  • Self‐Regulating Capabilities in Photonic Robotics

    摘要: Traditional robots are machines programmed to accomplish tasks, thanks to a complex ensemble of sensors connected to a computer “brain” which elaborate signals to drive specific actions. This complex network suffers from limitations—the need for a central computer, for instance, poses a limit to device miniaturization and requires a large amount of energy. A promising development, made possible by recent advances in material science, endeavors a new generation of soft robots that are multifunctional, compliant, and autonomous in ways that are similar to biological organisms. In particular, photoresponsive polymers are demonstrated to be valid candidates to substitute the computer-based intelligence with an “intrinsic” material cleverness. First demonstrations of self-sustained motions as oscillations or autonomous walking are described. In these cases, light also provides a solution to a second, very important, issue in microrobotics, which is the availability of a source of energy. Light actuation together with smart polymers can be combined into self-controlled robots capable of simple decision-making processes, for example with robotic grippers that are able to distinguish particles with different colors. In addition, the most recent examples about the integration of a form of robotic “intelligence” into a single material with a minimal level of consciousness are reported.

  • Structure of a Graphene-Modified Electroactive Polymer for Membranes of Biomimetic Systems: Simulation and Experiment

    摘要: A model is proposed that describes the structure of water filled Nafion-graphene composite forming the body of an electroactive polymer membrane for actuators of biomimetic systems able to work in air and a liquid medium. The model predicts the growth of the ionic conductivity with increasing concentration of a graphene modifier, which is due to that the size of a part of clusters of the Nafion framework containing hydrophobic graphene flakes enlarges together with the pore size. Then the optimal concentration of the graphene modifier is reached, which provides the maximum ionic conductivity and actuation ability of the membrane as well as its elastic properties. The possibility of introducing into Nafion the modifier amount needed to improve the actuator operation is experimentally tested.

  • Desenvolvimento de filmes poliméricos ultrafinos e reticulados para aplica??es em sensores

    摘要: A new method for producing stable films used in sensors is proposed, based on the layer-by-layer deposition of poly(o-ethoxyaniline) and phenol-formaldehyde (POEA/PF) followed by a thermal treatment to promote film crosslinking. The crosslinking process was characterized by Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopic analyses, atomic force microscopy and desorption studies. Sensor analyses were also carried out in order to evaluate cross-linked sensor signal. Results showed that PF resin served as a curing agent, forming a semi-interpenetrating polymer network therefore producing stable films. Although there was a decrease in the sensitivity of sensors with crosslinking, such films are quite stable and can be potentially used in sensors, especially where higher stability is required.
