  • Low-Voltage, Full-Swing InGaZnO-Based Inverters Enabled by Solution-Processed, Ultra-Thin AlxOy

    摘要: High-performance, full-swing inverters implemented with InGaZnO thin-film transistors (TFTs) have been demonstrated capable of operating at a very low voltage. The threshold voltage of the load and drive TFTs were modified through careful change of the gate dielectric anodization voltage. Both the load and drive TFTs show excellent electrical properties including a current on/off ratio > 106 and a subthreshold swing close to the theoretical limit. As a result, the inverters show high voltage gains up to 34 at a supply voltage of only 1 V as well as high noise margins > 92% of the theoretical maximum. The devices and the fabrication process might have potential applications in future wearable and disposable electronics where low cost and low power are vital.

    摘要: This paper provides experimental results of a utility-scale (500 kW) solar PV inverter during simulated grid disturbances. This device was tested using simulations of system voltage during simulated distribution and transmission faults, and voltage records that were collected during the Blue Cut Fire Event. The methods used for testing the three different scenarios of grid disturbances are detailed and the test setup is described. Additionally, the test results for each of the grid events are provided and an analysis of the test results is given. The test results show that the tested PV inverter's response to grid disturbances depends in part on the fault-induced phase shift and harmonic content of the system voltage. These factors can impact the inverters ability to accurately calculate system frequency and can cause erroneous tripping on miscalculated frequency. The information provided in this paper can inform utilities, manufacturers, developers, and system planners of the potential performance of solar PV inverters during grid events.

  • Bi-Level Volt-VAR Optimization to Coordinate Smart Inverters with Voltage Control Devices

    摘要: Conservation voltage reduction (CVR) uses Volt-VAR optimization (VVO) methods to reduce customer power demand by controlling feeder's voltage control devices. The objective of this paper is to present a VVO approach that controls system's legacy voltage control devices and coordinates their operation with smart inverter control. An optimal power flow (OPF) formulation is proposed by developing linear and nonlinear power flow approximations for a three-phase unbalanced electric power distribution system. A bi-level VVO approach is proposed where, Level-1 optimizes the control of legacy devices and smart inverters using a linear approximate three-phase power flow. In Level-2, the control parameters for smart inverters are adjusted to obtain an optimal and feasible solution by solving the approximate nonlinear OPF model. Level-1 is modeled as a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) while Level-2 as a Nonlinear Program (NLP) with linear objective and quadratic constraints. The proposed approach is validated using 13-bus and 123-bus three-phase IEEE test feeders and a 329-bus three-phase PNNL taxonomy feeder. The results demonstrate the applicability of the framework in achieving the CVR objective. It is demonstrated that the proposed coordinated control approach help reduce feeder's power demand by reducing the bus voltages; the proposed approach maintains an average feeder voltage of 0.96 pu. A higher energy saving is reported during the minimum load conditions. The results and approximation steps are thoroughly validated using OpenDSS.

The voltage source and current source inverters, stand-alone and grid-connected inverters and, square, modified square and sine wave inverters come under the classification. An open loop strategy is considered for the MATLAB Simulation of the three main types of PWM inverters available in the market. A brief description of PV array, charge controller and battery is also presented in this paper.

  • Simultaneous Fast Frequency Control and Power Oscillation Damping by Utilizing PV Solar System as PV-STATCOM

    摘要: This paper presents a novel fast frequency response and power oscillation damping control by large-scale PV plants controlled as STATCOM, termed PV-STATCOM, to simultaneously enhance frequency regulation and small signal stability of power systems. Frequency deviations typically occur together with power oscillations in large power systems. The proposed controller comprises: i) Power Oscillation Damping (POD) controller based on reactive power modulation; and ii) Fast Frequency Response (FFR) controller based on real power modulation, both of which are applied to the plant level controller of PV-STATCOMs. The proposed composite control is shown to successfully reduce frequency deviations, damp power oscillations and provide voltage regulation both during over-frequency and under-frequency events. The proposed smart inverter control makes effective utilization of the PV inverter capacity and available solar power. For large power flows, the proposed control is shown to be superior than the conventional droop control recommended by North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) for generating plants. Matlab/Simulink based simulations are conducted on two-area power system using generic PV plant dynamic models developed by Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), for a wide range of system operating conditions. Such grid support functionality is expected to bring new revenue making opportunities for PV solar farms.

  • Contribution to the System Design of Contactless Energy Transfer Systems

    摘要: In this contribution, a design procedure that is applicable to many kinds of wireless or contactless energy transfer systems is proposed. The design procedure is limited to near field wireless energy transfer systems in resonant operation. For this purpose, the input impedance and voltage transfer function of different natural frequencies are calculated analytically, and moreover, the behavior of the system is described. Following three issues lead to a readily applicable design procedure. First, the knowledge of the transfer functions. Secondly, the knowledge of basic magnetic properties and lastly, the known influence of harmonics according to rectifier and inverter. This design procedure is demonstrated with two hardware setups.

    摘要: The paper presents a solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station designed for green energy utilization. The system integrates photovoltaic (PV) panels, DC-DC power converters, and inverters to convert solar energy into usable power for EVs. A simulation model is developed to analyze the charging process, energy efficiency, and grid interaction. Results show that the system can effectively charge multiple EVs with minimal grid dependency, promoting sustainable transportation. The design includes calculations for voltage, current, and power ratings, validated through simulation comparisons.

    摘要: With the rising popularity of photovoltaic (PV) power, utility companies are experiencing a growing number of interconnection requests on their networks. Combined with power quality issues, the distribution system operator (DSO) must go through strenuous impact studies before proceeding to the installation of PV systems. To address this issue, this work proposes a tool to rapidly and accurately compute the total PV hosting capacity (PVHC) of their network. Moreover, the proposed tool allows the implementation of user-defined control strategies in order to assess their beneficial effects with respect to the PVHC. In this prospect, we investigated the impact of smart PV inverters. We implemented this tool as a plugin for PowerFactory and tested it on the CIGRE benchmark distribution grid. First, we determined the PVHC with inverters injecting at unity power factor, then we estimated the gains brought by smart inverter control (SIC). The latter increased the hosting capacity by up to 19.7 %.

As a result, their ef?ciency, output power and power output capability can be higher in some cases than the Class E inverter. Little is known about these inverters and no attempt has been made to provide an in depth analysis on their performance. The design equations that have been previously derived are limited and are only applicable under certain assumptions. This paper is the ?rst to provide a comprehensive set of analytical analysis of Class EF and Class E/F inverters. The Class EF2 inverter is then studied in further detail and three special operation cases are de?ned that allow it to either operate at maximum power-output capability, maximum switching frequency, or maximum output power. Final design equations are provided to allow for rapid design and development. Experimental results are provided to con?rm the accuracy of the performed analysis based on a 23-W Class EF2 inverter at 6.78-MHz and 8.60-MHz switching frequencies. The results also show that the Class EF2 inverter achieved an ef?ciency of 91% compared to a 88% ef?ciency when operated as a Class E inverter.
