    摘要: Bit-error rate measurements for ON-OFF keying modulation at multigigabit per second rates over a V-band wireless link are presented. Serial data-rates from 2.5 to 20 Gb/s were studied for a 231-1 bit random sequence. Error-free data transfer over a 0.3-m link was achieved at up to 10 Gb/s. Acceptable bit-error rates, <10?5 and 10?3, were measured at up to 1.5 m for 10- and 15-Gb/s data-rate, respectively. The performance was achieved using a transmitter that consists of an integrated wavelet generator, whereas the receiver was built from off-the-shelf waveguide components. The results demonstrate that very high data-rates may be achieved using binary modulation and short symbols generated in an efficient V-band transmitter. The system is benchmarked against state-of-the-art transceiver systems with multigigabit per second data-rates.

    摘要: Free-space optical communication links operating over lognormal turbulence channels using on-off keying (OOK) are studied in this paper. Such systems can suffer from irreducible error floors that result from the use of demodulation with fixed and unoptimized detection thresholds. The resulting error floors are analyzed for the general case of low- and high-state offsets (i.e., finite extinction ratios). An electrical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) optimized detection system is applied. The system uses the electrical SNRs to implement adaptive detection thresholds and eliminate the error floors. The system can accommodate operation with finite extinction ratios, as it uses the method of moments and maximum likelihhod estimation techniques to estimate the low- and high-state offsets and electrical SNR. Numerical results show that the SNR gap between the electrical-SNR-optimized detection system and the adaptive detection system is 2.3 dB at a bit-error rate of 10?5 without a state offset. The SNR gap increases to 4.5 dB with a state offset of ξ = 0.2.

  • Toward Long-Distance Underwater Wireless Optical Communication Based on A High-Sensitivity Single Photon Avalanche Diode

    摘要: In this study, we built a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) receiver based underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system. The bit error rate (BER) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance of UWOC with different distances and data transmission rates were obtained. Based on the water attenuation coefficient of 0.12 m-1, a series of neutral density (ND) filters were exploited to attenuate the light output power from the blue laser diode (LD) to simulate the long distance UWOC. The maximum estimated distances of 144 m and 117 m with corresponding BERs of 1.89 × 10-3 and 5.31 × 10-4 at data transmission rates of 500 bps and 2 Mbps were acquired in UWOC system using on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme, respectively. Furthermore, we compared the differences between free-space and underwater channels, and a divergence angle of ~1.02 mrad was measured experimentally at a distance of 50 m in the free space. The long UWOC distances obtained in this study partly benefit from high sensitivity SPAD, the small laser divergence angle and low light attenuation. This study provides an approach to achieve long distance UWOC using SPAD.

    摘要: The exponentiated Weibull (EW) distribution is adopted for all turbulence strengths when aperture averaging technology is applied. Firstly, the closed expression of the average bit error rate (BER) of a free space optical (FSO) system using polarization shift keying (POLSK) modulation under EW atmosphere turbulence model is derived. Then the effects of aperture averaging under different turbulence conditions described by the EW distribution are numerically studied with computer simulation, and the average BER of POLSK modulated system is compared with that of an on-off-keying (OOK) system. Numerical results show the effects of aperture averaging on the average BER under different turbulence strengths. The POLSK modulated FSO systems can offer better BER performance compared to OOK scheme.

    摘要: We study the influence of the combined effect of laser phase noise and intercore crosstalk on the outage probability of direct-detection 10 Gbit/s on-off keying optical communication systems. We show that the laser phase noise can affect significantly the outage probability, for lasers with linewidths in the MHz range, for low and high skew-bit rate products. We also show that the laser phase noise effect on the received eye-pattern is qualitatively similar to the one found for high skew-bit rate product in the absence of laser phase noise.

  • VCSEL-based differential modulation technique for high-speed gigabit passive optical networks

    摘要: With the convergence towards 5G, optical networks need to be upgraded to support the emerging data tsunami. This work experimentally demonstrates the first real-time transmission of 20 Gbps over a class 10G 1550 nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) in the context of on-off-keying (OOK) modulation format, by employing VCSEL differential drive mode technique, for adoption in high-speed gigabit passive optical networks (GPONs). Two OOK data streams each with 10 Gbps are differentially modulated onto a single VCSEL, therefore generating an aggregated data rate of 20 Gbps OOK signal. A receiver sensitivity of -13.36 dBm is experimentally achieved. Through extinction ratio optimization, an error free transmission over 24.7 km single mode fibre is attained, with a transmission penalty of 1.91 dB. Our proposed technique alleviates band-limitation of the VCSEL carrier, and doubles the channel data rate without replacing the transmitter optics.
