  • AR Enabled IoT for a Smart and Interactive Environment: A Survey and Future Directions

    摘要: Accompanying the advent of wireless networking and the Internet of Things (IoT), traditional augmented reality (AR) systems to visualize virtual 3D models of the real world are evolving into smart and interactive AR related to the context of things for physical objects. We propose the integration of AR and IoT in a complementary way, making AR scalable to cover objects everywhere with an acceptable level of performance and interacting with IoT in a more intuitive manner. We identify three key components for realizing such a synergistic integration: (1) distributed and object-centric data management (including for AR services); (2) IoT object-guided tracking; (3) seamless interaction and content interoperability. We survey the current state of these respective areas and herein discuss research on issues about realizing a future smart and interactive living environment.

  • Integrated Light Sensing and Communication for LED Lighting

    摘要: Solid state lighting is nowadays widely diffused both in residential and of?ce or industrial environment. Ambient light sensing to modulate lamp power is typical too, but sensors inside a lamp are a challenge, due to the high ?ux of these sources, which easily saturates nearby light detectors. Usually, separate sensing devices must be introduced in the system, thus increasing complexity and cost. In this work, a methodology will be presented, to allow integration of a light sensing device inside a lamp, using low cost circuitry to mitigate interactions between high power light-emitting diode (LED) sources and sensing photodiodes. Moreover, the same circuit allows visual light communication among sources.

  • Mobile Monitoring—Open-Source Based Optical Sensor System for Service-Oriented Turbidity and Dissolved Organic Matter Monitoring

    摘要: The protection and sustainable use of aquatic resources require a better understanding of fresh water sources, limnic ecosystems, and oceans. The effects of global change, intensive use of natural resources and the complex interactions between humans and the environment show different effects at different scales. Current research approaches are not sufficient to appropriately take account of the heterogeneity and dynamics of aquatic ecosystems. A major challenge in applied environmental research is to extend methods for holistic monitoring and long-term observation technologies with enhanced resolution over both space and time. In this study, turbidity and the content of dissolved organic matter (DOM) are key parameters, as they are of importance for assessing the health of aquatic ecosystems and the state of ecosystem services (e.g., the provision of drinking water). Photonics and optical sensors as well as integrated circuits and open-source based components open interesting possibilities to overcome the current lack of adaptive and service-oriented sensor systems. An open source based optical sensor system was developed, which enables a user-specific, modular and adaptive in-situ monitoring of the turbidity and the dissolved organic substance content almost in real time. Quantification is based on attenuation or transmission measurements with two narrowband LEDs and corresponding detectors in the ultraviolet (DOM content) and infrared range (turbidity) of the electromagnetic spectrum. The developed in-situ sensor system shows a very high agreement with the results obtained using a laboratory photometer but with less methodological effort. First tests carried out in the area close to the city of Leipzig (Saxony, Germany) show promising results. The in-situ sensor system is able to acquire the optical attenuation with a sampling rate up to 0.1 Hz. Due to the fact that data is visualized directly with the help of web services, even the quality of data collection can be improved by assisting the selection of sampling points or a direct spatio-temporal data feedback. What this approach illustrates is the fact that open-source technologies and microelectronics can now be used to implement resilient and promising sensor systems that can set new standards in terms of performance and usability within applied environmental research.

  • A Quantum Router For The Entangled Web

    摘要: Qubit transmission protocols are presently point-to-point, and thus restrictive in their functionality. A quantum router is necessary for the quantum Internet to become a reality. We present a quantum router design based on teleportation, as well as mechanisms for entangled pair management. The prototype was validated using a quantum simulator.

    摘要: Photovoltaic power ?uctuation in daytime is one of critical problems for the ef?cient and stable operation of the smart grid. To respond the PV power ?uctuation resulting from weather change, the short-term PV power forecasting algorithm using multi-layer RNN is proposed in this paper. It consists of multiple RNN layers using power and meteorological data which are collected by on-site IoT (Internet of Things) sensors. Experimental results showed that the accuracies of the short-term PV power prediction of 5 minutes and 1 hour later using 3 RNN layers with 12 time-step were 98.02% and 96.58% based on the normalized RMSE, respectively. These experimental results con?rmed that the proposed short-term prediction algorithm using multi-layer RNN model was applicable to respond the short-term PV power ?uctuation.

    摘要: In this paper, we propose a multi-access Internet of Vehicles (IoV) scheme based on multi-band DFTS-OFDM VLC system. The experimental results show that with the bandwidth of 62.5MHz, the dynamic range was enhanced 1.6 dBm employing SVM in hexagonal constellation Geometrically-shaped (GS) 16QAM and the overall capacity is 250Mbps.

    摘要: In this paper, we propose a real-time Internet of Vehicles system based on an automotive headlight. The modulation format is OFDM-64QAM and we successfully reach the data rate of 375Mb/s by utilizing a FPGA as the central host. The transmission distance is 2.5m. We also investigated the performance of the system by calculating BER versus bias current, transmission distance and attenuation at both transmitter and receiver. As far as we know, this is the highest data rate of a real-time visible light communication system based on automotive headlight which can be used in the Internet of Vehicles (IoV).

    摘要: Prognostics and systems health management (PHM) is an enabling discipline that uses sensors to assess the health of systems, diagnoses anomalous behavior, and predicts the remaining useful performance over the life of the asset. The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) enables PHM to be applied to all types of assets across all sectors, thereby creating a paradigm shift that is opening up significant new business opportunities. This paper introduces the concepts of PHM and discusses the opportunities provided by the IoT. Developments are illustrated with examples of innovations from manufacturing, consumer products, and infrastructure. From this review, a number of challenges that result from the rapid adoption of IoT-based PHM are identified. These include appropriate analytics, security, IoT platforms, sensor energy harvesting, IoT business models, and licensing approaches.

  • Light Extraction Efficiency of GaN-Based Micro-Scale Light-Emitting Diodes Investigated Using Finite-Difference Time-Domain Simulation

    摘要: The lack of good and up-to-date lab experiments form a major impediment in the domain of engineering education. Often, the lab experiments are outdated. The Virtual Labs project addresses the issue of lack of good lab facilities, as well as trained teachers, by making remote experimentation possible. The pedagogy is student-centric. The Virtual Labs project has also developed a novel methodology for ?eld trials, outreach, and quality control. Virtual Labs also provide tremendous cost advantage. The Virtual Labs project is a wonderful example of an open educational resource developed by a multiinstitution multidiscipline project team. Over 100 000 students are currently using the online labs under the Virtual Labs project. Many of these labs are being accessed outside the regular lab hours.

  • Analysis of Photovoltaic String Failure and Health Monitoring with Module Fault Identification

    摘要: In this paper, photovoltaic (PV) string failure analysis and health monitoring of PV modules based on a low-cost self-powered wireless sensor network (WSN) are presented. Simple and effective fault detection and diagnosis method based on the real-time operating voltage of PV modules is proposed. The proposed method is verified using the developed health monitoring system which is installed in a grid-connected PV system. Each of the PV modules is monitored via WSN to detect any individual faulty module. The analysis of PV string failure includes several electrical fault scenarios and their impact on the PV string characteristics. The results show that a degraded or faulty module exhibits low operating voltage as compared to the normal module. The developed health monitoring system also includes a graphical user interface (GUI) program which graphically displays the real-time operating voltage of each module with colors and thus helping users to identify the faulty modules easily. The faulty modules identification approach is further validated using the PV module electroluminescence (EL) imaging system.
