  • Self-starting mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser using a hybrid structure of no core - graded index multimode fiber as the saturable absorber

    摘要: We experimentally demonstrated a passively mode-locked all-fiber Tm laser using a no-core-graded-index multimode fiber structure as a saturable absorber based on the nonlinear multimode interference. Stable fundamentally mode-locking operation was obtained at a pump threshold of 180 mW. The output soliton pulses had a centre wavelength, spectral width, pulse duration, and repetition rate of 1895.7 nm, 3.3 nm, 1.25 ps, and 18.91 MHz, respectively. This is a simple, low-cost, stable, and convenient laser oscillator, with many potential applications in eye-safe ultrafast photonics.

  • All-fiber polarization interference filter based uniform multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser

    摘要: We demonstrate a compact and stable room-temperature multiwavelength erbium doped fiber laser by employing 45° tilted fiber gratings based on an all-fiber polarization interference filter. Benefiting from the filter, the channel number, linewidth, uniformity and stabilization of the multiwavelength laser are greatly improved. The filter also works as a functional polarizing device in a nonlinear polarization rotation, leading to the multiwavelength operation. Instead of a highly nonlinear fiber, the single mode fiber is used to provide enough linearity and to reduce the splice loss. More than 80 wavelengths (within a 3 dB bandwidth), lasing with a linewidth of 0.03 nm and a signal-to-noise ratio of 33 dB, are obtained. The wavelength spacing of 0.164 nm agrees with the channel spacing of the filter, and can be flexibly controlled by adjusting the length of the filter.

  • Large diameter coreless fiber as a saturable absorber for erbium doped fiber laser cavity based on multimode interference

    摘要: We demonstrated a Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) based on large diameter coreless fiber without intra-cavity tuning element for the first time. A single mode fiber –coreless fiber –single mode fiber (SNCFS) structure was employed as a passive Q-switcher relies on Kerr nonlinearity associated with multi-mode interference (MMI) effect. By splicing 10 cm of 125 μm in diameter coreless fiber (NCF) between two single mode fibers (SMFs), C-band Q-switched EDFL with 3-dB bandwidth of 0.138 nm was successfully obtained, making it a simple, compact and easily handling modulation device. A stable Q-switched pulses were achieved with a pump threshold of 188 mW. Pulse repetition rate ranges from 73.3 to 92.0 kHz, minimum pulse width of 3.5 μs and maximum energy of 50.9 nJ were recorded.

  • Refractive index sensor based on ultrafine tapered single-mode nocladding single-mode fiber structure

    摘要: A refractive index (RI) sensor based on a tapered no cladding fiber (NCF) is proposed theoretically and experimentally. The RI sensor is fabricated by splicing a NCF in the middle of two single mode fibers (SMF), and then the NCF is tapered to get lower waist diameter. Due to the lack of cladding, surrounding refractive index (SRI) can directly affect the light propagation of NCF, and the decrease of diameter can further improve the RI sensitivity by strengthening the evanescent field. The sensitivity with different lengths and waist diameters of NCF is investigated. It is observed that there are different linear relationships in different refractive interval and the RI sensitivity increases obviously with the waist diameter decreasing, especially when it is below 30 μm. RI sensitivity of the sensor reaches 686 nm/RIU when the waist diameter is 13 μm and SRI is at the range of 1.333–1.350. The sensor can be widely used in biosensing for its simple operation and high sensitivity at low SRI.

  • Thin-core fiber-optic biosensor for DNA hybridization detection

    摘要: A real-time label-free DNA biosensor based on thin-core fiber (TCF) interferometer is demonstrated experimentally. The proposed biosensor is constructed by splicing a TCF between two segments of single mode fibers (SMFs) and integrated into a microfluidic channel. By modifying the TCF surface with monolayer poly-l-lysine (PLL) and single-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (ssDNA) probes, the target DNA molecules can be captured in the microfluidic channel. The transmission spectra of the biosensor are measured and theoretically analyzed under different biosensing reaction processes. The results show that the wavelength has a blue-shift with the process of the DNA hybridization. Due to the advantages of low cost, simple operation as well as good detection effect on DNA molecules hybridization, the proposed biosensor has great application prospects in the fields of gene sequencing, medical diagnosis, cancer detection and environmental engineering.

