    摘要: In this paper, a charging station (CS) is proposed that uses a solar photovoltaic (PV) array, a battery energy storage system (BES), the grid and a diesel generator (DG) set to provide uninterruptible charging of electric vehicles (EVs). However, these energy sources are utilized in a way that minimizes the operational cost of the CS. Therefore, it reduces the charging cost of the electric vehicles (EVs). To achieve uninterruptible charging and to minimize the charging cost, a charging strategy is proposed that prioritizes the use of energy sources. Based on this, the solar PV and BES energy are used as a priority. After that, the grid is used, and finally, a DG set is used when all energy sources are not accessible. This strategy is based on the cost of electricity per kWh. Normally, the rooftop solar PV array offers power at INR 4.5-5/kWh. The grid offers power at INR 10/kWh, and DG set offers at INR 17-20/kWh. To further minimize the charging cost, the single phase two winding self-excited induction generator (SEIG) based DG set is operated at the single point of saturation characteristic to generate much high power than its rated power. Moreover, a single two-leg voltage source converter (VSC) does multiple tasks such as, 1) generation of sinusoidal voltage in standalone mode, 2) regulation of generator voltage and frequency, 3) management of power flow, 4) reactive power compensation and harmonics current elimination and it also reduces the initial cost of the CS. To obtain ceaseless charging while connecting the grid/DG set to the CS, the point of common coupling (PCC) voltage is synchronized with the grid/DG set voltage. The CS provides both AC and DC output ports for charging the EVs. To charge the EVs on AC port, the CS uses solar PV array and BES energy to generate a sinusoidal voltage of 220V and 50Hz. Moreover, with both grid and DG, the CS draws power at unity power factor (PF) with current total harmonics distortion (THD) less than 5% as required by an IEEE 519 standard.

    摘要: In recent years, photovoltaic (PV) systems have been installed in Japan at an accelerated rate. The application of PV generation forecasts and the utilization of energy storage devices in power system operation are essential to reduce supply–demand imbalances and enable the use of more PV energy without curtailment. In this paper, assuming extremely high PV generation after 2030, we focus on the coordinated operation of a battery energy storage system (BESS) and conventional power plants. We propose a method of determining and updating the BESS charging/discharging schedule and generator unit commitment based on the day-ahead and intraday PV generation forecasts. We present an evaluation of this method based on the results of numerical simulations conducted for one year on a bulk power system model to demonstrate the effectiveness with which it reduces energy shortfall and PV power curtailment.

    摘要: In this paper, we propose a framework to generate stereoscopic content from a single image using the relative depth label predicted from deep residual network. Specifically, our framework first obtains a coarse relative depth label from the network and refines it to painting depth by sampling and interpolation, then an unsupervised clustering algorithm is employed to separate pixels of different depths into different layers to generate stereoscopic images. Experimental results with good visual effects demonstrate that the proposed method can be generally applied in both outdoor and indoor scenes. Meanwhile the quantitative results on relative depth estimation from a single image are comparable to state-of-the-art. Further experiments show the application possibility of our method in VR and panorama.

    摘要: Image captioning has demonstrated models that are capable of generating plausible text given input images or videos. Further, recent work in image generation has shown significant improvements in image quality when text is used as a prior. Our work ties these concepts together by creating an architecture that can enable bidirectional generation of images and text. We call this network Multi-Modal Vector Representation (MMVR). Along with MMVR, we propose two improvements to the text conditioned image generation. Firstly, an n-gram metric based cost function is introduced that generalizes the caption with respect to the image. Secondly, multiple semantically similar sentences are shown to help in generating better images. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations demonstrate that MMVR improves upon existing text conditioned image generation results by over 20%, while integrating visual and text modalities.

  • A polarization-resolved study of nanopatterned photoconductive antenna for enhanced Terahertz emission

    摘要: Terahertz (THz) frequencies, despite having the potential for several important applications, have been relatively under-explored in the past owing to the unavailability of proper sources and detectors. The scenario has been changing over the last few decades due to the advent of convenient THz sources and detectors. THz photo-conductive antennas (PCA), due to their attractive features, such as cost-effectiveness, room temperature operation, is playing a key role in current and future research prospect in the field of THz spectroscopy, both as source and detectors. Complex PCA designs have been proposed and studied to boost the THz emission efficiencies. Elucidating the underlying physics in such devices requires a thorough investigation of a few physical parameters. This requires the integration of several experimental techniques under identical conditions. In this article, we show such a study, including a parametric variation of pump polarization, conducted on a PCA with nanopatterned active region which boosts the emitted THz radiation. Through the set of measurements, we unravel the subtle interplay of the various physical processes responsible for the emission of THz radiation from the device.

