  • Modeling and Experimental Analysis on the Temperature Response of AlN-Film Based SAWRs

    摘要: The temperature responses of aluminum nitride (AlN) based surface acoustic wave resonator (SAWR) are modeled and tested. The modeling of the electrical performance is based on a modified equivalent circuit model introduced in this work. For SAWR consisting of piezoelectric film and semiconducting substrate, parasitic parameters from the substrate is taken into consideration for the modeling. By utilizing the modified model, the high temperature electrical performance of the AlN/Si and AlN/6H-SiC based SAWRs can be predicted, indicating that a substrate with a wider band gap will lead to a more stable high temperature behavior, which is further confirmed experimentally by high temperature testing from 300 K to 725 K with SAWRs having a wavelength of 12 μm. Temperature responses of SAWR’s center frequency are also calculated and tested, with experimental temperature coefficient factors (TCF) of center frequency being ′29 ppm/K and ′26 ppm/K for the AlN/Si and AlN/6H-SiC based SAWRs, which are close to the predicted values.

  • Compact Balanced Single-Band and Dual-Band BPFs with Controllable Bandwidth Using FoldedS-Shaped Slotline Resonators (FSSRs)

    摘要: In this paper, two compact balanced bandpass filters (BPFs) using half-wavelength folded S-shaped slotline resonators (FSSRs) are designed. The proposed FSSR is realized by extending and folding a traditional S-shaped slotline resonator, which can affect the internal coupling of resonator and reduce the size of the resonator. The balanced stepped-impedance microstrip-slotline transition structures are employed to generate a wideband common-mode (CM) suppression. The proposed filters can realize a single-band differential-mode (DM) bandpass response or a dual-band one by employing one or three FSSRs, respectively. Moreover, the center frequencies of the DM passbands are independent from the CM responses, which can simplify the designs procedure significantly. In order to validate their practicability, a compact balanced dual-band BPF with controllable center frequencies and bandwidths is fabricated and good agreement between the simulated and measured results is observed.

    摘要: We demonstrate a novel design of all-dielectric metasurfaces featuring strong axial toroidal response. A unit cell of the metamaterial is constructed by arranging two types of dielectric disks into an asymmetric quadrumer cluster. The toroidal response is achieved via the excitation of a trapped mode due to the symmetry breaking in the cluster. Dependence of the toroidal response on the degree of asymmetry in the cluster geometry, that appears from the different compositions of holes introduced into the disks, is studied both numerically and experimentally in the microwave regime.

    摘要: In this paper, a new approach to bandpass filter design, based on coupling coefficients calculation, introduced in [1], is experimentally verified. S-band (2.7 – 3.1 GHz bandwidth) microstrip bandpass filters of several four-resonator structures for pre-selectors of active phase array radar systems are designed, produced and measured. A conventional parallel-coupled filter is produced and measured for comparison. Measurement results confirm good performance of used approach.

  • Inkjet-Printed High- <i>Q</i> Nanocrystalline Diamond Resonators

    摘要: Diamond is a highly desirable material for state-of-the-art micro-electromechanical (MEMS) devices, radio-frequency filters and mass sensors, due to its extreme properties and robustness. However, the fabrication/integration of diamond structures into Si-based components remain costly and complex. In this work, a lithography-free, low-cost method is introduced to fabricate diamond-based micro-resonators: a modified home/office desktop inkjet printer is used to locally deposit nanodiamond ink as ?50–60 μm spots, which are grown into ≈1 μm thick nanocrystalline diamond film disks by chemical vapor deposition, and suspended by reactive ion etching. The frequency response of the fabricated structures is analyzed by laser interferometry, showing resonance frequencies in the range of ≈9–30 MHz, with Q-factors exceeding 104, and (f0 × Q) figure of merit up to ≈2.5 × 1011 Hz in vacuum. Analysis in controlled atmospheres shows a clear dependence of the Q-factors on gas pressure up until 1 atm, with Q ∝ 1/P. When applied as mass sensors, the inkjet-printed diamond resonators yield mass responsivities up to 981 Hz fg?1 after Au deposition, and ultrahigh mass resolution up to 278 ± 48 zg, thus outperforming many similar devices produced by traditional top-down, lithography-based techniques. In summary, this work demonstrates the fabrication of functional high-performance diamond-based micro-sensors by direct inkjet printing.

  • Quadrature squeezing of the mechanical mode in a superconducting electromechanical system

    摘要: We propose a scheme for realizing quadrature squeezing of the mechanical mode in a superconducting electromechanical system, where a nanomechanical resonator (NAMR) is coupled to a superconducting transmission line resonator (STLR) via a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), and the SQUID acts as a qubit. Under a large detuning condition, we use the Fr?hlich-Nakajima transformation to adiabatically eliminate the qubit and obtain an effective Hamiltonian for the STLR and the NAMR. Our results show that a strong squeezing effect (beyond 3 dB limit) can occur in the NAMR, and the squeezing degree can be optimized by controlling the strength of the driving field and the dissipation ratio of the system. One of the most notable features of our results is the universality, i.e. the results only depend on a few scaled quantities, not on too many parameters.

  • DESIGN OF NOVEL COMPACT TRI-BAND BANDPASS FILTER WITH CONTROLLABLE FREQUENCIES AND HIGH SELECTIVITY

    摘要: This paper presents a compact tri-band bandpass ?lter (BPF) with high selectivity. The proposed ?lter utilizes novel stub-loaded quarter-wavelength resonators and conventional uniform quarter-wavelength resonators. The latter is embedded in the former, and they are separated by a feed line. Due to these quarter-wavelength resonators, the total size is greatly reduced. Moreover, the passband frequencies can be controlled individually. To enhance its selectivity, source-load coupling is employed. For demonstration, an experimental ?lter is implemented. High skirt selectivity and suppression levels are observed in the measured results. The circuit area of the ?lter is 0.17λg × 0.19λg, featuring compact size.

  • Editorial for the Special Issue on Micro-Resonators: The Quest for Superior Performance

    摘要: Micro-resonators have reached a distinctive level of maturity due to the accumulated wealth of knowledge on their design, modeling, and manufacturing during the past few decades. Alongside this tremendous scientific progress, micro-resonators are now commonly found in most electronic systems. In this Special Issue, our attempt was to look deeper into less-common topics in this field, such as the nonlinear operation of micro-resonators that are envisioned to play a more important role with the evolution of this technological area.

  • Second Harmonic Light Manipulation with Vertical Split Ring Resonators

    摘要: The second harmonic generation (SHG) of vertical and planar split-ring resonators (SRRs) that are broken centro-symmetry configurations at the interface of metal surface and air is investigated. Strong interactions, better electromagnetic field confinements, and less leakage into the substrate for vertical SRRs are found. Experimental results show a 2.6-fold enhancement of SHG nonlinearity, which is in good agreement with simulations and calculations. Demonstrations of 3D metastructures and vertical SRRs with strong SHG nonlinearity majorly result from magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole clearly provides potential applications for photonics and sensing.
