  • Performance Limits of FSO Based SAC-OCDMA System Under Weather Conditions

    摘要: In this paper, the Spectral Amplitude Coding Optical Code Division Multiple Access (SAC-OCDMA) is investigated in Free Space Optics (FSO) using Zero Cross Correlation (ZCC) codes to evaluate its performance limits in terms of link range. The system is analyzed under clear, haze, moderate fog and dense fog weather conditions. This system has been evaluated numerically and by simulation analysis by maintaining the transmitted power at 10 dBm, for safety reason, according to International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and minimum acceptable BER of 10–9. The simulation results shown that the present system can transmit 622 Mbps/1 Gbps up to maximum link range of 1450 m/1100 m and 61 m/54 m under clear and dense fog conditions, respectively.

  • A robust framework for visibility enhancement of foggy images

    摘要: This paper presents a robust framework for visibility enhancement of images degraded by foggy weather conditions. The proposed defogged algorithm is developed by the combining of modified visibility restoration approach and S-shaped transfer function for foggy weather degraded images. The proposed defogged algorithm works in two steps: in first step trilateral filter based visibility restoration algorithm is used for visibility and smoothness of the degraded images. Further in the second step S-shaped transfer function is used for contrast enhancement of the foggy images. The image quality metrics of proposed defogged and other existing visibility restoration algorithms are evaluated in terms of Fog Reduction Factor (FRF), Measure of Enhancement Factor (EMF) and blind parameter (g) on different foggy image databases. We demonstrate the strength of proposed defogged algorithm by estimation the thickness of fog in the input image as well as the output image. Finally, the simulation results and visualisation of defogged images indicate that the proposed defogged algorithm is highly effective and efficient for visibility enhancement of foggy images.

  • Biomimetic fog harvesting surface by photo-induced micro-patterning of zinc-oxide silver hierarchical nanostructures

    摘要: As water scarcity has become a major global problem, fog-harvesting technologies are considered an effective sustainable solution for water resources. Here, we report a novel approach to the fog-harvesting technology using zinc oxide-silver hierarchical nanostructures to mimic the Stenocara beetle’s back. Vertically aligned zinc oxide nanowires are first fabricated by a cost-effective and scalable hydrothermal method to produce a super-hydrophilic surface. Silver nanoparticles are then selectively synthesized by an additional photo-induced synthetic process on the zinc oxide nanowire surfaces to form a hydrophobic surface using the hierarchical nanostructures. The fog-harvesting performance was investigated using an artificial fog flow and by measuring the amount of harvested water for efficient fog harvesting. On the superhydrophilic surface, although the water droplets immediately were captured, they formed a puddle at the bottom of the surface due to the high adhesion between water and the surface. In contrast, on the hydrophobic surface, the capturing rate was very low even though the water droplets easily rolled off the surface. Compared to the non-patterned surface, the captured water film on the patterned hydrophilic region grew rapidly into a spherical shape and separated from the surface due to the surrounding hydrophobic regions. As a result, the patterned surface with 0.5 mm pattern size afforded a higher fog collection rate of 1233 mg/h than those of the superhydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces of 1105 mg/h and 879 mg/h respectively.

  • Radiation fog formation alerts using attenuated backscatter power from automatic lidars and ceilometers

    摘要: Radiation fog occurs over many locations around the world in stable atmospheric conditions. Air traffic at busy airports can be significantly disrupted because low visibility at the ground makes it unsafe to take off, land and taxi on the ground. Current numerical weather prediction forecasts are able to predict general conditions favorable for fog formation, but not the exact time or location of fog occurrence. A selected set of observations available in near-real time at strategic locations could also be useful to track the evolution of key processes and key parameters that drive fog formation. Such observations could complement the information predicted by numerical weather prediction (NWP) models that is made available to airport forecasters in support of their fog forecast. This paper presents an experimental setup based on collocated automatic lidar and ceilometer measurements, relative humidity measurements and horizontal visibility measurements to study hygroscopic growth of fog condensation nuclei. This process can take several minutes to hours, and can be tracked using lidar- or ceilometer-attenuated backscatter profiles. Based on hygroscopic growth laws we derive a set of parameters that can be used to provide alerts minutes to hours prior to formation of radiation fog. We present an algorithm that uses the temporal evolution of attenuated backscatter measurements to derive pre-fog formation alerts. The performance of the algorithm is tested on 45 independent pre-fog situations at two locations (near Paris, France, and Brussels, Belgium). We find that an alert for pre-fog conditions predominantly occurs 10–50 min prior to fog formation at an altitude ranging 0 to 100 m above ground. In a few cases, alerts can occur up to 100 min prior to fog formation. Alert durations are found to be sensitive to the relative humidity conditions found a few hours prior to the fog.

