  • New approach to enhancing the performance of cloud-based vision system of mobile robots

    摘要: Mobile robots require real-time performance, high computation power, and a shared computing environment. Although cloud computing offers computation power, it may adversely affect real-time performance owing to network lag. The main objective of this study is to allow a mobile robot vision system to reliably achieve real-time constraints using cloud computing. A human cloud mobile robot architecture is proposed as well as a data flow mechanism organized on both the mobile robot and the cloud server sides. Two algorithms are proposed: (i) A real-time image clustering algorithm, applied on the mobile robot side, and (ii) A modified growing neural gas algorithm, applied on the cloud server side. The experimental results demonstrate that there is a 25% to 45% enhancement in the total response time, depending on the communication bandwidth and image resolution. Moreover, better performance in terms of data size, path planning time, and accuracy is demonstrated over other state-of-the-art techniques.

    摘要: Data center (DC) traffic is expected to grow at a staggering annual rate over the next years. However, current DC networks, making use of point-to-point optical links and electronical switching systems, may be unable to meet this traffic demand with a reasonable energy consumption. Moreover, DC network traffic, characterized by dense matrices and bursty hot-spots, constitutes an additional challenge for DC networks designers. To address the capacity and energy bottlenecks and meet the traffic demands in future DC networks, this paper proposes a novel high-capacity optical switching system that employs time division multiplexing (TDM), wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), and space division multiplexing (SDM) to realize coherently modulated packet spatial super-channels (pSSCs). This optical switching system is based on three newly developed core-joint switching subsystems: an electro-absorption (EA)-based joint switch with ns switching speed, an acousto optical modulator (AOM)-based joint switch with μs switching speed, and a free-space mirror-based joint switch with ms switching speed. These switching subsystems are used in a network testbed to experimentally demonstrate a 2×2 switching node with 64 wavelength channels, 7-core pSSCs modulated at 32 GBd. The results confirm a record switching capacity of 53.3 Tb/s/port and network protection in case of a multi-core fiber (MFC) failure in less than 10 ms.

    摘要: At the Italian national level, GARR optical network is composed of two separate optical network domains. With the aim to integrate them we decided to use the alien wavelength technique. This is a hybrid solution based on the transmission and reception of optical signals, called alien wavelengths, that are transported on an infrastructure that is different from the one that generated them. We tested the technique first on a field trial, on two portions of our network of about 350 and 1200km long in order to measure the achievable performance. Based on the successful results we then implemented such technique on the production environment on about 3000km to deliver high-performance services. In this way we improved the overall efficiency of the Italian research and education network in a cost-effective way. This paper describes the overall activity, results and our experience in integrating the alien wavelengths in a production environment, with a special emphasis on deployment and operational issues.

  • Converged Inter/Intradata Center Optical Network with Packet Super-channels and 83.33 Tb/s/port

    摘要: We experimentally demonstrate a novel time-slotted, converged inter/intra data center optical network that employs multi-core fibers (MFCs), packet spatial super-channels (pSSCs) and core-joint optical switches. The fundamental switching subsystem is the high-granularity core-joint electro-absorption optical switch, based on an array of electro-absorption 1x4 switching gates with a switching time of approximately 10 ns, and able to jointly switch all the wavelength and spatial channels of the pSSCs simultaneously. Lower granularity core-joint switches may be used in the pSSC switching nodes for other tasks such as network protection or bypass. Previously, we experimentally demonstrated a 2x2 pSSC switching system with a capacity of 53.3 Tb/s/port in a testbed with pSSCs composed of 64 wavelength channels, 7 spatial channels and PDM-QPSK-modulated payloads. In this work, we enhance our testbed experimental setup to demonstrate a record switching capacity of 83.33 Tb/s/port with pSSCs composed of 64 wavelength channels, 8 spatial channels and PDM-8PSK-modulated payloads. We also demonstrate the transparency of the core-joint electro-absorption switch by comparing the new results with the previous PDM-QPSK results in terms of the error-vector magnitude.

