  • Epitaxial ferroelectric oxide thin films for optical applications

    摘要: Ferroelectrics are non-centrosymmetric crystalline materials that possess a spontaneous polarization that can be switched by an electric field. The electric-field-dependent optical response of these materials makes them important for optical devices, such as modulators or beam deflectors. In the inexorable drive to miniaturization, the concept of integrated thin film optical devices has led to the incorporation of ferroelectric thin films on single-crystal substrates. These structures have appealing electro-optic modulation characteristics, interesting strain-dependent bandgaps and refractive index, as well as promising possibilities for solar harvesting. Here, we review the work on epitaxial ferroelectric (FE) films for optical applications. We first show that FE thin film materials are attractive for integrated electro-optic modulators and then show that epitaxial strain can be used to enhance the FE and optical functionality of films. Next, we describe some of the photovoltaic functionality of FE thin film materials’ systems and conclude the review by highlighting some thin-film devices that exploit the aforementioned optical effects.

  • Thermally-induced nonlinear spatial shaping of infrared femtosecond pulses in nematic liquid crystals

    摘要: An optically-induced thermal non-linear effect in a nematic liquid-crystal (E7) cell is evidenced through weak light-absorption by the ITO coating of an infrared pulsed femtosecond laser (λ0 = 1.5 μm). Strong spatial self-phase modulation is generated, thus a multiple-ring pattern is observed in the far-field. The sign of the nonlinearity is changed depending on the laser polarization. The refractive index and thermal gradients are measured as a function of the laser intensity and we observe that the temperature can increase close to the nematic phase transition. The fidelity and stability of the process open new prospects for spatial shaping devices and delimits the operating wavelength range for ultrafast liquid-crystal based electro-optic application.

  • Smart Receivers with Modular and Multifunctional Front-End Blocks: The Benefits of Using Programmable Modulators and Demodulators

    摘要: This article presents a technique to convert a standard TV receiver into an intelligent communication hub for smart home applications. The transformation of a standard TV receiver is achieved by introducing a modular front-end block, designed with a programmable modulator and demodulator based on the software-defined radio (SDR) concept. Programmable modulators and demodulators can receive different types of signals and transform one type of signal to another. A multifunctional front-end block will transform a standard TV receiver into a smart receiver.

  • Recent Advances in the Functional 2D Photonic and Optoelectronic Devices

    摘要: 2D layered materials such as graphene, black phosphorus (BP), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), and their hybrid systems exhibit wide coverage of bandgaps, unique crystal structures, and the facile integration for potential applications in photonic and optoelectronic devices. In the recent two years, various 2D functional systems have been developed with novel optoelectronic properties, thereby expanding the functional applications. Beyond the speed, efficiency, or sensitivity, these 2D crystals can offer additional advantages and distinct applications in terms of spectrum range, polarization, intensity, and structural designs. The main contents here focus on optoelectronic and photonic devices with unique functional applications, especially mentioning areas as follows: long-wavelength photodetector, 2D polarization-sensitive photodetector, 2D optoelectronic memory, and 2D material-based optical modulator. For each section, the device design, performance, and operational principles are investigated and systematically discussed. Finally, the current research status is summarized and perspectives on possible applications in future are offered.

    摘要: This work is dedicated to optimization of Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) for reversible gates. The MZI is developed by additional components such as polarization controllers and phase modulators (PM). This gives more paramaters that can be varied in optimizing the MZI. The results indicate good observation especially in varying phase angle of the PM. Since the PM has lower and upper angles, thus both combination are studied with the presence of clock signal. Eliminating unwanted signals is conducted by adjusting the position of polarization and phase delay between the two input signals. Output signals at the transmission and reflection ports are monitored that represent similarity with the truth table of MZI switch.

  • DESIGNING PLANE WAVE MODULATORS USING 1DPC NANOSTRUCTURE WITH R-GRIN DEFECT LAYER

    摘要: In this paper, we introduce plane wave modulators that are designed using one-dimensional photonic crystals (1DPC) containing radial gradient refractive index (r-GRIN) defect layers. Three kinds of r-GRIN materials with di?erent refractive index distribution functions are applied in numerical analysis. The properties of the phase and intensity of the transmitted plane wave beam through proposed structures are studied using the transfer matrix method. Radially-dependent defect modes, modulated phase and intensity are obtained according to the refractive index distribution functions. The results are predictable by regarding the Bragg condition and destructive interference, which are the origins of the photonic band gap (PBG). Due to the radial-dependency of the defect layer’s refractive index, the rays passing through di?erent transverse positions experience di?erent optical pathways. Therefore, the defect modes and transmitted spectrum (phase and amplitude) vary transversely. This study demonstrates another ability of the arti?cial PC structures to design plane wave modulators and manipulate its phase and intensity.
