  • Mm-Wave Beam-Steering Focal Plane Arrays with Microfluidically Switched Feed Networks

    摘要: Micro?uidically switched feed networks are introduced to realize millimeter-wave beam-steering focal plane arrays (FPAs). Switching functionality is achieved by a selectively metallized plate (SMP) repositionable within a micro?uidic channel that is brought in close proximity to the microstrip line feed network of an FPA. The feed network is strategically designed to exhibit gap discontinuities that are sequentially overlapped by the SMP metallizations. The capacitive couplings between the SMP metallizations and the gap discontinuities are designed to achieve wideband (~20 GHz) switching functionality with low insertion loss (IL < 0.2 dB). Transmission line theory is utilized to demonstrate that the feed network offers 38% fractional bandwidth with ≤7 dB IL for linear arrays of 32 elements. This performance constitutes a signi?cant improvement over the recently reported resonant feed network based realization of micro?uidic beam-steering FPAs (MFPAs). Experimental veri?cation is carried out through the design and fabrication of a 30 GHz eight-element FPA. The FPA exhibits measured gains ranging between 20.2 and 22.6 dBi. Loss budget breakdown con?rms the low-loss performance of the micro?uidically switched feed networks (≤3 dB). The required micro?uidic actuation range is 4.2 mm and 10× lower than that of the prior work. This allows to achieve a faster beam-steering speed (0.27 s versus 5.25 s of previous designs). An integrated sensing approach for detecting the SMP position is also presented for the ?rst time to facilitate the use of presented MFPAs with closed-loop position control.

  • Pattern Reconfigurable High Gain Spherical Dielectric Resonator Antenna Operating on Higher-Order Mode

    摘要: This paper proposes a pattern recon?gurable high gain spherical dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) operating on higher-order mode. Two microstrip patches were used to excite T E301 mode in the different direction. A recon?gurable switch network was designed and it has three switching modes for selecting each patch alone or selecting them simultaneously. The proposed antenna can recon?gure its radiation pattern by using a feeding structure which is consist of two microstrip patches and the recon?gurable switch network. A prototype antenna operating on T E301 mode at 5.8GHz was fabricated by ceramic material. By experiment, we validated the new concept of pattern recon?gurable spherical DRA.

  • A new chaotic teaching learning based optimization for frequency reconfigurable antennas design

    摘要: In this paper, a new chaotic teaching learning based optimization (CTLBO) is proposed. TLBO is a rather newly proposed population-based algorithm. This algorithm has no control parameters for the tuning and has a simple structure. We improve its performance by chaotic maps. First, the presented CTLBO is tested on nine unimodal/multimodal benchmark functions. Then, chaotic sequences are applied as vectors with different initial values for design of a frequency recon?gurable antenna (FRA) as a practical example. Comparisons of the performance of this algorithm with those of the basic TLBO, genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization show the ability of this algorithm in design of FRAs in terms of faster convergence and better performance. A prototype of the optimized antenna with CTLBO algorithm is fabricated and the simulation and measurement results agree suitably.

Measured results of the polarization-agile antenna are shown in detail, which verify its performance.

    摘要: A small-size recon?gurable loop antenna for mobile phone applications with a compact volume of 55 × 5 × 3 mm3 is proposed. In addition to the traditional three loop antenna modes, namely, 0.5-λ, 1-λ, and 1.5-λ modes, the proposed loop antenna also generates another 2-λ mode. To cover more operating bands with such compact antenna volume, the recon?gurable technique is therefore applied by inserting an RF switch at the end of the proposed antenna to improve bandwidth at the low band. By combining the four working states of RF switch, the proposed antenna can cover GSM850/900, DCS1800, PCS1900, UMTS2100, and LTE2300/2500 bands with low speci?c absorption rate and high ef?ciencies.

  • Nano-scale multifunctional logic gate based on graphene/hexagonal boron nitride plasmonic waveguides

    摘要: A new probe-fed patch antenna with polarization recon?guration is presented in this paper. The antenna is composed of a circular radiating patch and a switchable feed network. By controlling the operating states of four pairs of PIN diodes in the feed network, the feed point of the circular patch can be switched. Therefore, a recon?guration between four linear polarization directions at a 45? interval (22.5?, 67.5?, 112.5?, and 157.5?) can be realized. All the different polarization states own similar matching and radiation characteristics. Simulated and measured results indicate that the antenna can achieve recon?gurable quadri-polarization diversity features with an invariable operating frequency and excellent radiation performance, which are very attractive for wireless communications. In addition, the proposed design can offer more recon?gurable linear polarization directions by adding more switchable paths in the feed network.

    摘要: This paper presents a recon?gurable aperture-fed patch antenna array for ±45? polarizations. First, a new method to realize the recon?gurable ±45? polarizations is proposed. It introduces controllable RF switches on a cross-aperture to excite a square patch for two orthogonal polarizations. The RF switches are controlled by two sets of DC biases, which could select the polarization through the recon?gurable aperture. Second, two patch antennas based on cross-aperture excitation are discussed. The ?rst structure uses a split ground plane with four switches, while the other one employs a united ground plane with eight switches. Both antennas operate well as the single element. However, only the antenna with a united ground is suitable for developing a recon?gurable dual-polarized antenna array, owning to its simple DC biasing lines and the recon?gurable-controlling network. Both simulation and experiment studies were examined to verify the proposed design. The measured 10-dB impedance bandwidth of the array is 9.3%, which can cover the 2.4-GHz WLAN band. The desired radiation patterns were observed with a maximum gain of 13.5 dBi. The proposed antenna array has low cross-polarization and stable gain across the entire operating bandwidth.
