  • Nonlinear compression of high-power laser pulses: compression after compressor approach

    摘要: The peak power of present-day lasers is limited by the pulse energy that the diffraction gratings of an optical compressor can withstand. A promising method to overcome this limitation is reviewed: the pulse power is increased by shortening its duration rather than increasing the pulse energy, the pulse being shortened after passing a compressor (Compression after Compressor Approach (CafCA)). For this purpose, the pulse spectrum is broadened as a result of self-phase modulation, and the pulse is then compressed by dispersion mirrors. Application of this idea, known since the 1960s, to lasers whose power is over 1 TW has been restrained until recently by a number of physical problems. These problems and possible methods to solve them are discussed in detail. The experimental results obtained over the past few years demonstrate the efficiency of the technique (compression by a factor of 5) in the range up to 250 TW. CafCA features three undisputed merits: simplicity and low cost, negligible loss of pulse energy, and applicability to any high-power laser.

  • Stability of out-of-phase solitons and laser pulse self-compression in active multicore fibers

    摘要: An out-of-phase soliton distribution of the wave ?eld is found for a multicore ?ber (MCF) from an even number of cores located in a ring. Its stability is proved with respect both to small wave-?eld perturbations, including azimuthal ones, and to small deformations of the MCF structure. As an example of using this soliton distribution, the problem of laser pulse compression in an active MCF is studied. The optimal ?ber parameters, the minimum duration of the output pulse, and the compression length are found, and they are in good agreement with the results of numerical simulation. In order to achieve high energies in the output laser pulse, the requirements for MCF deformations are determined.

  • SRS converter – compressor of femtosecond ytterbium laser pulses

    摘要: Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) conversion of femtosecond pulses of an ytterbium laser at a wavelength of 1.03 mm is performed in compressed hydrogen under conditions of nonlinear phase modulation. Temporal compression of frequency-chirped Stokes pulses is carried out, as a result of which 400-fs laser pulses are converted into 27-fs Stokes pulses with a wavelength of 1.8 mm. An average Stokes power of 0.6 W is implemented at an average laser power of 6.3 W and a pulse repetition rate of 20 kHz.
