  • Switchable and dual-wavelength self-Q-switched fiber laser based on a homemade Er/Yb double clad fiber and polarization maintaining fiber Bragg grating

    摘要: We report an experimental study on the self-Q-switched operation of a linear cavity fiber laser based on a homemade Er/Yb double clad fiber as gain medium. The parameters of the self-Q-switched pulses depend on the active fiber length of 2, 3, and 4 m. With a maximum fiber length of 4 m, stable self-Q-switched pulses are obtained for the whole 976 nm pump range, with a minimum pulse duration of 1.24 μs and a maximum repetition rate of 92.57 kHz. When the fiber length is shortened to 2 m, the range of the pump power level, at which the self-Q-switched operation is attained, is significantly diminished. Besides, dual-wavelength and switchable single-wavelength laser operations of the fiber laser are achieved by using a polarization maintaining fiber Bragg grating as spectral filter. Laser wavelengths at 1536.7 and 1537.1 nm with a line-width of 0.4 nm are obtained. The maximum average output power for the Q-switched laser operating in the dual-wavelength regime is 472 mW.

  • Diode-pumped single-pass tunable mid-infrared gas Raman source by methane-filled hollow-core fiber

    摘要: We report here, to the best of our knowledge, the first diode-pumped single-pass tunable mid-infrared fiber gas Raman laser source using methane-filled hollow-core fibers. Pumped by a homemade tunable high peak-power amplified diode laser, whose wavelength covers the range of 1540 nm to 1560 nm, the mid-infrared laser emission over the range of 2796 nm to 2863 nm is generated by the stimulated Raman scattering of methane molecules. The highest average output power of ~34 mW at 2829 nm is achieved with 14.2 m fiber at 16 bar when pumped at 1550 nm. This paper opens new opportunities for compact tunable mid-infrared fiber lasers.

  • Soliton mode-locking in thulium-doped fibre laser by evanescent field interaction with reduced graphene oxide-titanium dioxide saturable absorber

    摘要: Soliton mode locking pulse generation in a thulium-doped fibre laser (TDFL) by evanescent wave interaction from a D-shaped fiber coated with rGO-TiO2 nanoparticles is proposed and demonstrated. The rGO-TiO2 nanoparticle coating serves as a saturable absorber (SA), and generates a mode locked pulse with a repetition rate, average output power and pulse width of 9.28 MHz, 11.17 nW and 1.49 ps respectively. The proposed laser has a central lasing wavelength of 1939.4 nm, which is the longest as of yet generated by evanescent wave interaction in a TDFL. An average signal-to-noise ratio of around 50 dB is obtained from the generation pulse, with minimal power and wavelength fluctuations indicating high stability. The proposed laser would have significant applications in various fields, particularly medicine for its operation in the eye-safe region of 2 μm.

    摘要: The interplay among the effects of dispersion, nonlinearity and gain/loss in optical fibres is a powerful tool to generate a broad range of pulse shapes with tuneable properties. Here we propose a method to optimise the systems parameters for a given pulse target. By reducing the system complexity and applying machine-learning strategies, we show that it is possible to efficiently identify the sets of parameters of interest. Two configurations are numerically investigated: pulse shaping in a passive normally dispersive fibre and pulse generation in a dual-pump nonlinear-amplifying-loop-mirror mode-locked fibre laser.

    摘要: We report on the generation and study of breathing dissipative solitons in a mode-locked fibre laser. Breathers exist in the laser cavity under the pump threshold of stationary mode locking. For the first time to our knowledge, breathing soliton molecules are also observed. Numerical simulations of the laser model support our experimental findings.