  • Deterministic quantum state transfer between remote atoms with photon-number superposition states

    摘要: We propose a protocol for quantum networking based on deterministic quantum state transfer between distant memory nodes using photon-number superposition states (PNSS). In the suggested scheme, the quantum nodes are single atoms con?ned in high-?nesse optical cavities linked by photonic channels. The quantum information written in a superposition of atomic Zeeman states of sending system is faithfully mapped through cavity-assisted Raman scattering onto PNSS of linearly polarized cavity photons. The photons travel to the receiving cavity, where they are coherently absorbed with unit probability creating the same superposition state of the second atom, thus ensuring high-?delity transfer between distant nodes. We develop this approach at ?rst for photonic qubit and show that this superposition state is no less reliably protected against the propagation losses compared to the single-photon polarization states, whereas the limitation associated with the delivery of more than one photon does not affect the process ?delity. Then, by preserving the advantages of qubits, we extend the developed technique to the case of state transfer by photonic qutrit, which evidently possesses more information capacity. This reliable and ef?cient scheme promises also a successful distribution of entanglement over long distances in quantum networks.

    摘要: In SDN-enabled networks, the control plane and data plane interaction relies on open SouthBound Interfaces (SBIs) so that the SDN controller exercises direct control over the data plane elements. In this paper, we review current initiatives of SBI to control optical components which include ad-hoc extensions of OpenFlow and YANG modelling proposals combined with the NETCONF / RESTCONF protocols. Then we overview different tools and frameworks available for quick prototyping and deployment of software services that are compliant with such interfaces. Finally, we discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the reviewed initiatives considered key enablers for standardized end-to-end network programmability.

  • Hierarchical Learning for Cognitive End-to-End Service Provisioning in Multi-Domain Autonomous Optical Networks

    摘要: This paper demonstrates, for the ?rst time to our knowledge, hierarchical learning framework for inter-domain service provisioning in software-de?ned elastic optical networking (SD-EON). By using a broker-based hierarchical architecture, the broker collaborates with the domain managers to realize ef?cient global service provisioning without violating the privacy constrains of each domain. In the proposed hierarchical learning scheme, machine learning-based cognition agents exist in the domain managers as well as in the broker. The proposed system is experimentally demonstrated on a two-domain seven-node EON testbed for with real-time optical performance monitors (OPMs). By using over 42000 datasets collected from OPM units, the cognition agents can be trained to accurately infer the Q-factor of an unestablished or established lightpath, enabling an impairment-aware end-to-end service provisioning with an prediction Q-factor deviation less than 0.6 dB.

    摘要: Named data networking (NDN) has received considerable attention recently, mainly due to its built-in caching, which is expected to enable widespread and transparent operator-controlled caching. One of the important research challenges is to reduce the amount of power consumed by NDN networks as it has been shown that NDN’s name prefix matching and caching are power-hungry. As a first step to achieving power-efficient NDN networks, in this paper, we develop a power consumption model of a multicore software NDN router. By applying this model to analyze how caching reduces power, we report that caching can reduce power consumption of an NDN network if the power consumption of routers is in proportion to their load and the computation of caching is as light as that of forwarding.

  • Special Issue on Optical Communications and Networking: Prospects in Industrial Applications

    摘要: In the past two decades, Internet traffic has increased by over 10,000 times by taking advantage of both efficient information processing technology in the electronic domain and efficient transmission technology in the optical domain, which are the foundation of today’s Internet infrastructure [1,2]. The advancement of electronics processing circuits has followed Moore’s law, and perhaps will continue this exponential growth for years to come. This may make the electrical systems significantly outpace the advancement of optical systems in information and communications technologies. To support the ever-growing Internet traffic, optical communication systems face a great challenge in transporting information processed by electronic systems for sustained exponential growth. The industry has explored multiple degrees of freedom of the photon (time, wavelength, amplitude, phase, polarization, and space) to significantly reduce the cost/bit for data transmission by increasing the capacity/fiber through multiplexing and reducing the size and power through integration.
