  • EXPRESS: Potentialities of a Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Technique in the Study of Polymer Composites

    摘要: A laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique was used to evaluate the filler content in particulate epoxy–copper composites. A potential application for a direct and fast measurement of the filler in composites through the LIBS results is suggested using calibrated samples. The methodology used in this work makes possible the incorporation of LIBS as a quantitative technique for the study of particle metal filled epoxy composites, providing a method to obtain a direct estimation of the filler volume fraction.

  • Development of laser ablation absorption spectroscopy for nuclear fuel materials: plume expansion behavior for refractory metals observed by laser-induced fluorescence imaging spectroscopy

    摘要: The dynamic behavior of an ablation plume in low pressure rare gas ambient was investigated with laser-induced fluorescence imaging spectroscopy for three refractory metals, i.e. titanium, zirconium and hafnium. A comparison of the plume expansion behaviors for the species of these elements revealed an atomic weight effect on the plume structure formation. A hemispherical thin layer and cavity structure reported previously for gadolinium were observed also for these elements. It was found that the plume size increases as well as the layer thickness decreases with increasing atomic weight. For ground state atoms of Ti, substantial amount of atoms were observed even at the center of the plume. Also, the persistence of the Ti atomic plume was as long as 300 μs, which was significantly longer than the other species studied. Furthermore, the mass-dependent elemental separation was observed in the ablation plume produced from a multielement sample. These results suggest that the observed plume structure arises from the ion-electron recombination process and the recoil of the ablated species during the multiple collisions with gas atoms.

  • Rapid quality assessment of isogams using laser plasma spectroscopy

    摘要: In this paper, the quality assessment of isogams is demonstrated by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) using the comparative standardization method. Here, the mass concentrations of carbon and hydrogen, as basic elements of tar, relative to that of calcium, as an undesired element, are taken into account as principal parameters to determine the quality of isogams. Hence, the intensity ratios of H?? line of hydrogen (656.28?nm), the (0, 0) band of CN (388.34?nm), and the (0, 0) band of C2 (516.52?nm) to the line intensity of once-ionized calcium (317.93?nm) are considered as determinant markers for five different pre-known isogam brands. Qualitatively, classification of the isogams based on this approach is in full agreement with that obtained from the results of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. In FTIR spectra, two stronger transitions of 2849?cm?1 and 2917?cm?1 related to the symmetric and asymmetric stretching vibrations of C–H play the principal role in the analysis of samples. Furthermore, the results obtained from energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis quantitatively confirm the LIBS outcomes. And finally, to reveal the differences between isogams from various aspects, the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is exploited as a statistical approach.

  • Spectral Characterization of Collinear Double-Pulse Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (DP-LIBS) for the Analysis of the Chinese Traditional Medicine <i>Artemisia annua</i>

    摘要: A collinear dual-pulse laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (DP-LIBS) method was employed to analyze Chinese traditional medicine Artemisia annua. The spectral intensities and signal-to-background ratios of magnesium (II) 279.54 nm, CN 388.29 nm, calcium (II) 393.37 nm, and iron (II) 404.27 nm were used to evaluate the optical emission characteristics of A. annua induced by DP-LIBS. The temporal evolution characteristics, inter-pulse time, and laser energy values were optimized. In particular, the electron density and the temperatures of the plasma were reported as functions of the delay time. The results showed that the DP-LIBS had stronger intensity and better accuracy compared to single-pulse (SP) LIBS. The enhancement factors obtained using DP-LIBS for Mg, CN, Ca, and Fe were 7.2, 8.9, 13.8, and 3.4, respectively. This study provides important information about A. annua.

