  • Design and characterization of small detection modules based on scintillators and WLS bars with SiPM readout for a cosmic ray mini-array

    摘要: This paper describes the design and characterization tests of detection modules for a low-cost, easily reconfigurable mini-array for cosmic rays. The basic layout of each individual module is based on a 400 cm2 scintillator tile, optically coupled to a Wavelength Shifter (WLS) bar and a Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) for light collection and readout. Low cost solutions, based on the Arduino MEGA board, have been adopted for electronics, triggering and data acquisition, in view of the operation of this facility. The first detection modules, equipped with 4×4 mm2 SiPMs were fully built and characterized. Additional tests were also carried out with photosensors having different sensitive area and technology.

  • Paintable Room Temperature Phosphorescent Liquid Formulations of Alkylated Bromonaphthalimide

    摘要: Organic phosphors have been widely explored with an understanding that crystalline molecular ordering is a requisite for enhanced intersystem crossing. In this context, we explore the room temperature phosphorescence features of a solvent-free organic liquid phosphor in air. Given alkyl chain substitution varied the physical states of bromonaphthalimides, phosphorescence remained unaltered for the solvent-free liquid in air. As the first report, a solvent-free liquid of a long swallow tailed bromonaphthalimide exhibits room temperature phosphorescence in air. Doping of the phosphor with carbonyl guests resulted in enhanced phosphorescence and hence a large area paintable phosphorescent liquid composite with improved lifetime and quantum yield is developed.

  • A Novel Phytantriol-Based Lyotropic Liquid Crystalline Gel for Efficient Ophthalmic Delivery of Pilocarpine Nitrate

    摘要: The purpose of this paper was to investigate the potential of liquid crystalline (LC) gels for ophthalmic delivery, so as to enhance the bioavailability of pilocarpine nitrate (PN). The gels were prepared by a vortex method using phytantriol and water (in the ratio of 73:27 w/w). Their inner structures were con?rmed by crossed polarized light microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, attenuated total re?ectance-Fourier transform infrared spectrum, and rheology. The in vitro release studies revealed that PN could keep sustained release from the gels over a period of 12 h. The ex vivo apparent permeability coef?cient of the gels demonstrated a 3.83-folds (P < 0.05) increase compared with that of eye drops. The corneal hydration levels of the gel maintained in the normal range of 79.46 ± 2.82%, hinting that the gel could be considered non-damaging and safe to the eyes. Furthermore, in vivo residence time evaluation suggested that a better retention performance of LC gel was observed in rabbit’s eyes compared to eye drops. In vivo ocular irritation study indicated that LC gel was nonirritant and might be suitable for various eye applications. In conclusion, LC gels might represent a potential ophthalmic delivery strategy to overcome the limitations of eye drops.

  • Sol–Gel Spin-Coating Followed by Solvothermal Synthesis of Nanorods-Based ZnO Thin Films: Microstructural, Optical, and Gas Sensing Properties

    摘要: Zinc oxide thin films with nanorod morphology were investigated for microstructural and optical properties as well as their performance as a liquid petroleum gas sensing material. A two-step synthesis procedure consisting of sol–gel spin-coating and solvothermal methods was employed where several factors such as rational utilization of metal precursors, solvent, stabilizing, and structure directing agents, a repetitive drying-coating process, as well as post-thermal annealing were found influential to obtain qualified nanorods and a final homogeneous thin film. Compositional and optical investigations were pursued to characterize features, namely morphology, poly crystallinity, porous structure, nanocrystallite size, lattice oriented growth, textural atomic ratio, lattice purity and transparency, phonon and exciton transitions, as well as the formed structural defects via field-emission scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive x-ray, UV–Vis spectroscopy, Raman, and photoluminescence techniques. The as-prepared thin film was then used as an active LPG sensing material via a home-made gas sensor where the control sensing parameters were chamber testing temperature and gas concentration. Results showed a quantitative response of 92.7% as sensor sensitivity at an operation temperature of 250°C and a LPG concentration of 800 ppm in addition to fast response and recovery times of 44.1 s and 218.7 s, respectively.

