Continuous-wave Terahertz Imaging Applied to Detect Infestations Caused by Insects in Grain
摘要: Detection infestations caused by insects in grain are important control measures for ensuring storage longevity, seed quality and food safety. The efficiency of the continuous wave terahertz imaging method to detect infestations caused by insects in wheat kernels was determined in this study. A continuous wave terahertz experimental setup was designed for recording of THz images corresponding to different infestations caused by different life stages of insects. The experimental results indicate that the absorbance is generally highest for un-infested wheat kernels and decreased at later growth stages from THz pseudo-color images. Our study intended to demonstrate how the method of continuous wave Terahertz imaging could be applied to detect Infestations Caused by Insects in Grain.

Recent Developments in Photovoltaic Materials and Devices || A Quick Maximum Power Point Tracking Method Using an Embedded Learning Algorithm for Photovoltaics on Roads
摘要: This chapter presents a new approach to realize quick maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for photovoltaics (PVs) bedded on roads. The MPPT device for the road photovoltaics needs to support quick response to the shadow flickers caused by moving objects. Our proposed MPPT device is a microconverter connected to a short PV string. For real-world usage, several sets of PV string connected to the proposed microconverter will be connected in parallel. Each converter uses an embedded learning algorithm inspired by the insect brain to learn the MPPs of a single PV string. Therefore, the MPPT device tracks MPP via the perturbation and observation method in normal circumstances and the learning machine learns the relationships between the acquired MPP and the temperature and magnitude of the Sun irradiation. Consequently, if the magnitude of the Sun beam incident on the PV panel changes quickly, the learning machine yields the predicted MPP to control a chopper circuit. The simulation results suggested that the proposed MPPT method can realize quick MPPT.

Immunolocalization suggests a role of the histamine-gated chloride channel PxHCLB in spectral opponent processing in butterfly photoreceptors
摘要: Spectrally opponent responses, that is, wavelength-dependent inversions of response polarity, have been observed at the level of photoreceptors in butterflies. As inter-photoreceptor connections have been found in the butterfly Papilio xuthus, and histamine is the only neurotransmitter so far identified in insect photoreceptors, we hypothesize that histaminergic sign-inverting synapses exist in the lamina between different spectral receptors as a mechanism for spectral opponency as in the medulla of Drosophila. Here, we localized two histamine-gated chloride channels, PxHCLA (Drosophila Ort homolog) and PxHCLB (Drosophila HisCl1 homolog), in the visual system of Papilio xuthus by using specific antisera. The antiPxHCLA labeling was associated with the membrane of nonphotoreceptor cells that are postsynaptic to photoreceptors, while the antiPxHCLB labeling overlapped with photoreceptor axons, indicating that PxHCLB is expressed at inter-photoreceptor synapses: PxHCLB is likely involved in producing spectral opponency at the first visual synapses. Color processing in Papilio may appear earlier than previously hypothesized in insect visual systems.
