  • Response of Hinode XRT to quiet Sun, active region and flare plasma

    摘要: Aims. We examine the response of the Hinode X-Ray Telescope (XRT), using simultaneous observations with the Hinode Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS), for a flare, an active region and a quiet Sun region. We also examine the relative intensity calibration of EIS and XRT. Methods. EIS differential emission measure distribution (DEM) curves were used to create synthetic spectra with the CHIANTI atomic database. The contribution of spectral lines and continuum emission to each of the XRT channels was determined from the synthetic spectra, which were then convolved with the effective area of each XRT channel. The predicted total count rates for each channel were compared with the observed count rates. The effects of varying elemental abundances and the temperature range for the inversion were investigated. DEMs obtained from the XRT bands were also computed and compared to those obtained with EIS. Results. For the active region observations, the observed XRT count rates for most of the channels are in reasonable agreement with those predicted using EIS observations, but are dependent on the elemental abundances chosen. Significant discrepancies between predicted and observed count rates were found and are discussed for the adjacent quiet Sun region and also for the flare. Synthetic spectra and continuum emission contributing to the XRT channels are presented and discussed for the active region, quiet Sun and flare observations.

  • Variable optical/infrared counterpart to the transient gamma-ray source J0109+6134

    摘要: Context. We investigate the optical/infrared counterpart to the ?aring gamma-ray source J0109+6134, which is believed to be a blazar seen through the Galactic plane. Aims. The original aim of this work was to con?rm the previously proposed optical counterpart by means of studying its temporal behaviour. The study was later extended to infrared wavelengths as new data became available. Methods. We conducted a long-term di?erential CCD photometry campaign using the robotic Liverpool telescope. In addition, we used infrared satellite observations to also explore the source variability at these longer wavelengths. Results. Evidence of variability well correlated with gamma-ray ?ares has been observed so far only in the infrared domain. This fact strongly supports that the proposed optical/infrared counterpart identi?cation is correct. Moreover, our optical photometric campaign revealed an intense optical ?are with 1.7 mag amplitude that occurs on time-scales of weeks. This optical event was observed to evolve without a counterpart in the nearly simultaneous gamma-ray monitoring by the Fermi satellite. Gamma-ray orphan optical ?ares have rarely been observed in other blazars, and J0109+6134 appears to be an interesting additional example for future studies.

  • Leptohadronic single-zone models for the electromagnetic and neutrino emission of TXS?0506+056

    摘要: While active galactic nuclei with relativistic jets have long been prime candidates for the origin of extragalactic cosmic rays and neutrinos, the BL Lac object TXS 0506+056 is the first astrophysical source observed to be associated with some confidence (~3σ ) with a high-energy neutrino, IceCube-170922A, detected by the IceCube Observatory. The source was found to be active in high-energy γ-rays with Fermi-LAT and in very-high-energy γ-rays with the MAGIC telescopes. To consistently explain the observed neutrino and multiwavelength electromagnetic emission of TXS 0506+056, we investigate in detail single-zone models of leptohadronic emission, assuming cospatial acceleration of electrons and protons in the jet, and synchrotron photons from the electrons as targets for photohadronic neutrino production. The parameter space concerning the physical conditions of the emission region and particle populations is extensively explored for scenarios where the γ-rays are dominated by either (1) proton synchrotron emission or (2) synchrotron-self-Compton emission, with a subdominant but non-negligible contribution from photohadronic cascades in both cases. We find that the latter can be compatible with the neutrino observations, while the former is strongly disfavoured due to the insufficient neutrino production rate.

    摘要: This work proposes a forest model based on Gamma distribution to better describe the forest vertical structure for height inversion using P-band polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (Pol-InSAR) data. The proposed model takes into account the forest vertical heterogeneity and asymmetry, to which volume interferometric coherence is sensitive. The interferometric coherence associated with a volume where the vertical backscattered power varies following a Gamma distribution is derived. The effect of scattering center height standard deviation and mean elevation to the volume interferometric coherence is investigated. Finally, the strategy of multi-baseline on the proposed model for forest height inversion using P-band Pol-InSAR data is proposed.

  • Time Projection Chamber (TPC) detectors for nuclear astrophysics studies with gamma beams

    摘要: Gamma-Beams at the HI??S facility in the USA and anticipated at the ELI-NP facility, now constructed in Romania, present unique new opportunities to advance research in nuclear astrophysics; not the least of which is resolving open questions in oxygen formation during stellar helium burning via a precise measurement of the12C(??, ??) reaction. Time projection chamber (TPC) detectors operating with low pressure gas (as an active target) are ideally suited for such studies. We review the progress of the current research program and plans for the future at the HI??S facility with the optical readout TPC (O-TPC) and the development of an electronic readout TPC for the ELI-NP facility (ELITPC).

    摘要: Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) plays an important role in gastrointestinal (GI) tract observation and disease diagnosis. However, due to the limited illumination and complex environment in GI tract, endoscopic images are usually not clear enough to be interpreted by doctors or used for further processing. Although many algorithms have been proposed to improve image quality from different aspects, the balance of algorithm complexity and image quality is still a challenge worth exploring. In this paper, we propose a novel function named adaptive fraction gamma transformation (AFGT) to enhance the quality of images captured by the WCE. Characteristics of AFGT are adaptive to different luminance in an image and self-tunable to the statistical characteristics of different images. Besides, HSI color space is adopted for color restoration, namely, the saturation component is linearly scaled according to the enhanced intensity component. Experimental results show that performances of the proposed method in both visual quality and objective assessments are better than that of the state-of-art methods.

