  • Digitally Fabricated Mobile Spectrometer for Multipoint Continuous Spectroscopic Analysis of Light Environment in Greenhouse Tomato Canopies

    摘要: A low-cost spectrometer, featuring a micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) sensor, was designed and manufactured using digital fabrication techniques. The spectrometer was morphed into a zelkova leaf-shaped case using a three-dimensional printer. The control software, written in the Arduino sketch programing language, measured the flux of photons in the 400―800 nm range, at 1 nm resolution, every 5 min. The obtained data were saved on a micro SD memory card in the comma separated values format. The spectrometer continuously operated for more than 3 d using a type B universal serial bus micro connector and a 10 Ah mobile battery. Four manufactured spectrometers were installed inside and outside of a tomato canopy in the experimental greenhouse of Wakayama prefecture, and continuously measured the spectroscopic flux of photons for nine d. The quantitative changes in the phytochrome photoequilibrium in the tomato leaves were estimated using the data from the continuous spectroscopic analysis. The effect of pruning under leaves on the illumination in the tomato canopy was quantified in terms of the leaf area index. We expect that the proposed low-cost and high-mobility spectrometer will be used in plant production fields.

  • Assessing Radiometric Correction Approaches for Multi-Spectral UAS Imagery for Horticultural Applications

    摘要: Multi-spectral imagery captured from unmanned aerial systems (UAS) is becoming increasingly popular for the improved monitoring and managing of various horticultural crops. However, for UAS-based data to be used as an industry standard for assessing tree structure and condition as well as production parameters, it is imperative that the appropriate data collection and pre-processing protocols are established to enable multi-temporal comparison. There are several UAS-based radiometric correction methods commonly used for precision agricultural purposes. However, their relative accuracies have not been assessed for data acquired in complex horticultural environments. This study assessed the variations in estimated surface re?ectance values of different radiometric corrections applied to multi-spectral UAS imagery acquired in both avocado and banana orchards. We found that inaccurate calibration panel measurements, inaccurate signal-to-re?ectance conversion, and high variation in geometry between illumination, surface, and sensor viewing produced signi?cant radiometric variations in at-surface re?ectance estimates. Potential solutions to address these limitations included appropriate panel deployment, site-speci?c sensor calibration, and appropriate bidirectional re?ectance distribution function (BRDF) correction. Future UAS-based horticultural crop monitoring can bene?t from the proposed solutions to radiometric corrections to ensure they are using comparable image-based maps of multi-temporal biophysical properties.

  • CHALLENGES IN APPLICATION OF LUMINESCENT MATERIALS, A TUTORIAL OVERVIEW (Invited Review)

    摘要: In this paper, a number of di?erent application ?elds of inorganic luminescent materials are being discussed. In a tutorial manner, it will be shown how device requirements are being translated into properties the luminescent materials need to have. To this end many di?erent material properties that have a strong in?uence on the device performance are discussed, such as the shape, the spectral position of the absorption- and emission bands and the decay time of the emission. The light yield under excitation with ionizing radiation, the energy resolution and the occurrence of afterglow are being treated as well. Subsequently, strategies are shown how to optimize these properties. Examples are given for light sources (?uorescent lamps and LEDs), radiation sources used for disinfection purposes and also for devices used in medical imaging and in horticultural applications.
