Saliency Detection via Multi-Scale Global Cues
摘要: The saliency detection technologies are very useful to analyze and extract important information from given multimedia data, and have already been extensively used in many multimedia applications. Past studies have revealed that utilizing the global cues is effective in saliency detection. Nevertheless, most of prior works mainly considered the single-scale segmentation when the global cues are employed. In this paper, we attempt to incorporate the multi-scale global cues for saliency detection problem. Achieving this proposal is interesting and also challenging (e.g., how to obtain appropriate foreground and background seeds effectively? how to merge rough saliency results into the final saliency map efficiently?). To alleviate the challenges, we present a three-phase solution that integrates several targeted strategies: (i) a self-adaptive strategy for obtaining appropriate filter parameters; (ii) a cross-validation scheme for selecting appropriate background and foreground seeds; and (iii) a weight-based approach for merging the rough saliency maps. Our solution is easy-to-understand and implement, but without loss of effectiveness. Extensive experimental results based on benchmark datasets demonstrate the feasibility and competitiveness of our proposed solution.

Local Activity-Driven Structural-Preserving Filtering for Noise Removal and Image Smoothing
摘要: In this paper, a local activity measurement of the clipped and normalized variance or standard deviation is proposed to drive anisotropic diffusion and relative total variation (RTV) to work better for structural preservation. Firstly, two novel edge-stop functions are introduced for our local activity-driven anisotropic diffusion (LAD-AD) to efficiently remove severe artifacts and preserve the fine geometry structures in HEVC-compressed depth images. Secondly, we propose a simple yet effective local activity-driven RTV (LAD-RTV) with the way of the product between gradient and the local activity measurement for image smoothing and scale representation. Meanwhile, both color-sharing information and each-channel discriminative information are considered, which are significant to color image’s edge-preserving but not included in the RTV model. Besides, LAD-RTV leverages the form of the division of gradient and the local activity measurement to resolve the problem of general image de-noising by regarding the noises as the duplicate texture elements. Experimental results have validated that the proposed LAD-AD can greatly improve the precision of HEVC-compressed depth images and the quality of its synthesized image. Additionally, large numbers of results have shown our LAD-RTV is superior to several existing methods.

摘要: A novel, fast, and practical way of enhancing images is introduced in this paper. Our approach builds on Laplacian operators of well-known edge-aware kernels, such as bilateral and nonlocal means, and extends these filter’s capabilities to perform more effective and fast image smoothing, sharpening, and tone manipulation. We propose an approximation of the Laplacian, which does not require normalization of the kernel weights. Multiple Laplacians of the affinity weights endow our method with progressive detail decomposition of the input image from fine to coarse scale. These image components are blended by a structure mask, which avoids noise/artifact magnification or detail loss in the output image. Contributions of the proposed method to existing image editing tools are: 1) low computational and memory requirements, making it appropriate for mobile device implementations (e.g., as a finish step in a camera pipeline); and 2) a range of filtering applications from detail enhancement to denoising with only a few control parameters, enabling the user to apply a combination of various (and even opposite) filtering effects.