    摘要: Free space optics (FSO) has achieved prominence in extremely large bandwidth, unlicensed spectrum and low power secure transmission in the field of wireless communication. Despite the advantages, it is deeply impacted due to atmospheric turbulence and fog weather conditions. This paper considers different modulation schemes under the presence of atmospheric turbulence and fog conditions. The desired expression of bit error rate (BER) is obtained by modeling the turbulence as gamma-gamma distributed channel and under this channel condition, 16-PPM has provided better performance than other schemes. BER is considered for the channel performance evaluation. This analysis can help to adopt a modulation technique according to the channel condition.

  • Lost and found sunquake in the 6 September 2011 flare caused by beam electrons

    摘要: The active region NOAA 11283 produced two X-class ?ares on 6 and 7 September 2011 that have been well studied by many authors. The X2.1 class ?are occurred on September 6, 2011 and was associated with the ?rst of two homologous white light ?ares produced by this region, but no sunquake was found with it despite the one being detected in the second ?are of 7 September 2011. In this paper we present the ?rst observation of a sunquake for the 6 September 2011 ?are detected via statistical signi?cance analysis of egression power and veri?ed via directional holography and time–distance diagram. The surface wavefront exhibits directional preference in the north-west direction We interpret this sunquake and the associated ?are emission with a combination of a radiative hydrodynamic model of a ?aring atmosphere heated by electron beam and a hydrodynamic model of acoustic wave generation in the solar interior generated by a supersonic shock. The hydrodynamic model of the ?aring atmosphere produces a hydrodynamic shock travelling with supersonic velocities toward the photosphere and beneath. For the ?rst time we derive velocities (up to 140 km s?1) and onset time (about 50 s after ?are onset) of the shock deposition at given depths of the interior. The shock parameters are con?rmed by the radiative signatures in hard X-rays and white light emission observed from this ?are. The shock propagation in the interior beneath the ?are is found to generate acoustic waves elongated in the direction of shock propagation, that results in an anisotropic wavefront seen on the solar surface. Matching the detected seismic signatures on the solar surface with the acoustic wave front model derived for the simulated shock velocities, we infer that the shock has to be deposited under an angle of about 30? to the local solar vertical. Hence, the improved seismic detection technique combined with the double hydrodynamic model reported in this study opens new perspectives for observation and interpretation of seismic signatures in solar ?ares.

  • Digital pulse timing with semiconductor gamma-ray detectors using a wavelet transform technique

    摘要: Obtaining precise timing information from semiconductor gamma-ray detectors is of great interest for a variety of applications such as high-resolution positron emission tomography. However, pulse timing with these detectors through the common constant-fraction discrimination (CFD) method is strongly affected by the time-walk error that results from the inherent variations in the shape of the detectors’ pulses. This paper reports on the use of the wavelet transform for minimizing the time-walk error in digital CFD pulse timing with semiconductor gamma-ray detectors. The details of the method are described, and the experimental results with a 1 mm thick CdTe detector are shown. It is demonstrated that, by using the Haar wavelet transform of the digitized preampli?er pulses, the original tailed time spectrum of the detector with a time resolution of 8.22 ± 0.12 ns at full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) in the energy range of 300-550 keV improves to a symmetric time spectrum with a time resolution of 3.39 ± 0.02 ns (FWHM).

  • Spectroscopy of high-energy BL?Lacertae objects with X-shooter on the VLT

    摘要: Context. BL Lac objects detected in γ-rays and, particularly, those detected at very high energies (E > 100 GeV) by Cherenkov telescopes are extreme sources with most having redshifts lower than 0.2. Their study gives insights on the acceleration mechanisms in play in such systems and is also a valuable tool for putting constraints on the density of extragalactic background light, especially if several objects are detected at di?erent redshifts. As their spectra are dominated by the non-thermal emission of the jet and the spectral features are weak and narrow in the optical domain, measuring their redshift is challenging. However, such a measure is fundamental as it allows a ?rm determination of the distance and luminosity of the source, and, therefore, a consistent model of its emission. Aims. Measurement of the redshift of BL Lac objects detected in γ-rays and determination of global properties of their host galaxies is the aim of this study. Methods. We observed a sample of eight BL Lac objects with the X-shooter spectrograph installed at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) to take advantage of its unprecedented wavelength coverage and its resolution, which is about ?ve times higher than generally used in such studies. We extracted UVB to NIR spectra that we then corrected for telluric absorption and calibrated in ?ux. We systematically searched for spectral features. When possible, we determined the contribution of the host galaxy to the overall emission. Results. Of the eight BL Lac sources, we measured the redshift of ?ve of them and determined lower limits for two through the detection of intervening systems. All seven of these objects have redshifts greater than 0.2. For the remaining one, we estimated, using an indirect method, that its redshift is greater than 0.175. In two cases, we refuted redshift values reported in other publications. Through careful modelling, we determined the magnitude of the host galaxies. In two cases, the detection of emission lines allowed to provide hints on the overall properties of the gas in the host galaxies. Even though we warn that we are dealing with a very small sample, we remark that the redshift determination e?ciency of our campaign is higher than for previous campaigns. We argue that it is mainly the result of the comparatively higher resolution of X-shooter.
