    摘要: Polarization modulation instability (PMI) is a form of modulation instability that can exist in weakly birefringent optical fibers. Sidebands can be generated by this effect when a polarization mode of the birefringent fiber is excited with an intense optical pump. The polarization state of the sidebands is orthogonal to the polarization of the pump signal. PMI has been observed in microstructured optical fibers (MOFs). PMI was reported in a large-air-filling fraction MOF that was pumped in the normal dispersion regime with visible light. The coherent degradation of femtosecond supercontinuum light generated in all-normal dispersion (ANDi) MOFs due to PMI was recently investigated. Here, we report the experimental observation of PMI effect in ANDi MOFs with picosecond pumping at 1064 nm.

    摘要: Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have been increasingly implemented in different research fields or industrial applications. Large amounts of data are processed daily in order to extract useful information using machine learning techniques. Many research groups have shown impressive results on improving resolution in microscopy and quantitative phase retrieval by training DNNs on real datasets. Recently, recovery and reconstruction of images after they have propagated through multimode optical fibers (MMFs) have also been achieved using DNNs. When images propagate through MMFs they suffer severe scrambling because the information gets distributed among the different spatial modes that the fiber supports. Furthermore, since the fiber modes propagate with different velocities, the local information of the input decorrelates after a few millimeters along the MMF, thus resulting in the formation of a speckle pattern at the output. Recovery of information from such speckle patterns is of practical interest for integrating the MMFs for endoscopic applications in medicine or for signal recovery in telecommunications.

  • Implementation of Optical Fiber Post-Mortem Dose Measurements: a Proof of Concept

    摘要: We describe the implementation of a versatile system and corresponding method to perform fast post-mortem optical attenuation measurements on irradiated Optical Fibers (OFs) for dosimetry purposes. The measurement is based on the Radiation Induced Attenuation (RIA) phenomenon. We employ a dual wavelength Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) coupled with a suitable radiation sensitive OF. We demonstrate that radiation dose levels higher than 100 Gy(SiO2) can be measured efficiently with 1 m long samples. The accuracy of the measurement increases with the increasing radiation dose if the length of the sample is kept fix. We also highlight possible limitations of our approach and, more generally, limitations related to perform accurate RIA measurement (online or post-mortem) on short single mode OF samples. The technological solution we propose can be tailored to address different radiation environment.

It also discusses how they may be incorporated into power cable transmission land and submarine corridors as well as the potential challenges that one may encounter during installation, particularly when fibers are embedded in the power cable itself.

  • Broadband visible-to-NIR ASE from Bismuth doped optical fibers: a window towards lasing

    摘要: We report broadband ASE within 650-825nm, peaking at 655nm, 680nm, 715nm, from Bismuth (Bi) doped optical fibers (BDFs) under 533nm core-pumping excitation technique; 715nm peak was prominent among others. Fiber preforms were fabricated through MCVD process associated with solution doping technique using Bi-,Yttrium/Lithium co-doped phosphosilicate, germanosilicate glasses (BYPS/BYGS/BLGS) as core materials. Optimum fiber lengths providing maximum ASE were 15cm for BYPS and 35cm for BYGS fibers. Possible issues behind strong ASE without any lasing were demonstrated using modal analysis of BDFs at 533nm and 715nm. This study is a step towards developing visible-to-NIR laser using BDFs of such types.

  • Laser-Induced Deposition of Carbon Nanotubes in Fiber Optic Tips of MMI Devices

    摘要: The integration of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into optical fibers allows the application of their unique properties in robust and versatile devices. Here, we present a laser-induced technique to obtain the deposition of CNTs onto the fiber optics tips of multimode interference (MMI) devices. An MMI device is constructed by splicing a section of no-core fiber (NCF) to a single-mode fiber (SMF). The tip of the MMI device is immersed into a liquid solution of CNTs and laser light is launched into the MMI device. CNTs solutions using water and methanol as solvents were tested. In addition, the use of a polymer dispersant polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in the CNTs solutions was also studied. We found that the laser-induced deposition of CNTs performed in water-based solutions generates non-uniform deposits. On the other hand, the laser-induced deposition performed with methanol solutions generates uniform deposits over the fiber tip when no PVP is used and deposition at the center of the fiber when PVP is present in the CNTs solution. The results show the crucial role of the solvent on the spatial features of the laser-induced deposition process. Finally, we register and study the reflection spectra of the as-fabricated CNTs deposited MMI devices.

