  • Absolute distance measurement based on spectral interferometry using femtosecond optical frequency comb

    摘要: We demonstrated an absolute distance measurement method based on the frequency folding e?ect using the spectral interferometry of femtosecond optical frequency comb. And the investigation was carried out on the ranging accuracy in?uence of the phase noise in the traditional complicated phase unwrapping method via band-pass ?lter and Fourier Transform. To reduce the e?ects of the phase noise, we proposed the non-?ltered and di?erential envelop phase demodulation method, and its robustness was illustrated with a standard deviation of 75 nm for the stability of single point measurements. Further, through the extension of the non-ambiguity range, we achieved a resolution of better than 30 ??m in a long distance measurements range of 70 m, yielding a relative precision of 3.1 × 10 ? 7.

  • Long tapered fiber with array of FBG

    摘要: A tapered optical fiber with an adiabatic transition from single-mode to a few-mode part has been fabricated with an array of fiber Bragg gratings being inscribed during the drawing process. We demonstrate that the propagating optical signal remains single-mode along the tapered fiber FBG array even in a multimode part of it. The spectral width of the reflected signal from the tapered optical fiber is 4 nm. The level of the reflected signal is up to 5% at some wavelengths.

  • Refractive Index Measurement of Lithium Ion Battery Electrolyte with Etched Surface Cladding Waveguide Bragg Gratings and Cell Electrode State Monitoring by Optical Strain Sensors

    摘要: In this scientific publication, a new sensor approach for status monitoring, such as state of charge and state of health, of lithium ion batteries by using special Bragg gratings inscribed into standard optical glass fibers is presented. In addition to well-known core gratings, embedded into the anode of 5 Ah lithium ion pouch cells as a strain monitoring unit, the manufacturing of a surface cladding waveguide Bragg grating sensor incorporated into the cell’s separator, that is sensitive to changes of the refractive index of the surrounding medium, is demonstrated. On the basis of the experiments carried out, characteristics of the cell behavior during standard cyclization and recognizable marks in subsequent post-mortem analyses of the cell components are shown. No negative influence on the cell performance due to the integrated sensors have been observed; however, the results show a clear correlation between fading cell capacity and changes of the interior optical signals. Additionally, with the novel photonic sensor, variations in the electrolyte characteristics are determinable as the refractive index of the solution changes at different molar compositions. Furthermore, with the manufactured battery cells, abuse tests by overcharging were conducted, and it was thereby demonstrated how internal battery sensors can derive additional information beyond conventional battery management systems to feasibly prevent catastrophic cell failures. The result of the research work is an early stage photonic sensor that combines chemical, mechanical and thermal information from inside the cell for an enhanced battery status analysis.

  • Programmable Spectral Filter in C-Band Based on Digital Micromirror Device

    摘要: Optical ?lters have been adopted in many applications such as recon?gurable telecommunication switches, tunable lasers and spectral imaging. However, most of commercialized ?lters based on a micro-electrical-mechanical system (MEMS) only provide a minimum bandwidth of 25 GHz in telecom so far. In this work, the programmable ?lter based on a digital micromirror device (DMD) experimentally demonstrated a minimum bandwidth of 12.5 GHz in C-band that matched the grid width of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) G.694.1 standard. It was capable of ?ltering multiple wavebands simultaneously and ?exibly by remotely uploading binary holograms onto the DMD. The number of channels and the center wavelength could be adjusted independently, as well as the channel bandwidth and the output power. The center wavelength tuning resolution of this ?lter achieved 0.033 nm and the insertion loss was about 10 dB across the entire C-band. Since the DMD had a high power handling capability (25 KW/cm2) of around 200 times that of the liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) chip, the DMD-based ?lters are expected to be applied in high power situations.

  • Simultaneous Measurement of Refractive Index and Temperature Based on a Peanut-Shape Structure In-Line Fiber Mach–Zehnder Interferometer

    摘要: We proposed a peanut-shape structure in-line fiber Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) for simultaneous measurement of refractive index (RI) and temperature. Two kinds of demodulation methods were investigated and compared. The wavelength-related and phase-related character matrices of the in-line fiber MZI were determined for simultaneous measurement of RI and temperature, respectively. For the wavelength-related measurement, the highest temperature and RI sensitivities were 0.0709 nm/°C and ?47.3620 nm/RIU, respectively. The phase-related measurement was with a lower measuring errors compared to the wavelength-related measurement, and the highest temperature and RI sensitivities were ?0.0632rad/°C (0.0764 nm/°C) and 77.0995rad/RIU (?93.2429 nm/RIU), respectively. The minimum measuring errors of temperature and RI were 0.3800 °C and 0.0004 RIU, respectively.

