  • Large diameter fiber-optics tweezers for Escherichia coli bacteria manipulation

    摘要: Large diameter ?ber-optics tweezers are proposed in this paper, and their ability to trap and deliver Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria was characterized. The tweezers were formed by tapering four-mode ?ber (FMF) with 8.7 μm diameter, allowing the resonance ?eld of the extended high-order modes to be used for manipulating the micro-objects. The diameter of the FMF taper was much larger than that of reported ?ber-optic devices with nanoscale diameter, thereby making the device work as sturdier tweezers. The key factor for success is that, along the light transmission axis, the higher order modes have a unique mode ?eld that extends longer and with a larger range around the ?ber waist than the fundamental mode. At wavelengths ranging from 1500 to 1600 nm, especially close to 1560 nm, trapping and delivering of E. coli along the ?ber was observed. In addition, a further demonstration for operation time shows a larger tapered ?ber diameter was able to extend the service life of tweezers. The higher order micro-?ber modes offer a new opportunity for optical manipulation at the single-cell level.

  • Polymer Optical Fibers for Sensing

    摘要: Sensing techniques based on optical ?bers are used in numerous key ?elds. For example, optical ?ber sensors are exploited in medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, physical parameters detection, industrial applications, food safety, and security. In fact, optical ?ber sensors are used for their numerous capabilities, as for example when in the detection fast, portable, low-cost, small size, and/or rugged sensor systems are needed. In general, the optical ?ber for sensing applications can be a glass one, a specialty one, or a polymer one. Polymer optical ?bers (POFs) are especially advantageous due to their excellent ?exibility, easy manipulation, large diameter, resilience, and the fact that plastic is able to withstand smaller bend radii than glass. These POF sensors, intrinsic and extrinsic, combined with di?erent kinds of receptors can be directly connected to an online platform by interface software, allowing storing, analyzing, and displaying the sensor’s data, to realize low-cost biochemical sensors for several applications. In this work, two plasmonic POF sensors, one intrinsic and another one extrinsic, that can be used in biochemical applications are described.

  • Progress toward third-order parametric down-conversion in optical fibers

    摘要: Optical ?bers have been considered an optimal platform for third-order parametric down-conversion since they can potentially overcome the weak third-order nonlinearity by their long interaction length. Here we present, in the ?rst part, a theoretical derivation for the conversion rate both in the case of spontaneous generation and in the presence of a seed beam. Then we review three types of optical ?bers and we examine their properties in terms of conversion ef?ciency and practical feasibility.

    摘要: Multicore ?bers and few-mode ?bers have potential application in realizing dense-space-division multiplexing systems. However, there are some tradeoff requirements for designing the ?bers. In this paper, the tradeoff requirements such as spatial channel count, crosstalk, differential mode delay, and cladding diameter are discussed. Further, the design concept and transmission characteristics of high-core-count single-mode multicore ?bers are discussed. A heterogeneous multicore ?ber with 30 cores and quasi-single-mode multi-core ?bers with 31 cores are developed.

  • Nonlinear Fiber Optics || Four-wave mixing

    摘要: In the stimulated scattering processes covered in Chapters 8 and 9, optical ?bers play an active role in the sense that the process depends on molecular vibrations or density variations of silica. In a separate class of nonlinear phenomena, optical ?bers play a passive role except for mediating interaction among several optical waves. Such nonlinear processes are referred to as parametric processes, because they involve modulation of a medium parameter, such as the refractive index, and require phase-matching before they can build up along the ?ber. Among these, four-wave mixing (FWM) plays the dominant role. FWM has attracted considerable attention as it is useful for a variety of applications. We discuss the origin of FWM in Section 10.1 before developing a simple scalar theory of this process in Section 10.2. The techniques used for phase-matching are covered in Section 10.3. The focus of Section 10.4 is on parametric ampli?cation, and the polarization effects related to this process are discussed in Section 10.5. Some applications of FWM are covered in Section 10.6.

  • Polarization Modulation Instability in All-Normal Dispersion Microstructured Optical Fibers With Quasi-Continuous Pump

    摘要: We report the experimental observation of the polarization modulation instability (PMI) effect in all-normal dispersion (ANDi) microstructured optical ?bers (MOFs) with quasi-continuous pumping. The small unintentional birefringence (~10?5), that any realistic non-polarization maintaining MOF exhibits, contributes to this nonlinear effect. PMI can produce two sidebands whose polarization state is orthogonal to the polarization of the pump. In this work, only one type of PMI process is observed, i.e., when the pump is polarized along the slow axis of the ?ber and sidebands are generated in the fast axis mode. This PMI process was studied experimentally in two ANDi ?bers with different dispersion features and pumped with long (700 ps) pump pulses at 1064 nm. Experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations, with reasonably good agreement.
