[IEEE 2018 IEEE Biomedical Circuits and Systems Conference (BioCAS) - Cleveland, OH, USA (2018.10.17-2018.10.19)] 2018 IEEE Biomedical Circuits and Systems Conference (BioCAS) - Battery-Free. Sticker-Like, Device for Health Monitoring, Operated by Optical Power Transfer
摘要: This work presents the concept of a battery-free, sticker-like, device for a non-invasive health-monitoring sensor. The device consists of two functional blocks: an optical power-transfer block and an amperometric measurement block. The former accumulates power from a series-connected photovoltaic cell in a capacitor and intermittently supplies the power to the amperometric measurement circuit. This circuit is driven by powering pulses and displays the amperometric current as the durations of the light pulses from a light-emitting diode. The function of the circuit was successfully demonstrated through simulations, in which the equivalent circuit of an electrochemical glucose sensor was used as an example. The simulation results showed that the proposed device would work as expected for a variety of glucose concentrations at an oxidation voltage of 0.8 V.

Stereotaktische Laserthermoablation bei mesialer Temporallappenepilepsie mit Hippocampussklerose rechts a?? Patientenentscheidung, Durchf??hrung und Visualisierung von Ged?¤chtnisfunktion; Stereotactic laser thermal ablation of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with right hippocampal sclerosisa??patient decision-making, realization and visualization of memory function;
摘要: This article reports about a 30-year-old male patient who had suffered from a focal epilepsy with epigastric auras, unaware seizures and rarely bilateral tonic clonic seizures due to hippocampal sclerosis since the age of 21 years. The patient was offered the standard anterior temporal lobe resection and alternatively stereotactic laser thermal ablation, which recently received approval with the European CE mark. The patient opted for stereotactic laser ablation because of its less invasive nature compared to standard craniotomy and resection. This article reports the clinical course over a 9-month follow-up period. Additionally, the method and the results of a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) memory examination are summarized.

摘要: Recent advances in biosensors, medical instrumentation, and information processing and communication technologies (ICT) have enabled significant improvements in healthcare. However, these technologies have been mainly applied in clinical environments, such as hospitals and healthcare facilities, under managed care by well-trained and specialized individuals. The global challenge of providing quality healthcare at affordable cost leads to the proposed paradigm of Preventive, Personalized, and Precision Medicine that requires a seamless use of technology and infrastructure support for patients and healthcare providers at point-of-care (POC) locations including homes, semi or pre-clinical facilities, and hospitals. The complexity of the global healthcare challenge necessitates strong collaborative interdisciplinary synergies involving all stakeholder groups including academia, federal research institutions, industry, regulatory agencies, and clinical communities. It is critical to evolve with collaborative efforts on the translation of research to technology development toward clinical validation and potential healthcare applications. This special issue is focused on technology innovation and translational research for POC applications with potential impact in improving global healthcare in the respective areas. Some of these papers were presented at the NIH-IEEE Strategic Conference on Healthcare Innovations and POC Technologies for Precision Medicine (HI-POCT) held at the NIH on November 9–10, 2015. The papers included in the Special Issue provide a spectrum of critical issues and collaborative resources on translational research of advanced POC devices and ICT into global healthcare environment.

Reflecting health: smart mirrors for personalized medicine
摘要: Inexpensive embedded computing and the related Internet of Things technologies enable the recent development of smart products that can respond to human needs and improve everyday tasks in an attempt to make traditional environments more “intelligent”. Several projects have augmented mirrors for a range of smarter applications in automobiles and homes. The opportunity to apply smart mirror technology to healthcare to predict and to monitor aspects of health and disease is a natural but mostly underdeveloped idea. We envision that smart mirrors comprising a combination of intelligent hardware and software could identify subtle, yet clinically relevant changes in physique and appearance. Similarly, a smart mirror could record and evaluate body position and motion to identify posture and movement issues, as well as offer feedback for corrective actions. Successful development and implementation of smart mirrors for healthcare applications will require overcoming new challenges in engineering, machine learning, computer vision, and biomedical research. This paper examines the potential uses of smart mirrors in healthcare and explores how this technology might bene?t users in various medical environments. We also provide a brief description of the state-of-the-art, including a functional prototype concept developed by our group, and highlight the directions to make this device more mainstream in health-related applications.

An Advocacy for the Use of 3D Stem Cell Culture Systems for the Development of Regenerative Medicine: An Emphasis on Photoreceptor Generation
摘要: The availability of stem cells is of great promise to study early developmental stages and to generate adequate cells for cell transfer therapies. Although many researchers using stem cells were successful in dissecting intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms and in generating specific cell phenotypes, few of the stem cells or the differentiated cells show the capacity to repair a tissue. Advances in cell and stem cell cultivation during the last years made tremendous progress in the generation of bona fide differentiated cells able to integrate into a tissue after transplantation, opening new perspectives for developmental biology studies and for regenerative medicine. In this review, we focus on the main works attempting to create in vitro conditions mimicking the natural environment of CNS structures such as the neural tube and its development in different brain region areas including the optic cup. The use of protocols growing cells in 3D organoids is a key strategy to produce cells resembling endogenous ones. An emphasis on the generation of retina tissue and photoreceptor cells is provided to highlight the promising developments in this field. Other examples are presented and discussed, such as the formation of cortical tissue, the epithelial gut or the kidney organoids. The generation of differentiated tissues and well-defined cell phenotypes from embryonic stem (ES) cells or induced pluripotent cells (iPSCs) opens several new strategies in the field of biology and regenerative medicine. A 3D organ/tissue development in vitro derived from human cells brings a unique tool to study human cell biology and pathophysiology of an organ or a specific cell population. The perspective of tissue repair is discussed as well as the necessity of cell banking to accelerate the progress of this promising field.