  • Laser Direct Structuring of Bioinspired Spine with Backward Microbarbs and Hierarchical Microchannels for Ultrafast Water Transport and Efficient Fog Harvesting

    摘要: Achieving effective dropwise capture and ultrafast water transport is essential for fog harvesting. In nature, Cactus uses the conical spine with micro-barbs to effectively capture fog while Sarracenia utilizes the trichome with hierarchical microchannels to quickly transport water. Herein, we combined their advantages to present a novel configuration, spine with barbs and hierarchical channels (SBHC), for simultaneous ultrafast water transport and high-efficient fog harvesting. This bio-inspired SBHC exhibited the fastest water transport ability and the highest fog harvesting efficiency in comparison with spine with hierarchical channels (SHC), spine with barbs and grooves (SBG) and spine with barbs (SB). Based on the fundamental SBHC unit, we further designed and fabricated a 2D spider-web alike fog collector and a 3D cactus alike fog collector using direct laser structuring and Origami techniques. The 2D spider-web and 3D cactus alike fog collectors showed high-efficient fog collection capacity. We envision that this fundamental understanding and rational design strategy can be applied in fog harvesting, heat transfer, liquid manipulation, and microfluidics.

  • Evaluation of Atmospheric Detrimental Effects on Free Space Optical Communication System for Delhi Weather

    摘要: Free Space Optical (FSO) communication systems are gaining popularity due to its tremendous speed, advanced capacity, cost effectiveness, secure and easy to deploy wireless networks. This technology has proven an effective choice for last mile applications and hard to reach areas where deployment of optical fibre links is not feasible. But FSO link is highly weather dependent and as signal passes through the atmospheric channel, the main impairments are the atmospheric turbulence, which induce fading and deteriorate the system performance. Delhi has a great potential for FSO communication because of its clear skies. Since there is no analysis for weather condition found in Delhi, this work provides analysis of typical Delhi weather condition ranging from heavy to light rain, fog and clear sky. The performance of FSO link is analysed in terms of attenuation and link length margin under different weather condition. The results are concluded to identify which atmospheric condition influences more on FSO link performance.

  • An improved color image defogging algorithm using dark channel model and enhancing saturation

    摘要: Fog is an atmospheric phenomenon that signi?cantly degrades the visibility of outdoor scenes. It is di?cult to lock in and track o? criminals clarity in the high-de?nition surveillance hazy image and driverless. In our research, we develop dark channel model, re-re?ned transmission map by transferring coe?cient. Compared with other defogging methods based on single color image prior, our method is a e?ectiveness of the proposed defogging algorithm, enhanced the saturation of defogging image and a higher quality depth map can be obtained of fog removal. In this way, a clear hazy image is obtained while maintaining the fog removing quality. Moreover, a good quality defogging image can be validated of fog removal by PSNR and MSE.

  • Design of a high-efficiency system with combined reflectors for a light-emitting diode front fog lamp

    摘要: This paper provides a design method for a light-emitting diode front fog lamp system based on a freeform surface and an improved quadric surface. First, a light-receiving reflector is used to converge the light-emitting diode beam to form an equivalent lighting point. Then, the relationship between the point and the light pattern on the work surface is calculated, and the freeform surface is constructed based on Snell’s law and non-imaging optical theory. Finally, two compensated reflectors are added at both ends of the freeform surface to reflect the unutilized light to achieve the compensation effect. By application of combined reflectors, the light pattern at the work surface 25 m away can satisfy the requirement of ECE R19 Revision 7. Also, this system has the advantages of small size and high efficiency because lens or prism groups are avoided. And the utilization of a compensated surface also increases light efficiency. Finally, a prototype model is tested, which also meets the regulatory requirements.

    摘要: This paper overviews the approach of the Elastic Networks research network to address the challenges posed by the convergence of networking and computing in the edge for a number of scenarios. Each section of the paper covers one topic addressed by the network. Firstly, we address reliability in Fog-to-Cloud computing (F2C). Then, an architecture for a residential SDN gateway featuring NFV is presented. In addition, switching based on SDN for data centres is studied for which a high-speed flexible packet matching in hardware is proposed. Resiliency in SDN controller location is also addressed. Finally, a technique for delay analysis in a single node C-RAN scenario is described.

    摘要: This paper investigates the impact of solar irradiance and fog condition on visible light communication (VLC) based car-to car (C2C) communication for two capital cities, New Delhi and London. The bit error rate (BER) variation over a day has been compared for both the cities for the month of March, June and December. It has been shown that for a given BER threshold performance, the impact of solar irradiance is more pronounced in month of June especially at New Delhi when solar irradiance reaches its peak. It has also been shown that in month of December, fog is one of the most significant climatic factors that greatly influences the VLC based C2C communication in terms of atmospheric attenuation. This paper also establishes the relationship for the minimum safety distance required between cars based on two-second rule, car speed and angle between cars. The minimum safety distance which would be required to avoid any rear-end collision especially during light or dense fog in the month of December has also been compared for New Delhi and London.
