  • Synthesis and Properties of Novel Thiophene-Based Liquid Crystalline Conducting Polymers

    摘要: Side-chain liquid crystalline polythiophenes were synthesised and the effects of the mesogenic units on the structure and electronic properties of the polymers were studied. The liquid crystal properties of the polymer films were studied using polarised hot-stage optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffractometry was used to investigate the effect of a magnetic field on the monomers and polymers.

  • Standardization of <sup>147</sup>Pm by TDCR Liquid Scintillation Counting using Printed Optical Filters; 印刷光学フィルタを用いたTDCR液体シンチレーション計数による<sup>147</sup>Pmの放射能絶対測定;

    摘要: The Optical filter method is one of methods to vary the counting efficiency for TDCR (Triple to Double Coincidence) measurement. A method for the fabrication of optical filters for 147Pm standardization was developed using printed plastic film. Toner was printed on a piece of plastic film using the laser printer. The toner color was graduated in steps by a draw software. The counting efficiency was varied according to the amount of scintillation light absorption. The specific activity of 147PmCl3 solution was successfully measured using the printed optical filters.

  • Light-Induced Shape Morphing of Liquid Metal Nanodroplets Enabled by Polydopamine Coating

    摘要: Shape morphing nanosystems have recently attracted much attention and a number of applications are developed, spanning from autonomous robotics to drug delivery. However, the fabrication of such nanosystems remains at an early stage owing to limited choices of strategies and materials. This work reports a facile method to fabricate liquid metal (LM) nanodroplets by sonication of bulk LM in an aqueous dopamine hydrochloride solution and their application in light-induced shape morphing at the nanoscale. In this method, dopamine acts as a surfactant, which stabilizes the LM nanodroplets dispersion during the sonication, and results in downsizing of the nanodroplets. Furthermore, by adding 2-amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol to the suspension, self-polymerization of dopamine molecules occurs, resulting in the formation of polydopamine (PDA)-coated LM nanodroplets. Owing to the high photothermal conversion of the PDA, PDA-coated LM nanodroplets are transformed from spherical shapes to ellipsoids by NIR laser irradiation. This study paves a simple and reliable pathway for the preparation of functional LM nanodroplets and their application as shape-morphing nanosystems.

  • Simple, Rapid, and Sensitive Determination of Thiols by Liquid Chromatography with Fluorescence Detection

    摘要: Thiol compounds are important for protecting cells from oxidative stress. One common method of quantifying thiols is liquid chromatographic separation with fluorescence detection of their derivatives. The pH and the concentration of tris (2-carboxyethyl) phosphine hydrochloride in the reaction medium were shown to have significant effects on the fluorescence intensity of five thiol compounds: cysteine, glutathione, and three phytochelatins. The optimal pH range for derivatization, as indicated by the maximum fluorescence intensities, was 7.75–8.0 for all of the evaluated thiols. The thiol derivative fluorescence increased and then decreased with the tris (2-carboxyethyl) phosphine hydrochloride concentration. In particular, the fluorescence intensities of all of the derivatives decreased by 96.5–99.9% when tris (2-carboxyethyl) phosphine hydrochloride levels were increased from 0.1 to 1 mmol L?1. We attributed these changes to preferential interactions between tris (2-carboxyethyl) phosphine hydrochloride and the thiol-specific fluorophore, monobromobimane. We describe herein a method, based on our optimized solution pH and tris (2-carboxyethyl) phosphine hydrochloride concentration, that is rapid (12 min) and boasts excellent recovery (91.3–102%), sensitivity (limit of detections, 17.8–75.2 pmol L?1) and precision (relative standard deviation values ≤1.03%) for the quantification of these thiol compounds in microalgal samples.

  • Initial evaluation of proportional scintillation in liquid Xenon for direct dark matter detection

    摘要: The Liquid Xenon Time Projection Chamber (LXeTPC) is often seen as an ideal detector for the direct Dark Matter (DM) search. In such experiments an efficient γ-ray background discrimination is essential. This can be achieved by distinguishing the ionization density, different for γ-rays and Nuclear Recoils. Two quantities are used for this measurement, the direct scintillation light generated by the ionizing event, and the free charges swept away by an electric field before recombination occurs. Present LXe detectors apply the Dual Phase principle, i.e. the charges are extracted into the gas phase and are measured by the proportional light they produce in a strong electric field in the gas. With ever growing dimensions of the detectors it is difficult to meet the tight mechanical tolerances required. Proportional scintillation also occurs in the liquid phase, although at much higher field strengths. Such field strengths can be reached in the 1/r field close to thin wires. All the limitations due to the extraction of electrons into the gas phase are avoided. Since the liquid level has not to be crossed, the design of the detector becomes simpler with many advantages over Dual Phase detectors. Our initial tests clearly show the pulses. They are much shorter, and their length is limited by longitudinal diffusion of the drifting charges. The threshold for proportional light production seems significantly lower, and estimates of the gain are more favorable than previously predicted. We attribute these discrepancies to our improved liquid purity.