  • Ultrasensitive refractive index sensor based on parallel-connected dual Fabry-Perot interferometers with Vernier effect

    摘要: A kind of ultrasensitive refractive index sensor based on parallel-connected dual Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs) with Vernier effect is proposed and demonstrated. The open and closed cavity FPIs are used as the sensing and reference units, respectively. The Vernier effect is realized by superimposing the reflective comb spectra of the dual FPIs, which have slightly different free spectral ranges. The open groove of the open cavity FPI provides a convenient, efficient and economical method for filling in or draining out the cavity. The stability, repeatability and temperature response of the structures are investigated. Experimental results indicate that the proposed sensing structure features high sensitivity, good stability, quick and accurate measurement.

  • A curvature sensor based on single mode-no-core-twisted single mode fiber structure

    摘要: A high sensitivity curvature sensor based on single mode-no-core-twisted single mode (SNTS) fiber structure is proposed. The configuration is simply formed by twisting a section of single mode fiber (SMF) in the single mode-no-core-single mode structure. Due to the twist is applied, the cladding mode excited in the SMF can be recoupled into the core. The core modes and cladding modes excited in the same fiber form a Mach-Zehnder interference (MZI) which is sensitive to the curvature change. A high sensitivity of 16.28 nm/m?1 with a good linearity has been achieved in the range of 0.96–1.92 m?1, and the repeatability of the curvature sensor is 3.6 × 10?3 nm/m?1. The temperature sensitivity is 0.03 nm/°C within the temperature range from 30 to 100 °C.

  • FFT analysis of surface structures fabricated by laser interference lithography

    摘要: This paper presents an FFT (fast Fourier transform) analytical method for the study of surface structures fabricated by laser interference lithography (LIL). In the work, the FFT analytical method combined with Gaussian fitting is used to determine the periods and pattern distributions of surface structures from frequency spectra. For LIL, the processing parameters of incident and azimuth angles can be obtained corresponding to the period and pattern distribution. This work facilitates the detection of micro- and nano-structures, the analysis of pattern distribution in engineering, and the processing error analysis of LIL.

  • Excimer Laser Induced Spatially Resolved Formation and Implantation of Plasmonic Particles in Glass

    摘要: Metallic nanoparticles are important building blocks for plasmonic applications. The spatially defined arrangement of these nanoparticles in a stable glass matrix is obtained here by nanosecond excimer laser irradiation at 193 nm. Two approaches are addressed: (1) Laser induced formation of particles from a dopant material pre-incorporated in the glass, (2) Particle formation and implantation by irradiation of material pre-coated on top of the glass. Silver nanoparticles are formed inside Ag+ doped glass (method 1). Gold nanoparticles are implanted by irradiation of gold coated glass (method 2). In the latter case, with a few laser pulses the original gold film disintegrates into particles which are then embedded in the softened glass matrix. A micron sized spatial resolution (periodic arrangements with 2 μm period) is obtained in both cases by irradiating the samples with an interference beam pattern generated by a phase mask. The plasmonic absorption of the nanoparticles leads to a contrast of the optical density between irradiated and non-irradiated lines of up to 0.6.

  • Possibilities of Dry and Lubricated Friction Modification Enabled by Different Ultrashort Laser-Based Surface Structuring Methods

    摘要: In this contribution we report on the possibilities of dry and lubricated friction modification introduced by different laser surface texturing methods. We compare the potential of Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures and Laser Beam Interference Ablation on 100Cr6 steel in a linear reciprocating ball-on-disc configuration using 100Cr6 steel and tungsten carbide balls with load forces between 50 mN and 1000 mN. For dry friction, we find a possibility to reduce the coefficient of friction and we observe a pronounced direction dependency for surfaces fabricated by Laser Beam Interference Ablation. Furthermore, Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures result in a load-dependent friction reduction for lubricated linear reciprocating movements. This work helps to identify the modification behaviour of laser generated micro structures with feature sizes of approximately 1 μm and reveals new possibilities for surface engineering
