    摘要: Terahertz (THz) radiation, which is sandwiched between the infrared and microwave in the electromagnetic spectrum, has become more and more attractive due to its special properties. Compared with the quick development of THz sources and detectors, THz functional devices are lagging behind, especially the devices for wave front modulation. Metasurface, a kind of artificial materials, is enable effective manipulation of the amplitude, phase and polarization state of electromagnetic waves with subwavelength spatial resolution. It has been used for ultrathin planar lenses, complex light field generation, spin orbital angular momentum coupling, and metasurface holograms. However, the function of this kind of metasurface based devices are fixed once they are fabricated, the spatial THz modulation which can dynamically modulate the wave front of THz radiation is demand in high resolution THz imaging and THz communication. In this presentation, we present a novel approach for generating arbitrary wave fronts of a THz beam by dynamically creating metasurface structures through illuminating a super thin silicon wafer with femtosecond laser, which is spatially modulated to result in an array of reconfigurable subwavelength resonators. The wave front of the THz beam is then determined by forming spatial profiles of the Pancharatnam-Berry scattering phase by dynamically controlling the resonator orientation. Proof-of-concept experiments demonstrate that streaming holographic images and lenses of variable focal length can be realized in real time. The theoretical expectations and experimental results are shown in Fig. 1, the generated patterns are matching with the theoretical exceptions. The reconfigurable scheme demonstrated here is convenient and fast, and may lead to advances in a host of THz applications.

  • Hysteretic behavior in ion gel-graphene hybrid terahertz modulator

    摘要: A polarization-reconfigurable and frequency-tunable mechanism based on an active artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) structure is proposed. The active AMC unit cell consists of a four-corner-cut inner patch and four triangles loaded with four varactors, and it can realize polarization-reconfigurable and frequency-tunable reflection characteristics by adjusting the capacitance of the varactors. By employing it as a ground plane of a pair of linearly-polarized dipole antennas, a multi-functional antenna can be well designed with polarization reconfigurability and frequency-tuning capability. By controlling the DC bias of the varactors accordingly, the three polarization states of right-/left-handed circular polarization (R/LHCP) and linear polarization (LP) can be switched, respectively, while the operating frequency of each polarization can be flexibly tuned. The measured tuning frequency ratio for the LP state (|S11| < ?10dB) can reach 1.56:1, while the ratio for either the LHCP or RHCP state (axial ratio< 3dB) is about 1.28:1. Moreover, a large bandwidth for each polarization state can be obtained, where the bandwidths are up to 17.1% and 8.7%, respectively, for the LP and CP states. Besides, it is more flexible for the CP states since the bandwidth can be adjusted. For a demonstration, one prototype of the proposed antenna is fabricated and measured. The agreement between the theoretical and measured results indicates good performances of the proposed antenna.

  • Programmable Integrated Silicon Photonics Waveguide Meshes: Optimized designs and control algorithms

    摘要: Programmable Integrated Photonics is a recent area of research that aims to integrate a very-large scale of reconfigurable photonic components to enable flexible and versatile photonic integrated circuits. In this paper we review the state of the art of general-purpose waveguide mesh arrangements with a special focus on those that allow the synthesis of optical feedback loops. Moreover, we propose for the first time, a new design approach to generate waveguide mesh patterns with equally-oriented components. This innovation is of special relevance to improve performance and to mitigate one of the main scalability limitations, the integration density. The paper finalizes with an introduction to control algorithms for waveguide mesh arrangements based on derivative methods and non-derivative methods. These control methods provide a proof for the self-reconfiguration of large-scale waveguide mesh arrangements. In particular, we apply the computational optimization algorithms to program a hexagonal waveguide mesh to emulate a 1x8 beamforming network and an optical filter based on an unbalanced MZI design. All in all, the paper comprises recipes to achieve truly practical software-defined photonic integrated circuits.

    摘要: In this paper, we introduce a novel reconfigurable antenna for implementation in 5G wireless systems. The proposed antenna is a leaky-wave antenna based on the half-mode substrate integrated waveguide. By introducing sets of switches over the top conductor plane, the antenna scans the space electronically. In the proposed antenna, beam steering is due to disturbances in the surface current under the influence of changing the bias voltage of the switches. This antenna design is to be implemented in 5G wireless communication systems. Hence, the center frequency is chosen as 28.5 GHz. The length, width, and height of the antenna are 68mm, 25mm, and 0.3mm, respectively. The compactness and configurability of the antenna makes it a suitable candidate for 5G wireless systems.