    摘要: Ferrofluidic actuation of liquid metal, demonstrated for the first time on an RF device, employs the magnetic response of a low-loss hydrocarbon-based ferrofluid for a simple RF switch. The ferrofluid is shown to reduce losses by an average of 4.9 dB from 50 MHz to 20 GHz compared to a lossy aqueous solution commonly used in existing actuation methods for liquid metal. These results offer a promising alternative for liquid-metal reconfigurable RF circuits.

  • Interfacial Tensions and Viscosities in Multiphase Systems by Surface Light Scattering (SLS)

    摘要: Hypothesis Multiphase systems are relevant in many fields of process engineering. For process and product design in connection with multiphase systems, knowledge on the thermophysical properties of the individual phases such as viscosity and on the interfacial tension between these is required but often lacking in literature. Experiments In the present study, the applicability of surface light scattering (SLS) for the simultaneous measurement of interfacial tensions and viscosities in multiphase systems in macroscopic thermodynamic equilibrium is demonstrated. For two model systems consisting of n-decane and methanol as well as n-dodecane and methanol forming a vapor-liquid-liquid equilibrium at atmospheric pressure, surface fluctuations which show an oscillatory behavior at the vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid interface could be associated with hydrodynamic modes. Findings From an exact theoretical description of the dynamics of the surface fluctuations, absolute data for the dynamic viscosities of the two liquid phases as well as the vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid interfacial tensions could be determined at temperatures between (333 and 358) K with total measurement uncertainties (k = 2) down to about 2%. For both systems studied at temperatures close to the upper critical solution temperature, the viscosities of the two liquid phases approach each other and the liquid-liquid interfacial tension tends to zero.

  • Preparation, structure and optical properties of thermochromic liquid crystal compounds containing (?)-menthyl with selective reflection

    摘要: A series of new chiral liquid crystal compounds named MOPnB containing (?)-menthyl group has been prepared and characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR spectra. The thermal properties and optical textures were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Increasing the length of the terminal alkoxy group tended to decrease the clearing points and narrow the temperature range of the N* phase as well as favored the development of SmC* phase. Furthermore, Bragg selective reflection spectra of the compounds were measured by ultraviolet/visible spectrometer (UV/Vis). All compounds MOPnB (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) revealed the thermochromic property or selective reflection of visible light in the N* phase. Additionally, only MOP10B and MOP12B in the SmC* phase had the thermochromic phenomena and gave red-saffron color.

  • Polarity Control in Growing Highly Ga-doped ZnO Nanowires with Vapor-liquid-solid Process

    摘要: Surface behavior modification by forming surface transparent conductive nanowires (NWs) is an important technique for many applications, particularly when the polarities of the NWs can be controlled. The polarities of Ga-doped ZnO (GaZnO) NWs grown on templates of different polarities under different growth conditions are studied for exploring a polarity control growth technique. The NWs are formed on Ga- and N-face GaN through the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) process using Ag nanoparticles as growth catalyst. The NWs grown on templates of different polarities under the Zn- (O-) rich condition are always Zn (O) polar. During the early stage of NW growth, because the lattice sizes among different nucleation islands formed at the triple-phase line are quite different, high-density planar defects are produced when lateral growths from multiple nucleation islands form a GaZnO double-bilayer. In this situation, frequent domain inversions occur and GaZnO polarity is unstable. Under the Zn- (O-) rich condition, because the lateral growth rate of GaZnO in the Zn- (O-) polar structure is higher due to more available dangling bonds, the growth of Zn- (O-) polar structure dominates NW formation such that the NW eventually becomes Zn (O) polar irrespective of the polarity of growth template. Therefore, the polarity of a doped-ZnO NW can be controlled simply by the relative supply rates of Zn and O during VLS growth.

  • Influence of Structure Modification of Silicon Carbide Materials on Their Dynamic Properties

    摘要: SiC ceramic materials were prepared both by reactive and liquid-phase sintering. Structure was modified during preparation by introducing reinforcing SiC-filaments and by synthesizing grains self-reinforcing the structure. The armor-protection capacity was determined by estimating the bullet penetration delay time.