  • Correlation between laser spectroscopic studies and mechanical characterization of zirconia-based multiwall carbon nanotube ceramic composites

    摘要: The hardness of zirconium oxide-based ceramic nanocomposites was correlated with the laser spectroscopic studies by analyzing the samples through nanosecond and femtosecond laser to see the viability of this technique as a fast and in situ for assessment of mechanical properties in nuclear industry. Zirconia incorporated with different vol% of multiwall carbon nanotubes were processed by the high frequency induction heated sintering. The composites were characterized by the nanosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) with optimized delay time of 1, 2, and 3 μs and 200 and 300 mJ energies generated by laser Nd:YAG (λ = 1064 nm). The plasma temperature resulted by the ablation of different samples was estimated through intensity of selected zirconium lines using the Boltzmann plot method. The samples were mechanically characterized by the Vickers hardness test. The estimated plasma temperature and the ratio of Zr(II) with different intensities of Zr(I) emission lines show rather weak dependency and increase with surface hardness. The samples were scrutinized by the femtosecond laser micromachining through variation in depth and surface morphology of machined areas. It is found that deeper circular groove and enhanced erosion of disk shape by femtosecond laser machining are achieved for less hard materials and are in agreement with the LIBS analysis.

  • Time-resolved optical characterization of the interaction between a laser produced plasma and a spark discharge

    摘要: The interaction between a nanosecond laser produced plasma and a unipolar high voltage discharge was analyzed using time-resolved spectroscopy, fast photography with narrow band interference filters and profilometry. Here the laser ablation fluence was varied in the 60–1000 J/cm2 range. The 600-kW electrical discharge was triggered by an ablation plasma on the aluminum target at time 700 ns in order to enhance the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) emission. Most of the spectra were obtained from a spot 1 mm above the target and these were: time-integrated to gauge overall enhancement and time-resolved to investigate emission enhancement, temperature and density as a function of time. It was found that the time-and-space integrated LIBS signal was enhanced by up to one order of magnitude at the lowest laser fluence employed when compared with a conventional LIBS experiment. Also, that this emission increment could not be mainly attributed to an increased mass removal, but rather to an enhancement of plasma ionization degree as was observed by means of fast photography with filters. This causes longer plasma duration and more enhancement of ionic species than neutrals. It was also found that both the electronic density and the temperature increase when the spark discharge is applied, in comparison with the ablation plasma. Emission enhancement is inversely proportional to laser fluence due to the fact that for higher fluences, by the time the discharge is applied, the laser-produced plasma is already highly excited.

  • Stability evaluation of water droplets levitated by a TinyLev acoustic levitator for laser induced breakdown spectroscopy

    摘要: Stability of acoustic levitated water droplets, for laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), is required in order to obtain shot-to-shot reproducibility and low limits of detection. Although increasing the TinyLev levitator's operational voltage, at high voltages liquid droplets shatter when inserted at the nodes of the acoustic levitator. An alternative for stabilization, it is the use of a four beam laser arrangement, similar to an optical trap. In this case, we have found adequate not to use focusing lenses, since the goal is just to exert certain lateral pressure to counteract the lateral pressure instabilities generated by the acoustic levitator and simplify the optical arrangement. For an operational voltage of 8.5 V, a reduction on the droplet's horizontal deviation of 42% is attained at 650 mW laser power. At these experimental conditions, LIBS measurements were conducted on water samples doped with different metals. It is shown that, at this droplet's deviation, it is possible to analyze liquid samples despite a complete liquid evaporation is not reached. For Al samples a limit of detection (LoD) of 0.22 ppm is calculated from a calibration curve, and LoD of 1.18, 0.15, 0.94 and 0.7 ppm for Cu, Mn, Pb and Ni respectively, are estimated by signal to noise ratios values. These results show that even though, the final size of the liquid droplets is large, there is not a reduction on the lowest detectable concentration obtained, compared to other LIBS works on liquid samples. Leading up to conclude that pre-concentration effect takes more relevance than residual liquid's detrimental effect.

