  • Pressure dependence of high order harmonic generation in nitrogen molecular gas and atmospheric air

    摘要: The effect of the variation of the gas pressure on the high harmonic generation (HHG) from nitrogen molecular gas (N2) and atmospheric air with ultrashort intense laser pulses is measured. The optimum pressure in the interaction region of a gas jet for maximizing the HHG yield is determined for both gases. Enhancement of the HHG output and its extension to higher harmonic orders are observed around the optimum pressure value of 0.33 bar. Theoretical calculations based on one-dimensional models explain this effect and provide reasonable agreement with experimental results.

  • Weak-value amplification of photon-number operators in the optomechanical interaction

    摘要: An experimental proposal is presented in which dark port postselection together with weak measurements are used to enlarge the radiation pressure effect of a single photon on a mechanical oscillator placed in the middle of a Fabry-Pérot cavity and initialized in the ground state. By preparing and postselecting the photon (the system) in two quasiorthogonal states, the weak value of the radiation force operator can lie outside the eigenvalue spectrum, producing a large shift on the wave function of the mechanical oscillator (the measuring device) in the position representation. Consequently, the effect of a single photon on the average position of the oscillator can be amplified as compared to the effect caused by a photon without postselection, i.e., only preselected. The strong measurement scenario is also analyzed. In this case, a higher amplification effect is achieved and the mean position of the oscillator can reach the level of the zero-point fluctuations, but the postselection probabilities are smaller. Finally, the situation in which the oscillator starts in a thermal equilibrium state is studied. In this case, the amplification of the average position remains the same, i.e., proportional to the weak value, but the signal-to-noise ratio is reduced by a factor that depends on the average number of thermal phonons.

  • Photophoretic force measurement on microparticles in binary complex plasmas

    摘要: This article presents a method to measure the photophoretic force on microparticles in complex plasmas. A laser heating setup is used to increase the kinetic temperatures of binary mixtures composed of melamine-formaldehyde (MF) and silica (SiO2) particles. The temperature gain of both particle species due to the additional thermal reservoir is compared to a laser force model. Contributions of radiation pressure and photophoretic forces are determined through a variation of neutral gas pressure and application of Lorenz-Mie theory. The photophoretic force is found to be significant for MF particles at typical conditions in complex plasma experiments.

  • Low-divergence relativistic proton jet from a thin solid target driven by an ultra-intense circularly polarized Laguerrea??Gaussian laser pulse

    摘要: We propose a new ion acceleration scheme of irradiating a thin solid target with an ultra-intense circularly polarized Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) laser pulse. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are performed to demonstrate that this scheme can generate a low-divergence high-density relativistic proton jet. By this scheme, the number of protons emitted with a small angle (<1°) from the laser axis can be more than tens of times as high as that of the protons accelerated by a circularly polarized Gaussian pulse. The inward ponderomotive force of the LG pulse drives such a proton beam along the laser axis.

  • Characteristics of ion beams generated in the interaction of ultra-short laser pulses with ultra-thin foils

    摘要: Experiments investigating ion acceleration from laser-irradiated ultra-thin foils on the GEMINI laser facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory indicate a transition to ‘Light Sail’ Radiation Pressure Acceleration when using circularly polarized, high contrast laser pulses. This paper complements previously published results with additional data and modelling which provide information on the multispecies dynamics taking place during the acceleration, and provides an indication on expected scaling of these processes at higher laser intensities.

  • Investigation of Light-sail and Hole-boring Radiation Pressure Accelerations upon the Interaction of Ultra-intense Laser Pulses with Thin Targets

    摘要: The radiation pressure acceleration (RPA) scheme with a circularly polarized laser pulse is well-known to provide an efficient generation of intense, energetic quasi-monochromatic ion beams. Depending on the thickness of targets, the RPA appears in two distinct modes: the light-sail (LS) RPA, which develops in ultrathin targets, and the hole-boring (HB) RPA, which develops in relatively thick targets. In this work, we investigated the ion acceleration dynamics of the LS-RPA and the HB-RPA through a fully relativistic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. The transition and competition between LS- and HB-RPA modes are investigated with suitable explanations of a one-dimensional (1D) theoretical model. To check the validity of the 1D results and investigate the multi-dimensional effects, two-dimensional simulations are also carried out. The present work may provide a deeper understanding of RPA and useful guidelines for generating high-quality and high-fluence ion beams.

