  • Corona assisted gallium oxide nanowire growth on silicon carbide

    摘要: This article reports on the use of corona discharge to assist the vapor liquid solid growth of gallium oxide nanowires on silicon carbide substrates. The corona discharge increases the nucleation efficiency of the gold catalysts from 60 % to 98 % for 3C-SiC(111)/Si(111) Si-face substrates and from 15 % to 80 % for 6H-SiC(0001) substrates. The growth mode and crystal structure are not affected by the corona discharge. The gallium oxide growth starts with the formation of [-311] oriented laterally overgrown terrace like nucleation zones with the gold catalyst particles floating on top. With evolving process time, the growth proceeds in the faster [010] direction, resulting in nanowires with an inclination angle of 51° towards the substrate surface. On silicon and sapphire substrates, the nucleation and growth of gallium oxide nanowires are suppressed.

  • Enhancement of flexoelastic ratio of nematic liquid crystal doped with hydrogen-bonded bimesogen molecules

    摘要: We synthesized a new liquid crystal (LC) dopant 4-[7-(4′-Cyanobiphenyl-4-yl)hexyloxy]bezoic acid (CBO7OBA) which can form dimers by hydrogen-bonding. We mixed the hydrogen-bondable CBO7OBA dopants with commercial nematic liquid crystal (NLC) mixtures and investigated the change of the flexoelastic ratio of the mixture. The flexoelastic ratio of the CBO7OBA-doped NLC mixture was increased up to 4.7 C/Nm, while that of the pure NLC was 2.0 C/Nm at room temperature. The greater flexoelastic ratio of the CBO7OBA-doped NLC mixture is thought to be due to the bent-shape and the large dipole moment of the CBO7OBA molecules.

  • Plasmoelectronic-Based Ultrasensitive Assay of Tumor Suppressor microRNAs Directly in Patient Plasma: Design of Highly Specific Early Cancer Diagnostic Technology

    摘要: It is becoming understood that microRNAs hold great promise for non-invasive liquid biopsies for screening for different types of cancer, but current state-of-the-art RT-PCR and microarray techniques have sensitivity limitations that currently restrict their use. Herein, we report a new transduction mechanism involving delocalization of photoexcited conduction electrons wavefunction of gold triangular nanoprism (Au TNP) in the presence of -ssDNA/microRNA duplexes. This plasmoelectronic effect increases the electronic dimension of Au TNPs and substantially affects their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties that together allow us to achieve a sensitivity for microRNA assay as low as 140 zeptomolar concentrations for our nanoplasmonic sensors. We show that the position of a single base-pair mismatch in the -ssDNA/microRNA duplex dramatically alters the LSPR properties and detection sensitivity. The unprecedentedly high sensitivity of nanoplasmonic sensors has allowed us to assay four different microRNAs (microRNA-10b, -182, -143 and -145) from bladder cancer patient plasma (50 μL/sample). For the first time, we demonstrate the utility of a label-free, nanoplasmonic sensor in quantification of tumor suppressor microRNAs - the level of tumor suppressor microRNAs goes down in cancer patient as compared to normal healthy individuals - in metastatic and non-metastatic bladder cancer patient plasma. Our statistical analysis of patient samples unequivocally suggests that the tumor suppressor microRNAs are more specific biomarkers (p-value of <0.0001) than oncogenic microRNAs for differentiation between metastatic and non-metastatic bladder cancer, and non-metastatic cancer from healthy individuals. This work demonstrating the electron wavefunctions delocalization dependent ultrasensitive LSPR properties of noble metal nanoparticles has a great potential for fabrication of miniaturized and extremely powerful sensors to investigate microRNA properties in other cancers (for example breast, lung, and pancreatic) through liquid biopsy.