  • Pixelated-polarization-camera-based polarimetry system for wide real-time optical rotation measurement

    摘要: Chirality is an essential consideration in the field of life sciences and pharmaceutical industry because most biomolecules and pharmaceuticals are chiral, and optical rotation measurement is a simple and efficient means for identification, purity test and content detection of chiral materials. However, there are some drawbacks in existing methods, such as small measurement range, non-real-time performance, low measurement accuracy and resolution. This paper presents a novel system to implement optical rotation measurement, and pixelated polarization cameras and Stokes parameters are employed in the system. The polarization information of linearly polarized incident light can be recorded and extracted by a pixelated polarization camera and Stokes parameters respectively. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed system has the necessary advantages for optical rotation measurement, such as real time, wide range ( ?90 ° ~ +90 °), high accuracy ( ±4 ×10?6 °) and high resolution ( 6 ×10?11 °). Thus, this measurement system has great practical prospects in the hospital clinical diagnosis, chemical research, sugar production and pharmaceutical industry.

  • Temperature-dependent photo-response in multiferroic BiFeO 3 revealed by transmission measurements

    摘要: We studied the light-induced effects in BiFeO3 single crystals as a function of temperature by means of optical spectroscopy. Here, we report the observation of several light-induced absorption features, which are discussed in terms of the photostriction effect and are interpreted in terms of excitons. The temperature dependence of their energy position suggests a possible coupling between the excitons and the lattice vibrations. Moreover, there are hints for anomalies in the temperature evolution of the excitonic features, which might be related to the temperature-induced magnetic phase transitions in BiFeO3. Our findings suggest a coupling between light-induced excitons and the lattice and spin degrees of freedom, which might be relevant for the observed ultrafast photostriction effect in multiferroic BiFeO3.

  • Hydrogen peroxide detection with a silver nanoparticle grating chip fabricated by plasmonic plating

    摘要: An optical detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is proposed, using grating structures of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Periodic line structures of AgNPs are deposited on a gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-decorated glass plate using an interference exposure with a green laser beam, based on the plasmonic plating method. This AgNP grating chip diffracts incident light, and the diffraction efficiency is dependent on the amount of AgNPs. By applying a drop of H2O2 solution onto the chip, the diffraction intensity declines due to the autocatalytic decomposition of AgNPs. A portable measurement system of the diffraction intensity change is constructed, and the H2O2 detection in the concentration range 6.7 – 668 μmol/L is performed in 2 min simply by dropping the H2O2 solution onto the substrate.

  • Precise label-free leukocyte subpopulation separation using hybrid acoustic-optical chip

    摘要: Leukocyte subpopulations contain crucial physiological information; hence, precise and specific leukocyte separation is very important for leukemia diagnosis and analysis. However, conventional centrifugation and immunofluorescence-based separation methods are inaccurate and inconvenient due to the overlapping cell size and density or complex marking processes. Herein, we report a new label-free technology for precise leukocyte subpopulation separation by synergy of acoustic and optical technologies. Standing surface acoustic wave (SSAW) solved the problem of gentle and precise focusing of cells in optical systems. In addition, SSAW was used for the separation of granulocytes, which have evident size distinction from other components. In case of lymphocytes and monocytes, which have overlap in size/density, optical force could distinguish them accurately based on the RI difference, with the convenience of acoustic pre-focusing. In this experiment, separation of three types of leukocyte subtypes with considerable throughput and purity was conducted, through which we obtained 99% pure lymphocytes, 98% pure monocytes, and 95% pure granulocytes. Experimental results prove that the device has robust ability in separating leukocyte phenotypes and have the advantages of being non-invasive, label-free and precise. In the future, this convenient hybrid method will be a potential powerful tool for auxiliary clinical diagnosis and analysis.
