  • Trevor Coherence Domains in Living Systems

    摘要: The recently “pictured” pair of Nano domains (NDs) interacting coherently in time was used here to further delineate ND-behavior and develop the structure of coherence domains of increasing size. This extension started with two pairs, then four, later with many more which eventually produced a “solid” sheath (containing coherent squares or rectangles within each other). These solid sheaths are stacked atop of each other forming a solid multi-layered “raft-like structure” called Coherent Domain (CD) (ranging in size from 1 μm to several μm). It is our proposal that these CDs would then be fitting into specific cavities within organisms where their shape may need to adjust to the environment. Very little is known about the latter and how everything interacts in a living system. Various possibilities including experimental approaches are discussed.

  • Highly Controllable Lasing Actions in Lead Halide Perovskite-Si <sub/>3</sub> N <sub/>4</sub> Hybrid Micro-Resonators

    摘要: Lead halide perovskite (MAPbX3) nanosheets are promising materials for optoelectronic devices. However, as the as-grown perovskite nanosheets typically have random sizes, positions, and alignments, their device performances are hard to be controlled and repeated, significantly hindering the practical applications in nanophotonics. Herein, a novel approach to realize highly controllable lasing actions in MAPbX3 nanosheets is demonstrated. By hybridizing the perovskite with an Si3N4 wafer, it is shown that the cavity shape and the internal lasing actions are precisely controllable via the patterns in Si3N4 wafer, which is pre-defined with mature CMOS technique and will not spoil the exceptional gain of perovskite nanosheet. Consequently, whispering gallery mode (WGM) micro-lasers with well-controlled mode numbers, mode spacing, repeatability, directionalities, and even internal angular momentum are experimentally realized. In addition, by constructing coupled micro-structures, the proximity effects between WGM lasers are also explored. This research provides a substrate-control mechanism to precisely define and control MAPbX3 perovskite micro-lasers.

  • Optically induced transparency in coupled micro-cavities: tunable Fano resonance

    摘要: We theoretically investigate the phenomena of optically induced transparency for a weak probe ?eld and tunable asymmetric Fano line shape in coupled micro-cavities. One of the cavities is passive, consists of optical Kerr medium and coupled via photon tunnelling to an active cavity. The forward transmission and backward re?ection pro?le of the output ?elds are analyzed for both passive-passive and passive-active cavity system by varying di?erent system parameters. The transmission spectra show tunable transparency window and sharp asymmetric Fano line shape structure. The sharpness of line shape pro?le is controlled via the gain-to-loss ratio, photon tunnelling strength, Kerr nonlinear strength and input power. The ?ndings in this study have the potential to be used as a highly sensitive sensor and also useful for telecom system.

  • Nucleate boiling heat transfer performance of different laser processed copper surfaces

    摘要: Present study reports the nucleate pool boiling characteristics of micro structured copper surface developed by utilizing two different laser systems, namely, pulsed Nd:YAG laser and continuous wave laser. Tests are conducted at atmospheric pressure and saturation temperature by using water as pool liquid. Enhancement in heat transfer coefficients was observed over all laser processed surfaces. The maximum enhancement in heat transfer coefficient was found to be 136% and 93% for the micro structured surfaces developed by using continuous wave and pulsed laser, respectively, compared to the reference smooth surface. The enhancement in heat transfer performance of micro structured surfaces are due to the presence of surface pores, grooves and micro cavities generated due to laser melting process.
