Multispectral imaging: Monitoring vulnerable people
摘要: This paper describes the development of a new healthcare monitoring system for vulnerable people which uses a visible image sensor and passive infrared sensors, in an unconventional manner, to monitor daily living activities. It based on a novel method, using chromatic methodology, to process spatially and temporally the incoming multispectral data from the visible and infrared parts of the spectrum, to overcome the impact of noisy environments, illumination changes and a dynamic background. An efficient chromatic descriptor is suggested to improve activity recognition of vulnerable people. The new monitoring system is robust to distortions associated with healthcare systems and its descriptor has an improved quality of description. System performance was evaluated using a series of experimental data, the results showing the efficacy of using both spatial and temporal domains of multispectral data to deal with events that disturb monitoring systems. The chromatic descriptor achieved a better performance in comparison to traditional methods when describing daily living activities.

摘要: With the wide usage of long-term health care, research on wireless sensing system tends to focus on low power consumption. In this paper, a low-power and high-quality adaptive fuzzy resolution control system is created for wireless body sensor networks. The sampling clocks of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) can be adaptively selected by an adaptive fuzzy resolution controller. The resolution of the detected signals can be adaptively changed according to the immediate feature of the signals. Users can set the regions of two condition-windows to create four adaptive conditions for the resolution control. The adaptive fuzzy resolution controller can produce control signals to select an appropriate sampling rate for the ADC with a fuzzy decision technique. The proposed adaptive fuzzy resolution controller was realized by VLSI implementation. It can operate at 100 MHz with only 539 gate counts, and its core area is 7124 μm2, synthesized using a 0.18-μm CMOS process. Compared with the previous work, the work presented in this paper achieved a reduction of 33.3% core area and an improved peak signal-to-noise ratio of 15.47 dB under an abnormal situation in a wireless ECG health care monitoring application.

Simultaneous in situ temperature and relative humidity monitoring in mechanical ventilators using an array of functionalised optical fibre long period grating sensors
摘要: An array of optical fibre long period gratings (LPGs) has been demonstrated for biomedical application to monitor temperature and relative humidity (RH) changes in the air delivered by a mechanical ventilator operating in different modes. The LPG array consists of two gratings, where one was kept bare to monitor the temperature change and the second was modified with 10 layers of silica nanoparticles to measure relative humidity. A mesoporous film was deposited on the surface of an optical fibre LPG using the layer-by-layer method. The sensor was calibrated in a bench model against a commercially available temperature and relative humidity sensor and sensitivity of the sensor was 0.46±0.01 nm/ oC and 0.53 nm/RH%, respectively. The tip of the sensor array was modified with reflection mirror and placed inside an endotracheal tube (ETT) and tested in typical clinical equipment to enable the in-situ real-time monitoring of humidity and temperature. Temperature and RH changes associated with the breathing frequency of 8 and 15 breaths per minute were successfully monitored using developed sensor array.
