  • Are Nano-Composite Coatings the Key for Photovoltaic Panel Self-Maintenance: An Experimental Evaluation

    摘要: This article shows the in?uence of an anti-fouling nano-coating on the electrical energy produced by a string of photovoltaic modules. The coating effect was evaluated comparing the energy produced by two strings of the same PV power plant: one of them was cleaned and the other was cleaned and treated with the coating before the monitoring campaign. The PV plant is located in Modena, north of Italy. A ?rst monitoring campaign of nine days after the treatment shows that the treatment increases the energy production on the PV arrays by about 1.82%. Results indicate that the increase is higher during sunny days with respect to cloudy days. A second monitoring campaign of the same length, but ?ve months later, shows that the energy gain decreases from 1.82% to 0.69% due to the aging of the coating, which is guaranteed for one year by the manufacturer. A technical-economical analysis demonstrates that at the moment the yearly economic gain is 0.43 e per square meter of panel and the cost of the treatment is about 1 e per square meter. However, large scale diffusion can reduce the production cost and thus increase the affordability of the coating.

  • Laser crystallized low-loss polycrystalline silicon waveguides

    摘要: We report the fabrication of low-loss, low temperature deposited polysilicon waveguides via laser crystallization. The process involves pre-patterning amorphous silicon ?lms to con?ne the thermal energy during the crystallization phase, which helps to control the grain growth and reduce the heat transfer to the surrounding media, making it compatible with CMOS integration. Micro-Raman spectroscopy, Secco etching and X-ray di?raction measurements reveal the high crystalline quality of the processed waveguides with the formation of millimeter long crystal grains. Optical losses as low as 5.3 dB/cm have been measured, indicating their suitability for the development of high-density integrated circuits.

  • Powerful transversally diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser with low depolarization losses

    摘要: The optical losses introduced into the cavity of transversally diode pumped Nd:YAG lasers operating in the linearly polarized Q-switched mode by the induced birefringence were evaluated. The relationship between the loss values and the state of the side surface of laser active elements was established. It has been shown that the active elements with adhesive light-scattering layers on their side surfaces make it possible to create the laser sources not only with a high degree of uniformity of the distribution of radiation within the output beam cross-section, but also with a low level of the optical depolarization losses.

  • A monolithic nanostructured-perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell: feasibility of light management through geometry and materials selection

    摘要: The use of several layers of different materials, taking advantage of their complementary bandgap energies, improves the absorption in multi-junction solar cells. Unfortunately, the inherent efficiency increment of this strategy has a limitation: each interface introduces optical losses. In this paper, we study the effects of materials and geometry in the optical performance of a nanostructured hybrid perovskite – silicon tandem solar cell. our proposed design increases the performance of both subcells by managing light towards the active layer, as well as by minimizing reflections losses in the interfaces. We sweep both refractive index and thickness of the transport layers and the dielectric spacer composing the metasurface, obtaining a range of these parameters for the proper operation of the device. Using these values, we obtain a reduction in the optical losses, in particular they are more than a 33% lower than those of a planar cell, mainly due to a reduction of the reflectivity in the device. This approach leads to an enhancement in the optical response, widens the possibilities for the manufacturers to use different materials, and allows wide geometrical tolerances.