  • Zirconia Nanocolloids Having a Nanospace of Poly(cyclodextrin): Preparation and Application to Liquid Crystal Devices

    摘要: Poly(β-cyclodextrin) (PβCyD)-protected ZrO2 nanocolloids were prepared by using a microwave reactor equipped with ultrasonic nozzle mixing at 240 °C for 30 min in a tetraethylene glycol solution of zirconium (IV) ethoxide in the presence of poly(β-cyclodextrin). Particles in PβCyD-protected ZrO2 nanocolloids have an average diameter of 7.2 nm and mainly distribute within the range of about 3 to 10 nm. The nanocolloids were dispersed in 4'-pentylbiphenyl-4-carbonitrile (5CB) and practical liquid crystal to construct novel twisted nematic liquid crystal devices (TN-LCDs). The response time of this TN-LCDs in the presence of PβCyD-protected ZrO2 nanocolloids was faster than that in the absence. The threshold voltage of TN-LCDs by doping PβCyD-protected ZrO2 nanocolloids decreased. The decrease of threshold voltage can reduce power consumption, which may meet the demands of future power-saving LCDs.

  • Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor Based at Metallic Sphere Dimer Particle

    摘要: By the cooling holes in aero-engine turbine blade as the research object, this study focuses on two kinds of electrochemical machining(ECM) methods, which are mix gas added to the nonlinear electrolyte (NaNO3) and non-mixed gas. Mixed and non-mixed gas ECM experiments of turbine blade cooling holes were carried out respectively. The corresponding two-dimensional CAD model of cooling hole was constructed combined with the experimental data and theoretical analysis. Numerical simulation analysis was carried out of the flow field base on the above models by using the fluid dynamics analysis software FLUENT. The influence flow velocity and flow velocity distribution on the machining accuracy and efficiency of ECM were investigated in detail. The vortex zone distribution of gas-NaNO3 mixed phase flow field and single NaNO3 solution flow field was analyzed qualitatively. The simulation results indicated that the flow velocity in the machining gap with mixed gas was significantly higher than the velocity during ECM process for cooling holes. The electrolytic products and heat were washed away completely, the electrolyte can be updated in time. Fluid vortex zone distribution was improved obviously, the flow field distribution became more uniform after mixed gas in ECM process. The machining accuracy and efficiency for cooling holes making may be improved greatly with gas mixed in electrolyte NaNO3.

    摘要: Color vision deficiency (CVD), also known as color blindness, is commonly caused by genetic disorder. Unfortunately, as of 2018, there is not yet a cure for the condition. Contact lenses and glasses with color filter are possible solutions to CVD by applying uniform changes to user’s field of view (FoV). On the other hand, optical see-through head-mounted display (OST-HMD) can provide a controllable overlay to user’s FoV, which could help for making a better solution. To calibrate colors in FoV of a user with CVD, methods that often used, such as the daltonization process, need light reduce feature, which makes calibrated color darker. However, recent commercially available OST-HMDs don’t have a controllable way to decrease the brightness of incoming light. In this paper, we present an approach for light subtraction of OST-HMD using a transmissive LCD panel. A prototype system for achieving a controllable overlay to user’s FoV with OST-HMD by using scene camera, user-perspective camera, and the transmissive LCD panel was implemented.

  • A UV-Responsive Multifunctional Photoelectric Device Based on Discotic Columnar Nanostructures and Molecular Motors

    摘要: Orientation control of ordered materials would not only produce new physical phenomenon but also facilitate the development of fancy devices. Discotic liquid crystals (DLCs) form 1D charge transport pathway by self-organizing into columnar nanostructures via π–π stacking. However, controlling the electrical properties in such nanostructures with some direct and instant way is a formidable task for their high viscosity and insensitivity to external stimuli. Herein, the arbitrary control over electrical conductivity of such columnar nanostructures is achieved with UV light by incorporating DLCs with molecular motors. Highly ordered DLC microstripe arrays are generated on desired substrate through a capillary bridge dewetting strategy. The conductivity of the microstripes could be continuously modulated by 365 nm light due to the influence of molecular motion under UV irradiation on the electron orbital overlap of columnar nanostructures. This is so because the disorder degree of the DLC molecules is associated with the intensity of UV light and the doping concentration of molecular motors. Moreover, the device shows memory effect and reversible conductivity change. The DLC microstripe arrays are very promising for the applications in UV detectors, memory devices, optical switches, and so on.

