 1 Hz linewidth is about 180 kHz. At present, the ECDL has been applied to the principle prototype of the space ultra-stable laser system.

  • An Ultra-High-SMSR External-Cavity Diode Laser with a Wide Tunable Range around 1550 nm

    摘要: In this paper, a widely tunable external cavity diode laser (ECDL) with an ultra-high side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) was fabricated. Three configurations were constructed to investigate the relationship between the grating features and the SMSR. When a 1200 grooves/mm grating with a first order diffraction efficiency of 91% is utilized in the external-cavity laser system, a maximum SMSR of 65 dB can be achieved. In addition, the tunable range reaches 209.9 nm. The results show that the laser performance can be improved by proper high grating groove number and first-order diffraction efficiency.

  • Development of an optical pressure measurement system using an external cavity diode laser with a wide tunable frequency range

    摘要: Optical pressure measurement systems can precisely measure pressure from vacuum to high pressure with a single apparatus. However, the continuously measurable range without interrupting measurement is limited to less than 1 kPa. In this study, an optical pressure measurement system with a wide continuous measurable range was developed. The optical system can continuously measure a pressure range of 18 kPa when using nitrogen gas by using a Littrow external cavity diode laser as its light source. First, discrete pressure points from vacuum to atmospheric pressure were measured. The repeatability and non-linearity of the differences between the measured values had standard deviations of 0.1 Pa and 0.5 Pa, respectively. Next, a pressure range from 91 kPa to 109 kPa was continuously measured. The results showed that the linearity characteristics of gauges as a function of pressure can be evaluated precisely using our optical pressure measurement system.

  • Dynamic mode matching of internal and external cavities for enhancing the mode-hop-free synchronous tuning characteristics of an external-cavity diode laser

    摘要: This paper proposed an external-cavity diode laser (ECDL) that has low-frequency tuning (< 10 Hz) ability using the synchronous tuning principle. However, during high-frequency tuning, the mechanical vibration of the external-cavity system inherent in the ECDL is excited, which will break the mode matching of the internal and external cavities and greatly decrease the mode-hop-free (MHF) tuning range of the ECDL. To obtain a wide MHF range at high-frequency tuning, we used an active internal-cavity mode control method with an inductance–resistance–capacitance (LRC) filter to implement the dynamic mode matching of the internal and external cavities. After using the LRC filter, the experimental results indicated that the MHF tuning range at high-frequency tuning was significantly improved and a maximum wavelength tuning rate of 6.21 THz/s was obtained at tuning frequency of 30 Hz using an uncoated laser diode with a central wavelength of 785 nm.

  • Development of an interference-filter-type external-cavity diode laser for resonance ionization spectroscopy of strontium

    摘要: A frequency tunable external-cavity diode laser (ECDL) using a narrow bandwidth (~0.3 nm) interference filter has been developed for resonance ionization spectroscopy of strontium (Sr) with high isotopic selectivity. Improved wavelength and single mode stabilities of this interference-filter-type ECDL (IF-ECDL) over a commonly used (also home-made) Littrow-type ECDL were theoretically expected and experimentally confirmed by both a wavelength meter and a home-made Fabry-Perot interferometer. The measured spectral profile of the dominant isotope 88Sr using our IF-ECDL in the 689.4 nm intercombination transition shows that the Lorentzian component (~1.3 MHz) of the spectrum width is consistent with the obtained fringe width of the interferometer. High 90Sr isotopic selectivity of ~104 with respect to 88Sr is expected in this transition, which indicates that even if the manufacturing accuracy is not comparable to commercial Littrow-type ECDLs, our compact IF-ECDL having sufficient wavelength stability is a promising laser source for background-free analysis of radioactive 90Sr in marine samples.
