  • Modified Doherty combiner with adjustable phase deviation

    摘要: In this paper, we propose a newly enhanced Doherty combiner by adding a 180° transmission line to the stage of the peaking amplifier of a typical Doherty combiner such that the designer can easily construct a combiner having a phase deviation to be turned on within the intended bandwidth. Given such characteristics, the proposed structure provides wider phase bandwidth and better performance with respect to power combining rate than the conventional structure does. We introduce formulas for the design variables of the added transmission line and also demonstrate its validity through circuit design and experiment.

  • Impact of Backup Power in Optimizing Deployment Cost of Hybrid Optical Wireless Broadband Access Network (HOWBAN) with Survivability

    摘要: The dependence on broadband to enhance the economy and environment sustainability is imposing immense urgency to provide ubiquitous wireless broadband access which is a key enabler to a greater spread of society. One of the key barriers to the network connectivity and survivability identified is the lack of or unreliable infrastructure. In our previous studies we have identified that the most unreliable component in a hybrid optical wireless broadband access network infrastructure is the power grid in remote areas and least developed countries. In this paper we extend our studies to evaluate the effect of the costs of backup power on sustaining survivability at the front end of two types of network configurations in a hybrid optical wireless broadband access network. The configurations investigated are full survivability and alternative path survivability networks. Our results show that the provision of backup power to all the nodes in a network configuration with one alternative path is able to reduce the cost of deployment compared to that of a full survivability network configuration without significantly affecting the network survivability.

  • A flat-field soft X-ray spectrometer for X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurement of warm dense matter

    摘要: A flat-field soft X-ray spectrograph operating in the spectral range of 250–1240 eV was designed and built for warm dense matter and high-energy density plasma physics. It employs a grazing incidence toroidal mirror as a focusing optic, an aberration-corrected variable line spacing concave grating with 2400 lines/mm as a dispersive element, and a charge coupled device as an X-ray detector. The dispersion and energy resolution are calibrated with a high-power laser-produced plasma and X-ray free electron laser sources. A resolving power over 370 was achieved over the entire spectral range. A super broadband spectrum in the range of 250–1000 eV was measured from the laser-produced bismuth plasma. The signal-to-noise of 130 was obtained with an average of 10 pulses. These results demonstrate the capability of the spectrograph for single laser shot based experiments for warm dense matter and high energy density plasma research.

  • A compact leaky-wave antenna using a planar spoof surface plasmon polariton structure

    摘要: This article presents and validates a leaky-wave antenna by using the spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) technique. By properly designing the proposed SSPP unit, the SSPP wave can be switched between the confinement and radiation modes. A large radiation efficiency can be achieved by properly designing the modulation depth, which ensures that a compact SSPP leaky-wave array can be realized by using a small number of SSPP radiation units. To verify the design, a prototype which consists of a SSPP feeding network and a 4 by 4 SSPP radiation units has been fabricated by using a low cost FR-4 substrate. A good agreement between simulated and measured results has been obtained. The proposed array antenna shows the promising capability of the SSPP technique for leaky-wave antenna applications.

  • Organic Field-Effect Transistor Based Ultrafast, Flexible, Physiological Temperature Sensors with Hexagonal Barium Titanate Nanocrystals in Amorphous Matrix as Sensing Material.

    摘要: Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) with hexagonal barium titanate nanocrystals in amorphous matrix (h-BTNC) as one of the bilayer dielectric system have been fabricated on a highly flexible 10 μm thick polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates. The device current and mobility remains same upto a bending radius of 4mm that make it suitable for wearable e-skin applications. h-BTNC films found to be highly temperature sensitive and the OFETs designed based on this material showed ultra-precession (~4.3 mK), low power (~ 1μW at 1.2 V operating voltage), ultrafast response (~24 ms) in sensing temperature over a range from 20 °C to 45 °C continuously. The sensors are highly stable around body temperature and work at various extreme conditions, such as under water, solutions of different pH as well as of various salt concentrations. These properties make this sensor very unique and highly suitable for various healthcare and other applications, where in a small variation of temperature around this temperature range is required to be measured at an ultra-fast speed.