  • Green method by diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy and spectral region selection for the quantification of sulphamethoxazole and trimethoprim in pharmaceutical formulations

    摘要: An alternative method for the quantification of sulphametoxazole (SMZ) and trimethoprim (TMP) using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and partial least square regression (PLS) was developed. Interval Partial Least Square (iPLS) and Synergy Partial Least Square (siPLS) were applied to select a spectral range that provided the lowest prediction error in comparison to the full-spectrum model. Fifteen commercial tablet formulations and forty-nine synthetic samples were used. The ranges of concentration considered were 400 to 900 mg g-1 SMZ and 80 to 240 mg g-1 TMP. Spectral data were recorded between 600 and 4000 cm-1 with a 4 cm-1 resolution by Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The proposed procedure was compared to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results obtained from the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP), during the validation of the models for samples of sulphamethoxazole (SMZ) and trimethoprim (TMP) using siPLS, demonstrate that this approach is a valid technique for use in quantitative analysis of pharmaceutical formulations. The selected interval algorithm allowed building regression models with minor errors when compared to the full spectrum PLS model. A RMSEP of 13.03 mg g-1 for SMZ and 4.88 mg g-1 for TMP was obtained after the selection the best spectral regions by siPLS.

  • Mathematical modeling on non-dispersive extraction of germanium from aqueous solutions using Aliquat 336

    摘要: In this work, the mathematical modeling of the facilitated transport of germanium (non-dispersive extraction) through a flat sheet membrane with an Aliquat 336 carrier was described. The flat sheet supported liquid membrane (FSSLM) experiments were performed under the condition being Ge ≈ 100 mg/L, the tartaric acid concentration of 2.76 mmol/L, and carrier concentrations of 2.5 to 10%v/v. The extraction equilibrium, mass transfer and diffusion equations based on Fick’s law were used. Modeling was carried out by programming in Matlab mathematical software to obtain the extraction (Kex) and mass transfer constants (Km) as the objective parameters. According to the model resolution, Kex and Km were found to be 0.178 and 9.25 × 10?2 cm/s, respectively. The correlation coefficients between model and experimental data relating to the Aliquat 336 concentrations of 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%v/v were found as 0.96, 0.98, 0.99, and 0.92. The parameters of root mean square (RMSE), bias, and scatter index (SI) showed the model accuracy. In addition, diffusion coefficients (Dm) relating to Aliquat 336 concentrations of 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%v/v were calculated using mass transfer coefficients to be 2.4 × 10??, 2.23 × 10??, 1.91 × 10??, and 1.79 × 10?? cm2/s, respectively.

  • Quantifying Double-Layer Potentials at Liquid–Gas Interfaces from Vibrational Sum-Frequency Generation

    摘要: Vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy is demonstrated as a fast method to quantify variations of the electric double-layer potential ?0 at liquid?gas interfaces. For this, mixed solutions of nonionic tetraethyleneglycol-monodecylether (C10E4) and cationic hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16TAB) surfactants were investigated using SFG spectroscopy and a thin-film pressure balance (TFPB). Derjaguin?Landau?Verwey?Overbeek analysis of disjoining pressure isotherms obtained with the TFPB technique provides complementary information on ?0, which we apply to validate the results from SFG spectroscopy. By using a single ?0 value, we can disentangle χ(2) and χ(3) contributions to the O?H stretching modes of interfacial water molecules in the SFG spectra. Having established the latter, we show that unknown double-layer potentials at the liquid?gas interface from solutions with different C16TAB/C10E4 mixing ratios can be obtained from an analysis of SFG spectra and are in excellent agreement with the complementary results from the TFPB technique.