  • Scenarios and Economic Analysis of Fronthaul in 5G Optical Networks

    摘要: This work presents a techno-economical comparison between different emerging architectural approaches for 5G networks: C-RAN, centralized, where a BBU hotel collects several streams, able to meet challenging requirements imposed by emerging 5G technology and DA-RAN, considered as an evolution of C-RAN, where resources are disaggregated in order to satisfy the requirements of different applications. Main results, obtained by an analytical evaluation of the cost of a metropolitan area network, show that disaggregating the hardware and software radio access network brings architectural and functional advantages, able to better meet the bandwidth and latency requirements imposed by the 5G verticals. Once analyzed the validness of the solution, we provide a cost analysis that firstly demonstrates that DA-RAN also brings economic advantages w.r.t. C-RAN. Furthermore, observing that the predominant share of the cost of the solution is given by the fiber of the local loop, we evaluate the introduction of TWDM PON in this area in order to share the fiber and reduce the cost of the network.

    摘要: We investigated phase noise induced in a piece of optical fiber installed in an ultra-stable environment. The ultra-stable environments were implemented by hermetically sealing, vacuuming, temperature stabilization, vibration isolation, and acoustic shielding. Moreover, in order to detect and evaluate such small fiber noise with high sensitivity, we employed the well-known self-heterodyne technique. The most stable environment drastically reduced the phase noise induced in a 10-m fiber; the noise corresponds to Allan deviation of 7 × 10?20 at 1-s averaging time, and to 2 × 10?21 at 10000-s averaging time (measurement bandwidth: 500 Hz).

  • Application of spectroelectroanalysis for the quantitative determination of mixtures of compounds with highly overlapping signals

    摘要: The amount of qualitative and quantitative information provided by a UV?vis absorption spectroelectrochemistry (SEC) experiment is sometimes wasted. However, almost all electrochemical and spectroscopic data can provide valuable information. In this spirit, the main objective proposed in this work is the quantitative resolution of catechol/dopamine (CAT/DA) and dopamine/epinephrine (DA/EP) mixtures, using spectroelectrochemical sensors in long optical path length arrangement based on bare optical fibers in parallel configuration with respect to carbon nanotubes or screen-printed electrodes. These compounds show extremely similar electrochemical and spectroscopic responses at high acidic pH, being impossible to determine their concentrations in the mixtures just using univariate regression models. To our knowledge, the SEC ability to resolve complex mixtures has never been demonstrated before with signals with this degree of overlapping. The quantitative analysis of these mixtures is possible using multivariate regression analysis of a set of time-resolved spectroelectrochemical data with a powerful statistical tool such as parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). PARAFAC enables us to extract all the information from the experiments, allowing us to quantify the different analytes in mixtures of varying concentrations with excellent results. This milestone for spectroelectroanalysis illustrates the expected capabilities of SEC and demonstrates experimentally the potential of this technique for sensing of biomolecules.

  • Crosstalk-Aware Core and Spectrum Assignment in a Multicore Optical Link with Flexible Grid

    摘要: Multicore Fibers (MCFs) are one of the main technological enablers for Space Division Multiplexing. In principle, MCFs could scale the fiber capacity by a factor equal to the number of cores, but in practice such increase is hindered by transmission impairments due to the inter-core crosstalk between adjacent lit cores. The entity of such crosstalk depends on the number of cores and on their disposition within the fiber cladding, but also on the baud rate and modulation format used for transmission. As first MCF applications are expected over point-to-point systems, in this study we concentrate on the resource allocation over a single link. Specifically, we study the Baud rate, Modulation format, Core and Spectrum Assignment (BMCSA) problem in a multicore flexi-grid link, considering distance-adaptive reaches for different baud rates, modulation formats and crosstalk impairments. We show that the problem is NP-hard and provide two integer linear programs, as well as heuristic approaches to solve it over large/practical traffic instances. Our problem formulations incorporate modelling of the exact inter-core crosstalk contributions depending on the number of lit neighbor cores. Numerical results are provided in a high-spatial-efficiency 19-core fiber considering different transmission impairment conditions.