  • Towards visible-wavelength passively mode-locked lasers in all-fibre format

    摘要: Mode-locked fibre lasers (MLFLs) are fundamental building blocks of many photonic systems used in industrial, scientific and biomedical applications. To date, 1–2 μm MLFLs have been well developed; however, passively mode-locked fibre lasers in the visible region (380–760 nm) have never been reported. Here, we address this challenge by demonstrating an all-fibre visible-wavelength passively mode-locked picosecond laser at 635 nm. The 635 nm mode-locked laser with an all-fibre figure-eight cavity uses a Pr/Yb codoped ZBLAN fibre as the visible gain medium and a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror as the mode-locking element. First, we theoretically predict and analyse the formation and evolution of 635 nm mode-locked pulses in the dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) regime by solving the Ginzburg-Landau equation. Then, we experimentally demonstrate the stable generation of 635 nm DSR mode-locked pulses with a pulse duration as short as ~96 ps, a radio-frequency signal-to-noise ratio of 67 dB and a narrow spectral bandwidth of <0.1 nm. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with our numerical simulations. In addition, we also observe 635 nm noise-like pulse operation with a wide (>1 nm) and modulated optical spectrum. This work represents an important step towards miniaturized ultrafast fibre lasers in the visible spectral region.

  • Generation of sub-nanosecond pulse in dual-wavelength praseodymium fluoride fibre laser

    摘要: In this paper, we demonstrate a stable dual-wavelength pulsed output from a praseodymium doped fluoride fiber laser. These dual functions are induced by intensity-dependent transmission and loss due to the cavity birefringence. The two lasing wavelengths centered at 1298.26 nm and 1299.91 nm with a spacing of 1.65 nm and a 3 dB bandwidth of 0.11 nm and 0.13 nm respectively are obtained. The pulse width induced by the dual-wavelength laser falls within the picosecond region, with a repetition rate of 389 KHz and a maximum average pulse energy of 5.4 nJ.

  • Use of heavily doped germanosilicate fibres with a small core diameter in stretchers of ultrashort laser pulses at a wavelength of 1.03 μm

    摘要: The use of a heavily doped germanosilicate fibre with a W-profile refractive index and small core diameter in stretchers of ultrashort laser pulses with their subsequent amplification and compression in all-fibre laser systems is considered. The application of fibres of this type makes it possible to stretch, amplify, and then compress a laser pulse with minimum distortions of its initial shape and width. Due to the dispersion properties of these fibres, which allow the pulse duration to be increased significantly at a small fibre length and the third-order positive dispersion of the diffraction-grating-based output compressor to be compensated for, amplified pulses with an energy of 2 mJ and width of 250 fs, free of a picosecond pedestal, are obtained. Several types of fibres intended for the use in stretchers of ultrashort laser pulses are comparatively analysed from the point of view of their dispersion compatibility with a diffraction-grating-based output compressor.

  • All fiber mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser using a novel femtosecond-laser-inscribed 45°-plane-by-plane-tilted fiber grating

    摘要: Using the novel 45°-plane-by-plane-tilted fiber grating inscribed by a femtosecond laser as an in-line fiber polarizer, we demonstrate an all-fiber passively mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser. We characterize the grating for polarization-dependent loss, indicating high contrast and broad operating wavelength. The 45°-tilted fiber grating together with polarization controller act as an artificial saturable absorber suitable for mode-locking through nonlinear polarization rotation. By properly pre-adjusting the polarization controller, stable mode-locking is achieved for a pump power in the range of 300 mW–400 mW at 1565 nm. Owing to the net anomalous dispersion, a stable mode-locked soliton pulse centered at 1870 nm with a pulse width of 862 fs is reported at a fundamental repetition rate of 22.34 MHz. A long-term stability test reveals that the laser is quite stable for 24 h under laboratory conditions, confirming the capabilities of the 45°-tilted fiber grating for stable laser operation.

  • Electronically controlled generation of laser pulse patterns in a synchronously pumped mode-locked semiconductor optical amplifier-fiber laser

    摘要: A method for electronically controlled formation of user-defined laser pulse patterns in a synchronously pumped laser based on a semiconductor optical amplifier and an all-fiber resonator is proposed and investigated. It is demonstrated that synchronous pumping allows mode-locked operation with the laser radiation structured as an arbitrary pulse pattern repeatable on each cavity round trip. Direct electronic control of the structure and shape of the generated laser pulse patterns is implemented. The accuracy of the reproduction of modulation pulse patterns and waveforms delivered from a radiofrequency arbitrary waveform generator is examined. The time constraint on the pulse pattern formation in the steady-state mode-locked lasing regime is revealed, as well as the feasibility of the quasi-steady-state regime with on-the-lasing continuous modification of the pulse pattern structure.