  • Defected waveguide structure designs and characteristics

    摘要: This article presented defected waveguide structure (DWS) designs and characteristics with microstrip-fed circular monopole antenna for ultrawideband applications. Typically, waveguide is often designed and employed as antenna and filter application in its rigid dimension. The reconfigurable design toward the waveguide in terms of structural alteration with DWS was found less concerned among researchers although defected ground structure and defected microstrip structure have been applied widely. The motivation of this article was to propose the different DWS designs and characteristics in terms of the S-parameters result. DWS in basic square geometry with different configurations of straight lines were introduced and compared with FR4 substrate waveguide. Simulated S-parameters results were modeled in terms of equivalent circuit and measured for validation. For practical measurement, waveguide ports at both open-ended surface of waveguide were replaced by the monopole antenna. For the modeled S-parameters results, the square DWS design and square DWS with horizontal straight lines showed quite similar characteristics with higher S11 and lower S21 above frequency 9 GHz. Whereas square DWS with vertical straight lines and square DWS with both horizontal vertical straight lines showed higher S11 and lower S21 below frequency 3.5 GHz. Square DWS with vertical straight lines achieved the lowest S21 around ?70 dB below 3.5 GHz and lower S21 around ?50 dB at frequency 10.3 GHz. Thus, DWS is proposed for the future smart antenna technology as it can be further modified to meet the different requirements without changing the antenna configuration.

  • Design of a Frequency and Polarization Reconfigurable Patch Antenna With a Stable Gain

    摘要: This paper presents a frequency and polarization reconfigurable patch antenna with a small gain variation. Eight discrete operating frequency bands can be achieved by properly switching shorting pins, and three polarization states, i.e., left-hand circularly polarization (LHCP), right-hand circularly polarization (RHCP) and linearly polarization (LP), can be realized simultaneously by adjusting perturbation segments. A stable gain performance is obtained within a wide reconfigurable frequency range, as well as all the reconfigurable polarization states, by utilizing the loss-character of p-i-n diodes when shorting pins are properly switched ON/OFF for different states. A prototype is designed, fabricated and measured. The simulated and measured results agree well. The experimental results show that the proposed antenna exhibits a simple reconfigurable network, a wide switching frequency range, a good element gain, and a small gain variation less than 1.8 dB across all the operating states.

    摘要: A quasi-cross-shaped coupling slot antenna with a Wilkinson power divider network is proposed to realize the wideband linear polarization (CP), left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP). The quasi-cross-shaped coupling slot generates two orthogonal linear polarization with high isolation. Four pairs of PIN diodes are used in four branches of the Wilkinson power divider network to alter the current flow path so as to generate a phase difference of 0° or ±90° and achieve the polarization reconfiguration. The results show that the proposed antenna has a 10-dB impedance bandwidth of 2.80- 3.54GHz (0.74GHz, 23.3%) for LP and 2.82-3.49GHz (0.67GHz, 21.2%) for CP. The 3-dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth is 2.92- 3.43GHz (0.51GHz, 16.1%) for LHCP and 2.88-3.43GHz (0.55GHz, 17.4%) for RHCP. In addition, the antenna achieves a high average realized a gain of 9.1dBi.

    摘要: A low profile omnidirectional circular polarized reconfigurable antenna for Beidou application is proposed in this paper. This antenna is based on the first-order resonance mode of epsilon negative transmission line. To form a circularly polarized wave in the far field, the vertical and horizontal polarization is generated by a parallel circular cavity and three dual arc arms, respectively. Only 6 PIN diodes are needed to alter the left-handed circularly polarized (LHCP) or right- handed circularly polarized (RHCP) omnidirectional radiation state. Three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation software Ansoft HFSS and RF circuit simulation software Agilent ADS are used for co-simulation and optimization. It is shown that the proposed antenna can meet the Beidou navigation BDS-1 S band requirement well whether at the left or right circularly polarized state. The omnidirectional average axial ratio at two states are 1.24 dB and 1.25 dB with 16.7 % and 19.8 % 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth, respectively. The thickness of antenna is only 2 mm (0.016 (cid:540)0) and simply processed without a dual feeding structure and 90 phase shifter.

  • Unit-Cell loaded with PIN diodes for 1-bit Linearly Polarized Reconfigurable Transmitarrays

    摘要: In this letter, a reconfigurable unit-cell for transmitarray antenna working at X-band is presented. It is designed to provide 1-bit phase quantization using p-i-n diodes. The unit-cell is based on multi-layer frequency selective surfaces with the use of two substrates and a combination of a C-patch and a ring slot loaded by a rectangular gap. It is optimized using full-wave electromagnetic simulation and verified by using waveguide simulator. The experimental results show that the unit-cell provides two values of transmission phase with a step of 180° at 11.5 GHz. Furthermore, the unit-cell has a low thickness of 0.19λ0, and is low-cost and easy to fabricate.