  • Stratigraphic characterization of ancient Roman frescos by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and importance of a proper choice of the normalizing lines

    摘要: In order to answer to some specific unsolved questions regarding ancient Roman frescoes from Villa della Piscina, already examined by other spectroscopic techniques, LIBS stratigraphic measurements were performed on the most representative sample fragments. We found that taking into account just the line intensities or applying a single normalization approach based on ratio of the element’s analytical line and a selected transition from a main sample constituent, here of Ca, might produce misleading results of depth profiling by LIBS. During the laser induced ablation, parameters of the detected plasma might change both due to the crater development and different overlaid matrix materials, as in case of heterogeneous painted samples, possibly realized with different techniques. We performed the theoretical simulations to select the pair of Cu I and Ca I lines less sensitive to variations of the plasma temperature in presence of local thermal equilibrium (LTE). However, when using not gated detectors as here, the experimental results showed that only a partial LTE holds. For this reason, the choice of the optimum normalization line must take into account also the energy gap between the excited levels of the species, which energies affect the emission lifetime and consequently, the intensity captured by not gated detectors. In following, to the each element’s analytical line a specific Ca I line was attributed for deducing the relative element distribution in sample. Following this approach and by detecting simultaneously up to 20 elements per laser pulse, it was possible to distinguish clearly by LIBS also thin overpainted layers of similar colour, and to recognize the painting technique used. Through detection of trace and light elements and studies of their correlations with other elements during ablation of on painted layer, in some cases it was possible also to establish the geographical provenance of the material used.

  • Spectral diagnosis of health hazardous toxins in face foundation powders using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES)

    摘要: In this work, we applied laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to estimate the amount of toxic heavy metals (Pb, Cr, Ni) in five different brands of face foundation powders available in the local market using standard calibration curve (CC)-LIBS approach. These samples contain toxic elements like lead, chromium, nickel which are highly carcinogens to cause eczematous and atopic dermatitis. The strongest atomic transition lines of lead (405.7 line), chromium (425.4 nm line), and nickel (336.9 nm line) were used as spectral markers to simultaneously detect these three heavy metals in face powder samples. The LIBS experimental parameters (delay time, laser energy, and focusing lens to target spacing) were optimized to enhance the signal to noise ratio in the resulting LIBS spectra. The consequence of self-absorption on the marker peaks used in the LIBS analysis was investigated and found to be insignificant. We calibrated our LIBS system for these three heavy metals, whose levels were found above the permissible limits. The face foundation powder used every day augments up to considerable exposure of heavy metals in the human body which could cause many skin disorders. Our LIBS quantitative results were also cross-validated by analysis using a standard analytical technique known as inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). This study is highly significant due to the excessive use of cosmetic products especially face powder that could affect the health of millions of people around the globe.

  • Spectral analysis of Miracle Moringa tree leaves using X-ray photoelectron, laser induced breakdown and inductively coupled plasma -optical emission spectroscopic techniques

    摘要: The antioxidant Moringa oleifera (a medicinal plant) leaves (MOLs) containing diverse nutrients are highly beneficial for the human health. The MOLs upon consumption can lower the blood sugar, cure the heart diseases, and reduce the inflammation. In this perception, the “primary nutrients contents” in the dry MOLs (pellet samples) were evaluated for the first time using the XPS, LIBS and ICP-OES techniques. The XPS analysis of the MOLs showed the presence of vital elements like calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), phosphorous (P), sulfur (S) and zinc (Zn). The LIBS analyses of the MOLs revealed the atomic and ionic spectral lines corresponding to the essential nutrients such as the Ca, Na, K, Fe, Mg, Mn, Cu, P, S and Zn. The calibration free LIBS algorithm (CF-LIBSA) was developed to quantify the content of each element in the dry MOLs. In addition, the LIBS results were validated by the analysis using ICP-OES standard analytical technique. The elemental contents in the MOLs obtained from the CF-LIBS analyses were counter verified by the ICP-OES results. Present results are highly valuable for the development of a traditional herbal medicine using the miracle MOLs.