    摘要: In this work we perform measurements of the radiation pressure of a radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic field which will lead to a new SI traceable power calibration. There are several groups around the world investigating methods to perform more direct SI traceable measurement of RF power (where RF is defined to range from 100s of MHz to THz). A measurement of radiation pressure offers the possibility for a measure traceable to the kilogram and to Planck’s constant through the redefined SI. Towards this goal, we demonstrate the ability to measure the radiation pressure/force carried in a field at 15 GHz.

In this work, by using a new force balance system being developed at NMIJ, which can be calibrated by SI traceable standard, the radiation pressure force of optical laser was determined and compared to a load obtained by small mass standards.

  • The Adjusted Optical Properties for Galileo/BeiDou-2/QZS-1 Satellites and Initial Results on BeiDou-3e and QZS-2 satellites

    摘要: Solar Radiation Pressure (SRP) is the dominant non-gravitational perturbation for GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) satellites. In the absence of precise surface models, the Empirical CODE Orbit Models (ECOM, ECOM2) are widely used in GNSS satellite orbit determination. Based on previous studies, the use of an a priori box-wing model enhances the ECOM model, especially if the spacecraft is a stretched body satellite. However, so far not all the GNSS system providers have published their metadata. To ensure a precise use of the a priori box-wing model, we estimate the optical parameters of all the Galileo, BeiDou-2, and QZS-1 (Quasi Zenith Satellite System) satellites based on the physical processes from SRP to acceleration. Validation using orbit prediction proves that the adjusted parameters of Galileo and QZS-1 satellites exhibit almost the same performance as the corresponding published and ”best guess” values. Whereas, the estimated parameters of BeiDou-2 satellites demonstrate an improvement of more than 60% over the initial ”guess” values. The resulting optical parameters of all the satellites are introduced into an a priori box-wing model, which is jointly used with ECOM and ECOM2 model in the orbit determination. Results show that the pure ECOM2 model exhibits better performance than the pure ECOM model for Galileo, BeiDou-2 GEO and QZS-1 orbits. Combined with the a priori box-wing model the ECOM model (ECOM+BW) results in the best Galileo, BeiDou-2 GEO and QZS-1 orbits. The standard deviation (STD) of satellite laser ranging residuals reduce by about 20% and 5% with respect to the pure ECOM2 model for Galileo and BeiDou-2 GEO orbits, while the reductions are about 40% and 60% for QZS-1 orbits in yaw-steering and orbit-normal mode respectively. BeiDou-2 IGSO and MEO satellite orbits do not bene?t much from the a priori box-wing model. In summary, we suggest setting up a uni?ed SRP model of ECOM+BW for Galileo, QZS-1, and BeiDou-2 orbits based on the adjusted metadata. In addition, we estimate the optical parameters of BeiDou-3e and QZS-2 satellites using a limited number of tracking stations. Results regarding the uni?ed SRP model indicate the same advantages, the STD of satellite laser ranging residuals reduces by about 30% and 20% for QZS-2 and BeiDou-3e orbits respectively over orbit products without a priori model. The estimation procedure is e?ective and easy to apply to the new emerging satellites in the future.

  • Reynolds number and diffusion coefficient of micro- and nano-aerosols in optical pipelines

    摘要: In this study, the microscopic particle motion inside an optical pipeline, such as particle motion through a mechanical tube, is investigated. The photons in an optical tube guide the particles towards the center of the light beam by inducing photophoretic and radiation pressure forces. Laguerre–Gaussian- and Bessel-like beams are examples of such optical tubes. The Reynolds number of particle motion in optical tubes is investigated. The power of the light beam and the ratio of the particle radius to the light beam ring radius influence the turbulence of the particle flow and the value of the Reynolds number. The diffusion coefficient of particle movement in such pipelines is derived, which indicates that an optical tube is a good tool for guiding and trapping particles in micron- and nanometer-scale dimensions.
