    摘要: This paper aims to build an image coding system based on a model of the mammalian retina. The retina is the light-sensitive layer of tissue located on the inner coat of the eye and it is responsible for vision. Inspired by the way the retina handles and compresses visual information and based on previous studies we aim to build and analytically study a retinal-inspired image quantizer, based on the Leaky Integrate-and-Fire (LIF) model, a neural model approximating the behavior of the ganglion cells of the Ganglionic retinal layer that is responsible for visual data compression. In order to have a more concrete view of the encoder's behavior, in our experiments, we make use of the spatiotemporal decomposition layers provided by extensive studies on a previous retinal layer, the Outer Plexiform Layer (OPL). The decomposition layers produced by the OPL, are being encoded using our LIF image encoder and then, they are reconstructed to observe the encoder's efficiency.

    摘要: The use of a reversible color-to-gray algorithm is an effective technique in practical applications, in terms of running cost, data quantity, security, etc. Most conventional image processing approaches cannot apply image encoding to color-embedded gray images. In this study, we propose a reversible color-to-gray method with resistance to JPEG encoding. To embed color information, the discrete cosine transformation (DCT) is employed, with good affinity to JPEG encoding. In the proposed method, first an input color image is converted to the YCbCr color space, and the DCT coefficients of the Cb and Cr components are embedded into the DCT coefficients of the Y component. Then using the JPEG quantization table, an appropriate embedding position is determined. Experiments were performed on standard color images, and the color recovery error after JPEG coding was compared and verified with conventional methods using PSNR and CIEDE2000.

  • Two-Layer Lossless Coding for High Dynamic Range Images Based on Range Compression and Adaptive Inverse Tone-Mapping

    摘要: In this paper, we propose a 2-layer lossless coding method for high dynamic range (HDR) images based on range compression and adaptive inverse tone-mapping. Recently, HDR images, which have a wider range of luminance than conventional low dynamic range (LDR) ones, have been frequently used in various fields. Since commonly used devices cannot yet display HDR images, 2-layer coding methods that decode not only HDR images but also their LDR versions have been proposed. We have previously proposed a state-of-the-art 2-layer lossless coding method for HDR images that unfortunately has huge HDR file size. Hence, we introduce two ideas to reduce the HDR file size to less than that of the previous method. The proposed method achieves high compression ratio and experiments show that it outperforms the previous method and other conventional methods.

    摘要: Color re-indexing is one of main approaches for improving the loss-less compression of color indexed images. Zero-order entropy reduction of indexes matrix is the key to obtain high compression ratio. However, obtaining the optimal re-indexed palette is a challenging problem that cannot be solved by brute-force approaches. In this paper we propose a novel re-indexing approach where the Travelling Salesman Problem is solved through Ant Colony Optimization. Our method is proved to achieve high quality results by outperforming state-of-art ones in terms of compression gain. Additionally, we exploit clustering and GPU computing to make our solution extremely fast.

  • A UEP Method for Imaging Low-Orbit Satellites Based on CCSDS Recommendations

    摘要: Remote sensing satellites allow continuous information acquisition from large areas of the earth and have been intensively applied in a number of applications, from agriculture to defense. A major challenge in remote sensing is that satellite communication systems present bandwidth restrictions and several issues typical of time-variant channels, which justifies the need for signal coding techniques. In that sense, this letter proposes an unequal error protection method for aerospace applications using the recommendations for source and channel coding created by the Consultative Committee for Space Data System (CCSDS) as frameworks. The proposed method makes use of the CCSDS-recommended convolutional code to ensure a channel coding step as low complex as possible, which allows implementation in a wide range of embedded platforms. This letter exploits the natural data division delivered by the compressor to unequally protect the information. The proposed method, which relies on a multiobjective optimization problem, allows one to find rate arrangements that minimize the distortion of the received image for a given value of an average coding rate within a granular range. The system performance is evaluated over an additive white Gaussian noise channel model. The obtained results show that the proposed method presents several advantages over an equal error protection strategy, and paves the way for scenarios with stringent energy and bandwidth constraints.