  • Superior photocatalytic activity of tungsten disulfide nanostructures: role of morphology and defects

    摘要: Tungsten disulphide (WS2) nanostructures, WS2 nanosheets (WNS) and WS2 nanorods (WNR), were synthesized by varying the surfactant, N-cetyl-N,N,N-trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), concentration using facile hydrothermal technique. Samples were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) for morphology, X-ray diffraction (XRD) to confirm their phase and crystal structure, photoluminescence (PL) and Raman studies for the determination of defect density, Tauc plot for the determination of band gap, Fourier transform infra red (FTIR) spectroscopy for functional groups and bonds, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) isotherms for the determination of pore size and surface area. A comparative study using WS2 nanostructures (WNS and WNR) was conducted to observe the photocatalytic degradation efficiency (?) and degradation kinetics on methylene blue (MB) and 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). The superior photocatalytic performance of WNS over WNR is attributed to enhanced pore size and reduced defect density. High-performance liquid chromatography was carried out for the determination of intermediate products during photocatalytic degradation.

  • Construction of liquid crystal-based sensing platform for sensitive and selective detection of L-phenylalanine based on alkaline phosphatase

    摘要: The detection of L-phenylalanine (L-Phe) has become one of most pressing issues concerning diagnosis and treatment of phenylketonuria in neonates, yet a simple and robust methodology has yet to be developed. Here the application of novel liquid crystals (LCs) sensing platform for sensitive, selective, and label-free detection of L-Phe was reported at the first time. We devised a strategy to fabricate the sodium monododecyl phosphate (SMP) decorated LC sensing platform with the appearance of dark. Then, a dark to bright (D-B) optical images alteration of LCs was observed after transferring alkaline phosphatase (ALP) to the interface, owing to cleavage of SMP induced by ALP. LCs remained dark images after the SMP-decorated interface in contact with the pre-incubated ALP and L-Phe. Such optical appearance resulted from the inhibition of ALP by L-Phe, which was further verified by the isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). The strategy was applied to sensing L-Phe, which have been proven to allow for sensitively and selectively differentiation of L-Phe from interfering compounds with similar aromatic groups, as well as seven other essential amino acids. More importantly, the detection limit of L-Phe reached 1 pg/mL in urine samples, further demonstrated its value in the practical applications. Results obtained in this study clearly demonstrated the superiority of LCs towards the L-Phe detection, which can pave a way for the development of high performance and robust probes for L-Phe detection in clinical applications.

  • Phase-dependent photoluminescence of non-symmetric 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole liquid crystals

    摘要: In order to understand the effect of disubstitution on calamitic liquid crystals, a series of non-symmetric 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole compounds were synthesized and characterized. These specific molecular architectures without the C2 axis were prepared to investigate their mesomorphism and physical properties and to compare them with symmetric molecules. Their liquid crystalline behavior was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The thermal properties evidenced the influence of non-symmetric design on the formation of liquid crystalline phases. Photophysical studies were performed in solution and with films, where these materials displayed intense photoluminescence between 500–650 nm, high quantum yields (ΦF = 0.62 – 0.96) and strong solvatochromism. Photoluminescence was measured as a function of temperature, displaying a strong dependence on the phase.

  • Optically switchable bistable guest–host displays in chiral-azobenzene- and dichroic-dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystals

    摘要: Optically switchable bistable guest–host displays in chiral-azobenzene- and dichroic-dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystals (CA-DD-CLCs) are demonstrated. The CA-DD-CLCs in a LC cell treated by homeotropic alignment are initially in stable unwound textures. Given that all LC molecules in unwound textures are oriented perpendicularly to the substrates, the light absorbed by the doped DDs reaches the minimum value, which is considered the transparent state of the proposed CA-DD-CLCs. The CA-DD-CLCs are switched to fingerprint (FP) textures by illumination with ultraviolet (UV) light and can be switched back to unwound textures by illumination with green light. The optical switching between unwound and FP textures is based on the photo-tunable chirality of the doped CA via photoisomerization effect. The light absorbed by the doped DDs in FP textures reaches the maximum value, which is considered the dark state of the CA-DD-CLCs. Moreover, the performances of light absorption from the doped DDs when the CA-DD-CLCs are in unwound and FP textures is independent of the polarization of the incident light. Pattern information can be optically addressed (erased) in CA-DD-CLC cells by illumination with UV (green) light through a suitable photomask. The CA-DD-CLCs can be stabilized in FP textures for several tens of minutes in the dark environment. As such, the power is consumed only for the illumination of specific lights during the switching of CA-DD-CLCs between unwound and FP textures. Moreover, a transparent active matrix organic light-emitting diode (LED) display that is superimposed on top of a CA-DD-CLC cell embedded with a transparent light-guide film with suitable LED light sources for optical switching between unwound and FP textures, is proposed for augmented reality applications.