  • Behavior of Al/Cu/Ti electrodes in surface acoustic wave filter at high power

    摘要: Driven by the need for high data-rates and continuous reduction in device size, surface acoustic wave filters are required to work under increasingly high power. In this work, a series of 2.7 GHz surface acoustic wave filters with Al/Cu/Ti three-layered electrode were fabricated and loaded with high power. Those three-layered electrodes showed weaker texture but higher stability than Al-Cu alloy electrode at high power. Morphologies, microstructures and elements distribution in cross section of fingers were analyzed carefully before and after high power loading. Results show that the circular-arc-shaped outline of fingers were appeared in most samples after high power loading, and the number of gains in the finger cross section changed from some into several with much larger volume. The features of distribution of Cu atoms also coincided with these microstructures. By finite element method and phase diagram analysis, the higher stability of Al/Cu/Ti three-layered electrodes are attributed to precipitation of θ-CuAl2 in the bottom edge of electrode finger and Cu-doped α-Al in the center top.

  • Performance of a modified solar chimney power plant for power generation and vegetation

    摘要: This paper develops a mathematical model to investigate the performance of a modified solar chimney power plant (MSCPP) for purposes of both power generation and vegetation. It then estimates the net added benefit. Results show that with the vegetation area enlarging, the MFR of the vapor increases, and more heat is used as the latent heat for water evaporation, leading to considerable reduction of the power. Condensation from the saturated air occurs only for very large vegetation area. On a cooler day, the plant produces less power and the condensation occurs for smaller vegetation area. Higher relative humidity of ambient air results in clear reduction of the MFR of the vapor evaporating from the vegetation area, and accordingly the great enhancement of the power. The benefit from agricultural products is larger than the benefit loss caused by the electricity loss, and the benefit of fresh water condensed from the saturated air is negligible. This leads to net added benefit for the MSCPP compared to the conventional plant. The net added benefit becomes greater with larger vegetation area. When the chimney is heightened from 1000 m to 1500 m, the power is enhanced greatly; however, the net added benefit becomes smaller.

  • Design and development of a novel level transmitter utilizing lithium niobate (LiNbO3) Mach-Zehnder modulator for hazardous regions

    摘要: In the proposed work, a very low-cost transducer and a novel photonic based transmission technique have developed for liquid level measurement. Two copper parallel plates are used to measure the liquid level in the sensing tube. For transmission of the measured quantity to the remote location, electrical (1–5 V DC), as well as optical technique, has been used. A lithium niobate (LiNbO3) based Mach Zehnder interferometer has been used for the optical transmission. In the proposed method 40GHz, Photline made MXAN-LN-40 light intensity Mach-Zehnder modulator was used. The optical output was analyzed with the help of optical spectrum analyzer (MS9710B) as well as optical meter. Optical transmission was not affected by EMI interference and very advantageous in the inflammable regions. With the help of the proposed method, the sensitivity of 7.02 pF/cm. from the sensor and ?0.236 dBm/cm. from the modulator were achieved. The output of the sensor, signal conditioning, and optically transmitted data has been analyzed experimentally.

  • A Novel Modified Sine-Cosine Optimized MPPT Algorithm for Grid Integrated PV System under Real Operating Conditions

    摘要: This research work presents a modified sine-cosine optimized Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm for grid integration. Developed algorithm provides a maximum power (PV) panel and simplified extraction implementation with benefit high convergence velocity. Moreover, the performance and ability of Modified Sine-Cosine Optimized (MSCO) algorithm equated with recent Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithms for comparative observation. Practical responses analyzed under steady state, dynamic and partial shading conditions by using dSPACE real controlling board laboratory scale hardware implementation. The MSCO based MPPT algorithm always shown the fast convergence rate, easy implementation, less computational burden and accurate to track the optimal PV power under varying weather conditions. Experimental results provided in the article clearly shown the validation of the proposed algorithm.

    摘要: Human-derived brain organoids were proposed for the generation of functional in vitro models and human brain tissues for drug-discovery, precision medicine and cell-based clinical therapies. However, their generation is currently subjected to a high variability which limits their routine exploitation. To achieve a quality-controlled production of brain organoids and to provide readout capabilities for assays development, we propose to realize active micro-scale devices that can be embedded into living 3D cell assemblies to provide in-tissue wireless sensing and monitoring of biosignals. Here, we evaluate a low-power solution that integrates into a 100μm×100μm area all circuits required for sensing and amplification of bioelectrical signals while providing RF wireless power delivery and data transmission. Circuit simulations on a 130nm RF-CMOS node demonstrate the feasibility of such solution with a 6.18μW of power consumption. Preliminary in vitro experiments with dummy Si micro-devices demonstrate their integration into 3D cell aggregates during cell culture.