  • Enhanced solar steam generation using carbon nanotube membrane distillation device with heat localization

    摘要: High-efficiency solar steam generation through interfacial solar heating of the membrane is a promising approach to alleviate the shortage of freshwater resources. In this work, we developed a membrane distillation device (MDD), consisting of a carbon nanotube (CNT) membrane as solar absorption layer, a qualitative filter paper as water transmission pipeline and an aerogel blanket as thermal insulator to achieve efficient solar harvesting and heat localization for enhancing water evaporation. The results illustrated that the MDD achieved a thermal conversion efficiency of up to 84.6% at a light intensity of 1 kW m?2 and showed superior cyclic stability for 10 cycles test. As a consequence, the self-assembled and reusable MDD was suitable as a promising candidate for seawater desalination.

  • 60-GHz 2-D Scanning Multibeam Cavity Backed Patch Array fed by Compact SIW Beam-Forming Network for 5G Applications

    摘要: This paper presents a 2x2 multibeam array employing a novel wideband linearly polarized cavity-backed patch antenna for fifth generation (5G) wireless communication technology. The antenna array comprises four layers stacked on top of one another. The proposed antenna element is composed of three substrate layers and excited using a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) aperture-coupled feed. The antenna element exhibits -10-dB impedance bandwidth of 36.2% from 53 to 76.4 GHz with very flat gain and excellent radiation characteristics. A prototype is fabricated and tested. The compact 2-D scanning multibeam 2x2 antenna array is demonstrated at 60-GHz, where the proposed antenna element is utilized as a radiating element. By employing a novel compact beam forming network (BFN) in the design, the proposed array achieves a size reduction of better than 28% compared to an array fed with conventional BFN, without degradation in the array performance. A wide bandwidth larger than 27 % for |S11|<-10 dB and a peak gain of 12.4 dBi is achieved. The array shows a good symmetrical radiation pattern in the two perpendicular planes. Verified by prototype measurements, the proposed antenna element and multibeam array with features of a compact structure, low cost, wide bandwidth and superior radiation performance, would be practically attractive for 5G applications.

    摘要: This paper focuses on the optimal siting of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in a Distribution Network with installed Photovoltaic Generation, in order to minimize the energy losses of the system. The bus voltage limit, as well as the ampacity level of the lines are taken into consideration as constraints, while the technical constraints of the BESSs have also been taken into account. Unified Particle Swarm Optimization is used as the solving optimization technique. Simulations are being carried out on IEEE-33 bus system regarding different scenarios and the results are presented and compared. A significant improvement in energy losses, voltage and line ampacity profile is achieved by the introduction of BESS units in a Distribution Network with high PV Penetration.

    摘要: Land and maintenance costs are often underestimated in solar power costs evaluation, but those become more significant as solar cell prices go down. A shared use of land, infrastructure and maintenance can both reduce the solar electricity price and boost new infrastructure projects by supplying the demanded power and acceleration of investment return. We considered the possible technical, economic and social benefits of PV integration in railroads and powerlines. Some of the conclusions could be also expanded to other linear structures, demanding land alienation (pipe lines, highways, etc.). Own energy generation could significantly reduce the investment return period of such infrastructure. A possibility of getting high DC voltages in PV systems directly could be the most demanded in the 1.5 and 3 kVDC powered railroads. The application of solar batteries could also significantly improve railroads embankment stabilization in permafrost regions, which becomes more pronounced in connection with global warming and Arctic regions development.

    摘要: This paper presents a novel ramp rate control and active power smoothing methodology for net-load profiles in large power distribution networks where high Photo Voltaic (PV) penetration levels exist. The novelty is to break large systems into virtual local net-load locations where energy storage systems (ESSs) technologies are installed to mitigate severity of the anticipated shape of system net-loads. The proposed methodology uses Fast Fourier signal Transformation (FFT) to generate reference curves that adequately fit ESS active and reactive power capabilities. Then, a least square minimization (LSM) technique is applied taking both ancillary applications into consideration as well as maintaining State of Charge (SoC) within limits for ESS to function efficiently throughout the day. The methodology is applied on a sample aggregated US power distribution system and a 8000 nodes US power grid using CYMEDist simulation platform. Results show significant level of net-load ramp rate reduction as well as smoothing of fast fluctuations due to both PV intermittency and load changes.
